Demographics: United States

ABOUT THIS REPORT

Scope & Method

This report forecasts the 2017 US resident population, number of births, number of
households, number of marriages, and the civilian labor force. The resident population
encompasses any person residing in the 50 US states and the District of Columbia
including foreign citizens and immigrants (regardless of legal status). The resident
population is segmented in terms of age group as follows:

under 15 years
15-24 years
25-34 years
35-54 years
55-64 years
65 years and older
65-74 years
75-84 years
85 years and older.

To illustrate historical trends the resident population, number of births, number of

households, the labor force, and the various segments are provided in annual series
from 2002 to 2012; the number of marriages are reported at five-year intervals for 2007
and 2012. Forecasts emanate from the identification and analysis of pertinent statistical
relationships and other historical trends/events as well as their expected
progression/impact over the forecast period. Changes in quantities between reported
years of a given total or segment are typically provided in terms of five-year compound
annual growth rates (CAGRs). For the sake of brevity, forecasts are generally stated in
smoothed CAGR-based descriptions to the forecast year, such as demand is projected
to rise 3.2% annually through 2017. The result of any particular year over that period,
however, may exhibit volatility and depart from a smoothed, long-term trend, as
historical data typically illustrate.
Other various topics including immigration, world population, and NAFTA population
trends are also covered in this report. A full outline of report items by page is available
in the Table of Contents.
