The Right Honourable Edward Schreyer, former Governor-General of Canada, and his wife, Mrs. Lily Schreyer joined Mr. David Hughes, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Canada on a tour to build homes. The tour is sponsored in part by RBC Financial Group, The Home Depot, CGC Inc., and Philips Electronics Ltd. This is such a year of celebration, said David Hughes. The tour celebrates the 100th home built by Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg where the Schreyers and Hughes helped to construct the future home of Moses and Martha Shyllon as part of the Yvon Dumont build. In Regina, Saskatchewan, the group assisted in framing a single family bungalow and celebrated Habitat for Humanity

Reginas Tenth Anniversary. Work on a triplex followed in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The tour culminated on August 14th with a full day of work on site at 8745 Government Street, Burnaby, B.C., where the Schreyers and Hughes joined about thirty volunteers under the guidance of a group of professional contractors raising walls and moving the project a big step ahead towards completion. Richard White, MLA Coquitlam-Maillardville was on hand as well. On August 15th, Weyerhauser, a major sponsor of the project, hosted a post-build reception. This visit marks the 700th house to be built in Canada since Habitat for Humanity began in 1985.

Message from the Board of Directors

By Gloria Levi (from her comments at the AGM)
In May 2001, I decided that a Habitat ReStore would put Habitat on a more secure financial footing. Frankly, it was a hard sell. There was no money coming in. We had just completed our first 4 houses. People were feeling burnt out. The ReStore seemed like a pipe dream, but I promised that we would create a ReStore Committee to do the work with NO drain on the existing manpower and financial resources of Habitat. We formed a new committee with 6 women and one manan unusual man, who jokingly referred to us women as his ladies. He didnt exactly take over, but it took a while to get used to him. He would come to each meeting with printed paper, either an agenda, (his agenda), a report, some written policies or procedures, etc. saying, Its either my way or the highway. As we got to know him better, we realized that none of it was true by the way. He said we needed a temporary warehouse to house accumulated product for the opening and phoned me daily until it was secured. (cont.)

(message from page one)

He came to meetings saying he had acquired lumber, then paints, then bathtubs, hardware, lamps, etc. At one meeting, he said he had acquired approximately $50,000 in merchandise. We all congratulated him but it rolled right off his back. Then one day he took me to this illusory warehouse, and I saw such an accumulation of wares, I was astounded! The reality was amazing. The committee talked about

the steps that needed to be taken, but his man was the doer. So when we wondered what to do about a location and a 10,000 square foot warehouse, he had already been out scouting around with several different real estate agents. He looked at dozens of them. Then he brought me into the act. But he already knew what was needed and where to go. And of course, he found the ideal location with a warehouse in relatively good shape. Well, how do we go about setting it all up? Of course, this

man had the plan. He arranged the clean up and set up of the warehouse, the transfer of merchandise from the temporary warehouse to our present location (no small matter), the layout, even to the very signage of areas. Marketing? Out in front and leading the pack was this man. Orienting and training the store manager, and doing it mostly by examplewas this man. Product acquisition to the extent that we are overflowing with merchandisewas this man. He is a man for all seasons, Mr. ReStore, LYNNWOOD ROBB!.

Bike and Build

Participants of Bike & Build presented Habitat for Humanity of Greater Vancouver with a contribution of USD$250 of funds they had raised in honour of the First Baptist Church of Vancouver and the New Life Community Church of Burnaby. Both churches hosted the cyclists during their stay in Greater Vancouver. The marathoners spent one of the two nights next door to Habitats

Government Street site in Burnaby and were able to visit the site the next morning and still keep the schedule to complete their journey. The students cycled from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Vancouver, B.C., traveling between 30 120 miles a day. Along the way, participants helped out with Habitat builds and raised awareness of the affordable housing problems in the towns they visited. Each

member also secured a minimum of $3750 to supports student-built Habitat homes at Virginia Tech and Dartmouth. Bike & Build looks forward to contributing again in 2004. For more information on Bike & Build, visit their website at www.bikeandbuild.org.

Last year marked the 11th Annual Ismaili Walk for Charity, in which the Ismaili community partnered with Habitat for Humanity to give a hand-up, not a hand-out to those who need it most. Helping the less fortunate is a cornerstone of the beliefs closely held by the Ismaili Muslim community and Habitat for Humanity (Malik Z.

The 12th Annual Ismaili Walk

Talib, President Ismaili Council for British Columbia). The Walk raised $100,000 for Habitat for Humanity, thus Phase II of the current building project at 8745 Government Street in Burnaby was greatly supported by the generosity of all the donors to the 11th Annual

Ismaili Walk. This year, the 12th Annual Ismaili Walk will partner with another compassionate organization, the United Way. It would be wonderful to support this worthwhile event. The walk in Stanley Park will take place on Sunday, September 7th, 2003. For more information and to get involved, please visit their website at www.uwlm.ca/IsmailiWalk.html.

The USS Coronado Lends A Hand

Crewmembers from the USS Coronado, a command ship designed as an emergency transporter assigned to patrol the Pacific Ocean, lent a hand to the Habitat for Humanity building project when they anchored in Vancouver harbour in June. The sailors spent all day Saturday, June 14th, pouring concrete,

landscaping, making scaffolding, and doing other chores for Phase 2 of the low-income housing development. Kevin Higgins, of Memphis, Tennessee, has done community work where his ships have been. stationed in Thailand, Hong Kong, Bahrain, and Dubai. He says he is glad to give a days labour to communities in need whenever he can. Some of the sailors have volunteered on projects all over the world, including a Habitat for The ReStore, operated by Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver sells new and used building materials at discount prices and continues to grow in popularity with customers and donors alike. With donations coming from retailers, manufacturers, home owners and the movie industry, the Habitat Restore has amassed a huge selection of home building products and unique decorative items. Founded in 1985, Habitat for Humanity Canada has local offices in all ten provinces and has built over 500 houses for people in need of adequate housing. Almost entirely staffed by volunteers, there are now twentyfive ReStores across the country that offer an opportunity to purchase a wide variety of goods including paints, plumbing,

Re-Store Highlights
by Tom Riessner There have been many challenges for the Habitat ReStore in the nine months since opening last October, but so far finding donations to fill the shelves has been no problem.

hardware, lumber and electrical supplies. The ReStore gives homeowners and businesses a place to direct unwanted building supplies which could otherwise go into a landfill while helping to build affordable housing in their community. In Burnaby, the proceeds from the ReStore go to support Habitats house building program on Government Street where the second phase of four houses, of a total of twenty-seven units, are under construction this summer. Currently open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm, the ReStore is also looking for volunteers to help with customer service, receiving and ticketing items, cashiers and drivers for picking up donations. 2003 Vancouver Home and Interior Design Show

The Vancouver Home and Interior Design Show, formerly known as the BC Fall Home Show is taking place October 16 19th at BC Place Stadium. Visitors to the show will have access to great ideas and expertise on renovations and home design. Habitat for Humanity will be there in force with a booth organized by Jeffrey Monachello, providing a great

opportunity to show more people what Habitat is all about and to get them involved. A special thanks to DMG World Media for their continued support of Habitat in once again donating valued floor space to promote Habitat and the ReStore.
