Destination: The Walleye Capital of the World

BY DONNA LUEKE Is there finally a comprehensive plan for developing downtown Port Clinton and the waterfront that has the support of the Mayor, City Council and the people of Port Clinton? The answer to that, at least amongst the majority of the more than 200 local citizens gathered at the Elks Lodge on a blustery February night, seemed to be a guarded but enthusiastic yes. Port Clinton City Council President Linda Hartlaub and Mayor Vincent Leone chaired the event that featured a two-hour presentation and question and answer session by Medina-based developer Mike Rose, owner of Washington Properties Inc., and architect Dave Krebs, owner of the Cleveland architectural firm AODK Inc. There are studies to be done, votes to be had and details to be worked out before work could begin, but if all goes smoothly Rose estimates that work could begin later this year. Last night may have been a big step forward on that path. The primary reason for last nights presentation, according to Rose, was to make the community aware of the possibilities for the 14-acre waterfront site and to solicit community feedback and begin a dialogue with city stakeholders. Roses vision is to develop Port Clinton, The Walleye Capital of the World, as a destination regionally and nationally, to make it a gateway, rather than an access point, to use all the areas adjacent assets such as Cedar Point and Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island, but to emphasize Port Clinton as the hub. An early and integral part of the plan has the working title of Harborfront at Port Clinton and features a lowprofile, three-story lodge near the waterfront. The lodge would be surrounded by shops, condos and public spaces including an amphitheater, festival promenade and pedestrian streets that connect to the boardwalk, encompass Derby Pond and flow into a revitalized downtown area. The lodge, designed to attract fishermen and their families and corporations, would also serve as a focal point for greater community activity downtown. It would have a restaurant, conference center, spa, pub, game room, fitness center, fully-equipped docks and other amenities.

The downtown area revitalization would proceed concurrently with the Harborfront development and would focus on restoring the existing buildings to their architecturally interesting beauty, with street level shops and

upper level lofts and condos. Rose and Krebs said their experience has been that if downtown buildings are cleaned up and renovated, occupancy rates have sustained at close to 100%. Rose emphasized that a group of private investors, not the city, would put up the financing needed. By using private investment, the city will benefit from the additional revenues that flow into city coffers without having to deplete its existing funds, Rose said. We get invited to lots of communities, said Rose, and are very selective in who we talk to. We are very pleased with the Port Clinton people we have met. In Roses cooperative, holistic development model, we start with a block of clay and many hands are needed to mold that clay. Architect Krebs said, What jumped out for us was the stock of buildings in downtown that are so close to being beautiful. Then we got even more excited to see the potential of the waterfront. After the presentation, Port Clinton City Council members and the audience were invited to ask questions. Some of those questions and answers: Q: Councilwoman Kathy Mehl: Are you willing to discuss a 100-year lease (for the waterfront property) or a public/private partnership? A: Rose: We are willing to discuss whatever works. We dont need to own it. We just want to work on it. Q: Councilwoman Deb Benko: How would you make it year-round? A: Rose and Krebs: We have figured out plans so far for events for a solid nine months. Q: Councilwoman Nicole deFrietas: Would you consider working with other developers? A: Rose: Why would you want other developers when you have me? (laughter) We get totally involved in the

community. We see the waterfront and downtown as a complete package and would not be interested in one without the other. Q: Councilman Cole Hatfield: Where else have you developed beyond Wooster? A: Rose: We have been working with Medina for 20 years and Orrville for 5 years. Q: County Commissioner Jim Sass: How many jobs will be created--permanent, part-time, construction? A: Rose: In Wooster over 150 jobs have been added over the past 10 years. $20 million has been invested on our part. Q: Will you be using local or out-of-town labor? A: Rose: We try to use local contractors and craftsmen wherever we go. What I feel good about is how many local people worked on these jobs. Craig Trick of Port Clinton, who has been instrumental in bringing Rose together with the City, commented that, I have been following Mike for two years and talked to the communities he has worked with. They have nothing but great things to say about Mike and what he has done for their downtowns. Linda Hartlaub concluded the meeting by encouraging the community to talk with their council member and let them know any comments or questions. Mayor Leone echoed Hartlaubs comments, saying, It takes a community to bring it together. For Port Clinton Council members phone numbers and emails, check www.portclinton.com or call 419-734-5522. I found Wiley!!! No, not Wylie Walleye, Larry Wiley, the star running back of the undefeated Port Clinton football team of 1962. I had a Publishers Business Summit in Las Vegas last Saturday. I couldnt get a flight out until late Sunday, so I made arrangements to spend some time with Larry Wiley who lives in Vegas with his lovely wife Catherine (Coleman) who graduated from PCHS in 1965. They hope to come home in July for the Class of 1963s 50 year reunion and a special reunion of the 62 football team in September. I learned all about the football teams of the early 1960s. Larry picked me up at the hotel and took me to his home. Catherine, an avid LA

On Saturday, Feb. 16, the community helped to raise money for United Way in Ottawa County by shopping at Bassetts Market in an effort to meet Tom Bohlanders challenge to match the $7,500 he donated in honor of his longtime friend and business partner, Ron Case. Bassetts reported 259 transactions of $50 or more that day with Mike donating $5 for each, and that total was $1,295. Today is the deadline for Toms challenge, and according to M.J. Siewert, they are still a little shy of reaching the $15,000 challenge goal. You can drop off a donation at the United Way office located in the Sutton Center, or you can call in a pledge by phone at 419734-6645.

Good luck to the Oak Harbor High School wrestlers headed to Columbus this weekend for the State Championships. They will be led by returning state placer Luke Kramer. No doubt Luke wants to add his name to the distinguished list of Rocket wrestlers who have won state titles. Also, good luck to the Port Clinton High School girls basketball team who notched their unprecedented 20th win of the season last Saturday in a thrilling sectional championship win over their rivals from Oak Harbor.

Coats Program, due to the increasing needs and the generosity of the community. The Salvation Armys Warm Winter Coats program usually runs from Nov. 1-Jan. 31. This year the program has been extended to run through February. This program is based on donations from the general public of gently used and new coats to be cleaned and redistributed cost-free to local families in need of a winter coat. Executive Cleaners had provided cleaning for all donated coats. This is the 17th year this program has been providing coats to the residents of Ottawa County. Residents in need of a warm winter coat can come to The Sutton Center and pick up coats for their families. Last year, they collected and distributed over 1,100 coats to local families. This year over 1,200 coats have been distributed. If you are in need of a warm winter coat, stop by The Salvation Army in The Sutton Center or call Director Maureen Saponari at 419732-2769.

Obituaries
Joyce Lammers
March 4, 1925-Feb. 21, 2013 Joyce M. Lammers, of Danbury Township, died peacefully Feb. 21, eleven days shy of her 88th birthday, at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, from complications from Lewy Body Disease. She was born Joyce Martina Kibbel on March 4, 1925, in Oak Harbor to William H. and Sylvia (Paulsen) Kibbel. She married Walter R. (Sonny) Lammers in 1956 and moved to Danbury, where she helped him build the familys business, Sonnys Beach. Seven years ago, she moved to Maumee to be cared for by her family. She spent her life sacrificing for and devoted to her family, finding endless joy in her children, their wives and, eventually, her grandchildren. She delighted in quilting, gardening, bird watching, and other nature outside her window, as well as caring for a parade of spoiled dogs. She was an avid Cleveland sports fan, particularly fond of her Indians and Cavaliers. She remembered the Cleveland Indians last championship, and the hope for another Cleveland championship lives on in her family. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: Bill (Nancy) of Olmsted Falls, Guy (Linda Marckel) of Maumee, John (Cindy) of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and Pete (Sueann) of Danbury; and six grandchildren: Kirk and Jackie; Kaylee and Lauren; and Sarah Barbera and Christina Curley. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982, her parents and her sister, Helen O. Hetrick, in 2000. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, Feb.25, at Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Peninsula Chapel, Lakeside-Marblehead. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Danbury Township, with Rev. Chris Young officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Peninsula Little League Baseball, Back To The Wild (www.backtothewild.com), or the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 East River Road in Perrysburg, Ohio. may be made in her name to a charity of your choice. www.Nosek-McCreer y. com.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Look Beyond is the theme for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 2013. Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities and other related organizations celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March, and invite you to consider the true meaning of this years theme, Look Beyond. Statewide, and across the nation, organizations devoted to serving individuals with developmental disabilities are planning special events in March to raise public awareness of the many abilities people have, regardless of disability. Look Beyond encourages people to understand that when people with disabilities are welcomed into local neighborhoods, workplaces, houses of worship, and schools everyone wins. This is a time when our organization focuses on encouraging the public to better understand the individuals we serve, said Melinda Slusser, Superintendent of Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities. During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we encourage people to learn more about the 322 people in this community who have developmental disabilities and to recognize that all of us have talents and abilities that we can offer to make this a better place to live. Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities will kick off its recognition of March as DD Awareness Month with an Open House. The Open House will be Tuesday, March 12, from 4-7 p.m. at Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities, 235 North Toussaint S., Oak Harbor. PCMS students selected Judge Hany goes back for District Music Festival to school at PCHS
Judge Frederick (Fritz) C. Hany II of the Ottawa County Municipal Court recently had the opportunity to speak to the Port Clinton High School government classes. Hany was welcomed by Mr. Greg Scalf, Port Clinton High School educator, who relayed to the students that Judge Hany is a long serving and respected Judge who is known as a fair judge, treating everyone who comes in to the courtroom with respect. PCMS students in District orchestra: Tyler Williams, Kyle Fitzpatrick, Deanna Elliott, Kayce Deal, Searia Havens, Hannah Mallory, Jaden Aragon, Spencer Sullivan On Saturday, Feb. 23, seventeen Port Clinton Middle School musicians took part in the Ohio Music Education Associations Middle School District Honors Festival at Tiffin Middle School. The 30 member Honors Orchestra was directed by June Zweidinger, retired director from Willard City Schools. Port Clinton orchestra members, under the direction of Mr. Brian Stitak, included: Hannah Mallory, Deanna Elliott, Kyle Fitzpatrick, Tyler Williams, Jaden Argon, Kayce Deal and Spencer Sullivan. Judge Hany spoke about the types of cases heard by the Municipal Court that run from the typical to the unusual and from the sad and unfortunate to the sometimes enlightening or humorous. The students were given information about the Ottawa County Municipal Court as well as Ohios system of justice. Many laws were discussed as well as the penalties which could result from breaking those laws. The students asked many insightful questions and left with a deeper appreciation and knowledge of the judicial system. The Courts Chief Probation Officer and Port Clinton High School graduate Trevor Johnson was a guest speaker as well. It is also an opportunity that we have to not only answer students questions about their justice system, but to engage with them in a meaningful exchange of ideas, Johnson stated. I thank Mr. Scalf and all of our teachers for the jobs they do. They deserve a lot of credit for truly making a difference in our kids lives, stated Hany. In addition to his daily judicial responsibilities, Judge Hany also serves as a faculty instructor for the Ohio Judicial College, judges teaching judges to fulfill continuing educational requirements.

Congratulations to the new members, sophomores James Dorko, Caleb Gerber, Joseph Mintz, and Taylon Molnar; juniors Allison Ahrens and Alyssa Biro; and senior Morgan Snyder. Tara Martin Lady T Nails

Welcomes

35 years at Edgewood Manor

On Friday, Feb. 22, Kaye Lipstraw, Director of Nursing at Edgewood Manor, celebrated 35 years with the facility. The facility is holding a celebration on her accomplishment in March. Lipstraw completed her RN degree at the St. Vincent School of Nursing in Toledo and she began her career at the Medical College of Ohio (now University of Toledo Medical Center.) In 1978, she began her career at Edgewood Manor as a charge nurse. At the time, Kayes mother, Mary Mehlow, was the Director of Nursing. Mary remained in that position until 1990 when she retired. Lipstraw has had great success while at Edgewood Manor. She has moved up the ladder through hard work, dedication and compassion for the residents and their families. She has lead the nursing team to outstanding achievements such as ten consecutive years of Clinical Excellence, a measure of clinical statistics that demonstrate a high level of quality care, and in 2012 a Deficiency Free Health Survey as awarded by the Ohio Department of Health. Kaye has exceeded every expectation that I could ever have in a Director of Nursing, business partner and friend, said Lori Opfer, CEO at Edgewood Manor. She has allowed the facility to grow and expand while pro-

viding excellent care to our residents and training to her nurses. Edgewood Manor is truly lucky to have found such a gem in Kaye. Opfer added. When asked why she has stayed at Edgewood for so long, Lipstraw had a simple response, the people. She stated, I have seen many new faces over the years but we have always had an exceptional group people working here. Any facility is a building with walls. It is the people inside that make it special and that is why I am still here. She also added that she has had great pleasure in watching her staff grow and develop. It is so wonderful to be able to share my experiences with new nurses and watch them blossom and take on their own style. Looking back that has been extremely rewarding to me. Lipstraw was born, raised and still resides in Oak Harbor. She and her husband Bob have two sons and several grandchildren with whom they spend much of their free time. Michael and his wife Stacey live in Millbury and have three children, Avery, 6, Calvin, 4 and Lacey, 3. Jeff and his wife Angie reside in Graytown and have one son, Ryker, 2 Edgewood Manor is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center located in Port Clinton, Ohio. For more information regarding the facility, call Carrie McGlothlin at 419734-5506.

Port Clinton girls finish 13th at state swim meet

BY YANEEK SMITH Behind a stellar performance from junior Cheyenne Meek, the Port Clinton girls swim team finished 13th at the Division II State Meet. Meek placed in fourth events, two individually and two via relays. Individually, she finished fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.69 seconds and was fifth in the 100 free in 51.80. Along with McKenzie Stine, Alyssa Zoeller and Allie Schoreder, Meek helped the Skins finish ninth in the 200 medley relay Cheyenne Meek in 1:52.77. She was also part of the 200 free relay team of Stine, Schroeder and Taylor Steyer that was 15th in 1:41.41. As a team, Port Clinton finished with 51 points, just ahead of Cincinnati Country Day and Perkins, who tied for 14th with 48 points apiece. Oak Harbor senior Derek Griffin also placed, earning AllOhio status when he finished 16th in the diving competition with 286 points. Port Clintons Emily Zibert was 21st in the girls competition with 140.55 points.

Port Clinton outlasts OH in sectional final

BY YANEEK SMITH After defeating Oak Harbor twice in convincing fashion during the regular season, the Port Clinton Redskins needed a clutch performance to defeat the Rockets this time around, beating Oak Harbor, 5245, to win the Division II Sectional Title. Led by junior center Tiffany Colston, Port Clinton rallied from a six-point, firsthalf deficit, outscoring the Rockets, 26-18, in the second half. Colston, who had a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds, helped the Skins slowly pull away from Oak Harbor in the fourth quarter. After Rocket guard Makayla Carpenter scored on a threepoint play with under a minute to play in the third quarter, Port Clinton outscored Oak Harbor, 18-9, from that point forward. Hannah Weaver and Emily Ashley helped pace the Skins with 11 points apiece and Hope Thorbahn chipped in with eight. With the win Port Clinton improves to 20-3, setting a school record for singleseason victories. Oak Harbor, which had won six straight games, finishes the season at 16-8. The Skins advance to play Rossford at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Lake High School in Millbury in the Div. II District Semifinal. Oak Harbors been playing very well lately and theyre a very good basketball, said Port Clinton head coach Toby Bickel said. I take my hat off to them. They played very well in the first half. I didnt think we played really good defense in the first half considering that we knew what they were going to be doing. Offensively, we werent really aggressive. I thought in the second half we played much better defense and we got the ball in around the basket with Hope and Tiffany and Emily. I always say it, I think defense is what turned it around in the second half. Not giving them open threes, that kind of stuff. Carpenter and Maria Boers led the Rockets with 11 points apiece and Abbie Gezo and Andrea Cecil each scored 10 points. Boers helped key a second-quarter run as she connected on three consecutive 3-pointers to help give Oak Harbor its biggest lead of the game. The difference in the second half came to two things Port Clinton tightening up its defense and the Skins crashing the offensive boards to get second-chance points. We didnt shoot the ball real well tonight, coach Bickel said. When you play against a zone, youve got to have some patience. We missed some shots against them and crashed the boards and got some offensive rebounds. Its a little tougher (for a defense) to rebound out of a zone. This is huge for the kids. 19-3 doesnt really mean anything if youre 0-1 in the tournament. Its nice to get this first tournament game out of the way. Its nice to get a win. Oak Harbor will lose four key players from this years squad. Boers, Carpenter, Gezo and Erin Bryant, will all be graduating in the spring. What I like is theres a lot of respect (between the teams), Rockets head coach Tom Kontak said. When kids and teams and programs go at each other hard with good respect, that is a great part of the high-school environment. That is important. Thats a part of what high-school athletics is all about. To be where we were at the start of the season in November, and to be where we are now in February, its unbelievable. Im disappointed for the four seniors, because these kids have shown tremendous leadership.

Oak Harbor sends four wrestlers to state

BY YANEEK SMITH Led by district champion Luke Cramer, the Oak Harbor wrestling team is sending four wrestlers to the Division II State Meet after its performance this weekend at the district tournament in Bowling Green. Cramer, who placed fourth at state at 138 pounds last season, dominated his weight class, winning all four of his matches in convincing fashion. Cramer (38-5) won his first two matches by fall before defeating reigning state champion Chris Moore of Clyde, 6-0, before beating Bryans Brock Nagel by technical fall, 17-2, in the finals. As a team, the Rockets finished sixth with 83.5 points, just behind Wapakoneta (86.0). Clyde was first with 124 points, followed by Central Catholic (113.5) and Perkins (105.5). Sophomore T.J. Lawrence was second at 285, winning three matches before falling to Benjamin Logans Beau Harmon, 3-2, in the finals. Lawrence, who is 31-11 on the season, had a 22-match winning streak heading into the final match. Senior Jared Chambers, who qualified for state last year, upset top seed Jacob Wright of Franklin in the second round before falling to eventual-champion Seth Williams of Tiffin Columbian in the semifinals, 13-3. Chambers (30-9), however, regrouped and won his next two matches to finish third. Fellow senior Alec Bowlick, now 3410 on the season, won one match before falling to eventual champion, Nick Pauff of Elida, 3-2, in the second round before recovering to win four straight matches in the consolation bracket to finish third. In 2012, the Rockets finished 19th as a team with 26 points behind fourth-place finishes from Cramer and Alex Bergman. This time around, theyll be looking to improve upon that.

Down nine points in the second half, things werent looking so good for Oak Harbor. But behind a spirited effort from its seniors and a great performance from freshman Andrea Cecil, the Rockets rallied and defeated Perkins in thrilling fashion, 39-38, in the Division II Sectional Semifinals Wednesday night at Sandusky High School. Trailing, 29-20, midway thru the third quarter, Oak Harbor (16-7) responded by going on a 15-0 run to take control of the contest before holding off a late Pirate (158) rally to claim victory. We knew that if we didnt (start scoring), we had no chance, Cecil said of the Rockets spurt. After halftime, we started playing (better) because we knew that if we didnt, the season would be over and we didnt want to send our seniors out like that. Cecil got the run started with a basket to cut the deficit to seven and back-to-back steals by Maria Boers help set up easy baskets for Makayla Carpenter and Cecil, respectively, to make it 29-26. Boers later tied it up with a three-pointer from the left wing with 6:53 left in the fourth quarter, helping to swing momentum in Oak Harbors favor. With the score knotted at 29, Cecil gave the Rockets a two-point lead with a short jumper, giving them their first lead since it was 2-0. She scored the games next four points to push the lead to 35-29 before Perkins mounted all rally that fell just short. In all, she finished with 10 of the Rockets 15 points during the spurt. The Pirates cut the deficit to 36-34 with under a minute to play but Carpenter responded by driving to the hoop and finding Gezo inside for a basket that put the Rockets up four. Cecil led the Rockets with 17 points, Abbie Gezo finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Boers chipped in with seven. Perkins center Shannon Ebert led all scorers with 19 points, Kayla Yost had nine and Darcy Daniel chipped in with seven. The Pirates played without one of their key players, Abbey Seeholzer. My thinking was, We better start scoring some baskets and start catching up pretty quick, Oak Harbor head coach Tom Kontak said of his mindset before the team went on their run. We did have a timeout, but we knew there was a lot of game left (to be played). Even though the offense can be off, the defense was on. The girls carried out their assignments beautifully and they communicated. Thats the beauty of basketball. Its communication under pressure thats what Im most happy with. The girls trusted each other enough to switch and talk to each other when the pressure was highest. I couldnt be more happy for those four seniors. They get a chance to play in the sectional final. In the first half, however, the Pirates controlled the tempo and led, 14-8, after one quarter and 23-16 at halftime. We knew we had to come out with intensity (in the second half) because theyre only up by seven, said Gezo, who had to work hard to keep Ebert in check. We said, We need to show some heart and (that) we wanted this. And we came out with the win. Ebert is a great player and she made me work hard tonight. It was also the first win in nine tries for the senior quartet of Gezo, Boers, Carpenter and Erin Bryant. It just felt good for us seniors because we hadnt beaten Perkins in all of our four years, Gezo said. This was our senior goal. It was the third meeting between the teams this season, and, like the previous two, came right down to the wire. The Pirates won the first meeting, 46-44, in overtime before defeating the Rockets, 51-44, on Feb. 2. Since that loss, however, the Rockets have reeled off a string of six straight wins and built some momentum heading into the postseason. There were turnovers and no offensive flow (in the second half), Perkins head coach Ray Neill said. We got a little tentative, and with the tentativeness and indecision came turnovers. We were up nine midway thru the third quarter and the momentum changed in about three possessions. We never got our confidence back, but we hung in there. I take as much blame as anybody for that. We lost all offensive flow. We tip our caps to Oak Harbor. Neill was appreciative of the effort of his three seniors, Ebert, Daniel and Yost. I want to say goodbye to three seniors that have been pretty prominent for us in their four years in Shannon Ebert, Darcy Daniel and Kayla Yost.

NBOH donates to Oak Harbor revitalization

Earlier this year a group of volunteer business owners and residents gathered to organize what is now the Oak Harbor Downtown Implementation Committee. The goal of the committee is to revitalize the downtown area by bolstering the existing economic base and identifying opportunities that will attract and accommodate future investment. Over the past several months, the committee focused on how to organize and create the necessary amenities such as atmosphere, land use, marketing and branding to draw people back into Oak Harbors downtown district. It was decided that the first step in the revitalization was to spruce up the heart of downtown by improving the streetscape. Plans were designed and 13 new benches, 30 flowerpots and 17 trash receptacles in a Victorian motif have been ordered. Our goal is to receive sponsorships for as many of these items as possible through donations, featuring a plaque recognition program, explained Mike Shadoan of Radiant Windows and Chairman of the Committee. The program would display a plaque with the sponsors name placed on the item, recognizing their commitment to the community. National Bank of Ohio donated $2,500 to this phase of the revitalization project. We want to help make Oak Harbor attractive and continue to be proud of where we work and live. Putting Oak Harbor on the map as a nice clean community benefits us all, quoted Gary Macko, President and CEO of NBOH. NBOH is just one of many who are helping to defray the costs in the downtown revitalization. We would like to complete phase one by the spring of 2013, or by our July 4 celebrations at the latest, Shadoan shared optimistically. The partnership and commitment of local individuals and company sponsors, such as NBOH, will allow the committee to achieve this goal and advance their plans. Ongoing plans include a second phase of the beautification process which would consist of decorative poles with banners, bicycle racks and trees; while the third phase would be focused on the development along the riverfront area. Forms for those interested in supporting the Oak Harbor Downtown Revitalization Implementation Committee are available at the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce office. The implementation of this plan is expected to take between five and twenty years, depending on public response. To review more information about the Oak Harbor downtown revitalization plan, please visit www.oakharbor.oh.us, or contact Mike Shadoan at Radiant Windows/419.706-6034, or Valerie Winterfield at the Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce at 419-898-0479.
