From Gariep Dam Nature Reserve, a tour of the 13.2km of tunnels through the Gariep dam wall, and down 1000 steps, takes you to the bedrock foundation of the Orange River. The central section of the wall, holding back 6000 million cubic litres of water, is arched to deflect the thrust of the water towards the outer solid-rock foundations. The water pressure is so tremendous, the wall in fact gives under it. These and other fascinating facts are revealed on your guided walk. On the southern side of the Gariep dam, ways to experience the Oviston Nature Reserves wildlife vary from hikes to horse or mountain-bike rides. Top of the three summer nature trails in the Tussen-die-Riviere Game Reserve which in winter is a hunting reserve is the Klipstapel hiking trail; an intriguing feature is a field of eroded dolerite pillars balancing precariously on their bases.

Kalkfontein Dam Nature Reserve

Heat and dust and the dry Free State air combine daily to create SEASONAL INFORMATION smouldering burnt-orange sunsets beyond the small koppies and Gate opening times 06:00 18:00 ridges of this nature reserve. Campers and anglers are drawn like Day visitors allowed magnets to the clear waters of the Kalkfontein dam, in which yellowfish (small- and largemouth species), Orange River mudfish, barbel and carp try to evade the anglers hooks. Water birds also flock to these waters including, in season, tall spindly-legged Greater and Lesser Flamingos, all pretty in pink. The hook-beaked Osprey competes with anglers as it lazily flies across the water surface before plunge-diving to snap up its hapless prey.

Doornkloof & Rolfontein Nature Reserves

These two nature reserves on the southern shore of Vanderkloof dam are set in a Karoo landscape of giant boulders and dolerite koppies. The confluence of the Seekoei and Orange rivers within Doornkloof, though, cuts a cool broad swathe across the dry sculpted landscape. In Entrance fee Rolfontein NR: 08:00 16:00 Doornkloof, hikers will be surrounded by large antelope, but Permits required more exciting is to come across the secretive brown hyena or, on a much smaller scale, the rare South African hedgehog. Rolfontein stands out for its impressive numbers of eland. Look out, too, for the elegant long-legged Blue Crane, endangered in South Africa and the countrys national bird. Along the river, listen for the hollow call of the African Fish Eagle.

Sandveld Nature Reserve

Situated between the arms of the Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve, Sandveld lies along one side of the Bloemhof dam, at the meeting of the Vaal and Vet rivers. Besides its wetlands, Kalahari thornveld is another of its diverse range of habitats, ensuring enormous variety in its bird life. Those who are happier with horns and hooves will be well satisfied tracking down wildlife in the nature reserve, and the soft-sand beaches fringing the dam are particularly pleasing to fishermen and water-sport lovers. Things to look out for are the diminutive Pygmy Falcon, which sometimes commandeers communal nests built by the Sociable Weavers, and White-backed Vultures that breed in large nests on the top of the camel thorn trees.

Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Park

At Makgagikgadi Pans, you get a taste of what the great prehistoric lake that once covered the Kalahari Basin must have looked like (when it rains!). Generally cracked and dry and peeling, this shimmering white flatland of crusty salt is stretched taut, connecting with the sky as far as the eye can see. Nothing survives on the salty surface, but grassland flourishes at the fringes. When rivers swell with unpredictable rains, its these sweet grasses that initiate a massive migration of Burchells zebra (15 000 to 20 000) and blue wildebeest (5000+) between grassland and the Boteti River in the west. Makgagikgadi is in fact a conglomeration of pans, Sowa and Ntwetwe being the biggest, and between them are sand dunes, desert-like tracts and very striking rocky islands (Khubu being a firm favourite). Most visually inspiring and a magnetic subject for writers, painters and early explorers are the fat-girthed, scraggly-headed baobabs peopling some of the islands and pan fringes. Thomas Baines, David Livingstone and the expeditionary Green brothers were all lured by the islands mythical trees. The gaunt isolated beauty has its drawbacks. The pans hide an insidious underworld of sink holes, sludge and slurping mud which can gobble up your rims and chassis in a single wheel-turn. Dry season is best, travel in convoy (be utterly self-sufficient), stick to well-travelled roads and never cross the pans on unmarked routes. The Makgagikgadi Pans National Park area embraces the rolling grasslands, with salt pans taking up only one-fifth. Besides the plains game, hippo in the more enduring pans are a bonus. Nxai Pan National Park is just north of Makgagikgadi, separated only by the Maun to Gweta main road. Mainly waterless fossil pans here are the result of a habitat thats been drier for longer, allowing grasses and acacias to take root. Islands of podded acacias, unique to Nxai, lend it special character. Gemsbok, red hartebeest, brown hyena and even elephant thrive in this desert habitat.
