year to low-income and minority students.

Raising Financial Aid Awareness

Paying for College Initiative

The Sallie Mae Fund created this multifaceted approach to educate high school students and their
parents about planning and paying for college. The initiative has four parts:

I Paying for College National Bus Tour

Research has shown that Latino families tend to prefer to learn about financial aid
from in-person meetings or workshops. By taking our Paying for College workshop
series directly to these families in more than 50 cities nationwide each year, The Sallie
Mae Fund reaches families who may not otherwise hear this important information 3
about how to plan and pay for college.

I Paying for College Workshop Series

This free workshop visits local communities nationwide to educate low-income and
minority students and their families about the value and affordability of college. The
Sallie Mae Fund conducts more than 70 workshops a year in English and Spanish.

I “Design Your Own Workshop” Toolkit

The high demand for our popular Paying for College workshops led The Fund to create
a do-it-yourself Paying for College workshop toolkit, available for free on our Web site.

I Free Educational Resources

The Sallie Mae Fund offers a variety of educational resources, in English and Spanish,
on preparing and paying for college. These are available for free on our Web site to
students, parents, financial aid advisors, college admission counselors, high school
guidance counselors and community-based organizations.

Preparing for Academic Excellence

There is a direct connection between academic preparation and achieving the dream of higher education.
Poor academic achievement is one of the major barriers to college access. To help break down that
barrier, The Sallie Mae Fund provides significant support to organizations that make it their mission
to demonstrate the relevance and possibility of college. “ Financing and real estate expertise are critical

“Hold Fast to Dreams” Tour
The 2006 Walt Disney Pictures movie “Invincible” tells the true story of

Vincent Papale (portrayed by Mark Wahlberg), who tried out for and made

the Philadelphia Eagles football team in 1976 at age 30 and was part of the

Eagles comeback that eventually led to the Super Bowl. Vince has been an

employee of Sallie Mae for eight years and has conducted more than 50

Paying for College workshops on behalf of The Sallie Mae Fund.

In honor of Vince, The Sallie Mae Fund set up a five-city tour for him to tell

his story and help motivate disadvantaged students at high schools in Los

Angeles, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia and

St. Louis. One senior at each high school

was presented with a Sallie Mae Fund

“Hold Fast to Dreams” $10,000 college

scholarship. Each school selected the

student based on high economic need,

college potential and personal traits

that demonstrated overcoming the odds.

“ Hold fast to dreams, for if

dreams die, life is a broken
winged bird that cannot fly.”
