How to change the rear discs and pads on a 01 scenic

Tools Car Jack (plus wood block) Axel stand Regular 3/8th drive set (18, 19, 30mm sockets) TQ wrench Screwdriver (Blade small and mid) Wire brush

Spares 2 off Rear disc sets (inc new Hub nut and cover supplied with kit) 1 box of rear brake pads (supplied as both sides) 1 tin of brake cleaner (small) 1 tin of Copper grease Penetration oil Cloths various Rubber gloves

Method

Step 1 (Prep & raise the vehicle) Chock front wheels Take off the hand brake Jack up the L/H rear of the vehicle using a trolley jack and brace with an axel stand (very important) fig 1 Remove the L/H rear wheel (standard practice) 19mm socket

Step 2 (Remove old disc and pads) Remove hub cover (use a small flat blade screwdriver and a hammer to prize off) Remove 2 off brake calliper bolts (these may be a little stiff but brut force will be needed (use a hammer) 18mm socket fig 2

Once the bolts are off knock the calliper off the disc with a hammer, and remove old pads Undo the hub nut using the 30mm socket and a TQ wrench (quite stiff) fig 3 Remove the disc and dispose (including the hub nut and cover, as a new one comes with the replacement disc)

Step 3 (fit new disc and pads)

Fit the new disc onto the hub fig 5 & 6 Gain access to the brake fluid reservoir and remove cap to allow the brake fluid to move when you reset the callipers) Wind the calliper piston back fully using a wind back tool (rotate in a clockwise direction pushing in at the same time) the tool used in the picture is a universal multi-head wind back tool (15) fig 7 & 8

Fig 8 (wind back tool) Fit the new pads into the calliper fig 9 (fiddly. Make sure you use copper grease on the parts where the pad touches the calliper. NOT the brake surface. Slide calliper with pads fitted onto the new disc and install the 2 calliper mounting bolts Rotate disc to ensure free rotation (a little friction is ok as you will be engaging the new pads when you power-up the car

Do the R/H side as per this procedure

Step 4 (Recover vehicle and set new pads) Fit wheel Remove axel stand Remove trolley jack Switch car on Gently depress the brake pedal until the pedal feels stiff Pull on handbrake Road test.
