Lesson 8: POST READING ACTIVITIES Objectives: At the end of the discussion, at least 83% of BEEd 3A students should be able

to: 1. Identify different post reading techniques that suitable in developing thinking skills (HOTS) 2. Provide clear and engagement activities to supplement learning. 3. Appreciate the importance of post reading activities to the learning process.

Introduction: This lesson gives us wide understandings about the significance of varied activities after reading. It reinforces or supplements a meaningful and permanent learning. A child that is exposed in different activities develops their critical thinking. Post reading techniques involves and integrated to four macro-skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). Motive Questions: 1. Why is it that post reading activities is important in the process of reading? 2. What are those post reading techniques that are appropriate in developing Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) especially critical and creative thinking? 3. How these extended activities develop students critical and creative thinking? Explain.

Contents: POST READING ACTIVITIES Engaging activities are essential to emergent reading because these activities sustain the students interest and active involvement in any reading activities. It extend students reading experiences, comprehension, appreciation, and social interaction develop childrens love for reading. Post reading does not automatically require and is not strictly limited to another reading activity. Instead, these would depend: On the skills being developed in the reading process On the grammar points introduced in the reading text On the theme emphasized to the kids

On the elements of the genre presented such as characters and plot, especially to the beginning readers

Moreover, these post reading activities may be elicited from a. b. c. d. Listening Speaking Reading Writing e. Social and physical skills f. Games and play g. Artworks

1. Listening that may be used as engaging activities include listening to songs, CD/DVD materials for rhymes, riddles, poems, phonemes, pronunciations, spelling, listening to recorded conversations, narration and description. 2. Speaking that may be used as extension activity and social interaction include circle time, gray singing, poem reciting, dramatizing, role-playing, narrating, describing retelling, shared reading, imitating, sounds of animal characters and other prominent object in the story, sharing ones experiences. 3-5 Refer to reference back. Reading-Shifting Correction Reading and writing are interrelated since reading provides input to the child and this input is significantly transferred to writing as the output. We can observe that exposing emergent learners to printed texts, they actually decode what they understands and attempt to reinvent by applying it to new one. And this attempts of young learners help in their writing fluency. As they progress in the reading, they develop advance writing skills to transfer their ideas about the text read. Kids demonstrate their critical thinking as they construct their over writing their over readinglike acts and through recreational reading like reading aloud, storytelling and concept reading by literate adults.
