BIDDLE DART Cable Analyzer

Specifically designed for performing maintenance on underground residential distribution systems (URDs) Simplified control functions developed in collaboration with Utility service crews New Windows based operating software Multiple display and chassis options

DART Cable Analyzer

DESCRIPTION The new Biddle DART Analyzer works in conjunction with any of the popular Biddle Power Fault Locating (PFL) Systems, including the Biddle PFL 1000, 4000 and 5000 Systems. A Biddle PFL System (incorporating this new DART Cable Analyzer), is perfect for those utilities tasked with regularly maintaining underground distribution systems (URDs). This system will locate bolted faults (shorts), blow-outs (opens), splices and high impedance non-linear faults on medium voltage distribution cable. To improve ease of use, the new DART Analyzer itself incorporates a new Windows based operating system plus other simplified control functions which were developed in collaboration with utility service crews. APPLICATIONS A Biddle Power Fault Locating System is used to locate high impedance cable faults using arc reflection, differential arc reflection and current impulse methods. During an arc reflection test, the analyzer acquires and captures a Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) image of the cable under surge condition. This TDR image is then displayed along with the TDR image of the cable without the surge condition. Using differential arc reflection, a patented algorithm eliminates unwanted and confusing reflections leaving only the location of the fault. The current impulse mode is available when an arc can not be sustained at the fault during a surge using the arc reflection method. The value of the new DART Cable Analyzer is demonstrated through improved fault locating efficiency and reduced cable stress incurred during the fault locating process. Efficiency and stress reduction is accomplished through the ability to determine approximate distance to a failure on an underground cable service. Prelocation of the failure eliminates the tedious process of surging or thumping a cable while crews walk the line in search of the failure point. FEATURES AND BENEFITS New, improved operating software - The new DART Cable Analyzer features new Windows based operating software for ease of use, plus provides flexibility to quickly load and use future software upgrades. Touchscreen interface - unique touchscreen interface prompts user through the testing procedure. Helps facilitate ease of use and can actually help personnel to use the test set. New, streamlined user interface user friendly, simplified control functions were developed in collaboration with utility service crews who regularly perform underground cable fault locating and testing. New procedure verification messages - provides a safety check list for service crews to ensure safe setup and execution of fault location (option).

Multiple display and mounting options - choose between a variety of Dart Cable Analyzer display options (monochromatic, color, etc.) and mounting configurations (stand alone for use with an existing cable fault locator, fliptop, cabinet mount, etc.) Multiple Display and Mounting Options The new Biddle DART Cable Analyzer is designed with the flexibility to select the mounting configuration which best fits your needs and the analyzer display which is most appropriate for your service crews. Description of Mounting Options: Option HG The HG option supports the PFL-1000 system configuration. Utilities moving forward on a URD loop sectionalizing strategy will find this system configuration particularly appealing. The DART and PFL-1000 are structured for convenient installation into the bin of a utility service truck. Option SA Option SA provides a convenient stand-alone package for those customers that only require an analyzer. The stand-alone DART can be used with existing Biddle cable fault systems or can be used to upgrade existing arc reflection systems. Option 4K Option 4K is offered to customers who are looking for a self contained, portable cable fault system. This mounting option supports the PFL-4000 system by mounting the DART analyzer into a convenient lid assembly that mounts directly to the PFL-4000 chassis. Option 5K A popular solution to many utilities is vehicle mounted equipment. Option 5K supports this platform by mounting the DART into the 19 inch cabinet used with the PFL-5000 Power Fault Location System. Combined, the DART and PFL-5000 become a complete, self-contained solution to URD maintenance. Option 6K A choice when a higher energy vehicle mounted system is required. Option 6K supports this platform by

mounting the DART as a component of the PFL-6000 Power Fault Location System. Combined, the DART and PFL-6000 become a complete, high energy system for fault locating on networks and feeders. Description of Display Options: Option C The active matrix color display is ideal for vehicle mounted packages. The display can be used with the HG, SA or 4K packages, but has limitationsin direct sunlight. Waveforms are easily identified on the color display center. Each waveform captured and displayed is represented in a different color. Option M The transflective monochrome display is by far the most versatile display option. In direct sunlight the display utilizes a reflective panel to illuminate the display panel, providing crisp clear viewing without washout. In darker environments, the display automatically turns on a backlight providing proper viewing in dim areas.
