Becoming a Successful Team Leader Leadership is challenging and being a team leader is no exception, for the reason that

we will somehow be charge nurses in our professional career in the future. This experience provides us a taste of what it would be like to handle the whole department of medical-surgical floor with your nursing staffs in providing direct and indirect patient care. In order to become a successful leader, respect must be earned by the leader, and should be given in turn to the staff. As a team leader, I must be self-motivated, exhibiting excitement and enthusiasm, in order to motivate my colleagues in performing their assigned tasks. My other strengths as a team leader are: motivating and challenging my colleagues to provide the highest quality of care for their patients, making sure that scheduled medications were given at the correct time, providing support in performing their nursing skills, such as starting an IV, discontinuing Foley, administering medications through NG tube; making sure that I assigned them to patients that has interesting cases in order to learn their conditions, helping my staffs in providing basic nursing care, such as turning, assisting in feeding their patients, and helping them in administering their medication when they are behind. In addition, I also need to make sure my staffs took their breaks so that they can function better in providing the needed care for their patient. Also, communicating with my colleagues regarding any abnormal VS or worsening condition. For example, Christines patient who has an elevated temperature of 38.4 degree C, I encouraged her to administer his PRN antipyretic medication and provide some nonpharmacological intervention to lower her patients temperature, then continually monitor his temperature. The patient retuned to his normal temperature after the interventions were provided. Another example, when Karen noted wheezing on her patient, she immediately called me to confirm that she was hearing a wheeze. When I confirmed that her patient has wheezing, I told

her to notify her RN and then call the RT for possible neb treatment or suctioning. The good collaboration and communication of the team in recognizing and reporting situations that are critical prevents any possible detrimental conditions that might occur for their unstable patients condition. Lastly, being able to establish trust and rapport to my colleagues patients and family members, and assuring them that my team was competent, and able to provide the highest quality of care to their love ones. My weaknesses as a team leader are helping too much for my team in delivering basic nursing care and in administering some of their medications. However, I see this as a positive behavior and attitude because in order to gain their trust and for the team to become successful, collaboration and communication is needed. I am now improving in my communication skills, yet I still need to devote time to improve it because someday I will be interacting with the different members of the health care team in providing care for my patients. I can improve my team leading abilities by improving my communication skills and be willing to admit and learn from failures, mistakes, and weaknesses. Most of the successful leaders know that the key to success is not in avoiding falling or failing, but to learn from their mistakes. The great leaders of today continue to improve themselves through constructive criticism from their team members and improving their weaknesses in every possible ways. Never stop learning to improve yourself as a team leader or a future charge nurse in the medicalsurgical unit. As a new nursing graduate, I expect that I will become a charge nurse someday in the facility that I will be working with. I will bring with me my positive attitude, compassion in providing nursing care, motivating others in their abilities and skills, being helpful to others, good communication skills, and continuously improving my weaknesses and mistakes to become an effective leader or a charge nurse.
