Pig Club Cares for Goats Too

On November 10, most of the members of Weir River Farm Muddy Buddies pig club helped to build a new fence surrounding the goat pen. A few months ago, the farm lost their beloved female goat Miriam. When she left, the farm became a sad place. It was not as cheery and upbeat as usual. Then, the staff at the farm told us that they would be getting 3 new goats. There would be a mother and 2 babies accompanying her at the farm. Billy, the male goat would still be living at the farm as usual with his new goat friends. If you had been to the farm before the project, you may have noticed that the gaps in between the wires of the fence were too big. A baby goat could easily get out or hurt themselves. So to fix the problem, the club came ready to tackle any job. We removed the rusty nails holding the fence together. Then it was just a matter of pulling away the actual fence. We were assisted by a farm hand named Winn. He helped us cut the new fence and nail it back into place. Using crowbars and hammers, nailing the fence was completed in under 15 minutes. After we finished we brought Billy the goat down to check out his new home. He seemed to approve of it. Now that the new goats are living at Weir River Farm, and they seem to enjoy their new home, we can rest assured that no goats will be hurt or escape because of our new goat house project.

Hot to Trots Horse 4-H Makes Cancer Caps

On one snowy Saturday in February, members of the Hot to Trots 4-H Horse Club got together to sew Cancer Caps. Chemotherapy kills cancer cells but a side effect is often temporary baldness. These soft, warm head scarves keep the patient’s head warm and comfortable. The different colors and patterns help patients feel better about dressing up and going out. But they are pricey and sell online for about $15 each. Many patients cannot afford all of the caps they need.

Hot to Trot member Isabel Pica wanted to help and she suggested that our club make cancer caps as part of a community service project. Isabel, her mom Beth Pica and her grandmother Kathy Osborn set up 6 sewing machine stations in their Rockland home and taught our members how to cut a pattern, iron it, and sew it. Some of our volunteers had

never sewn before.
