Admission Regulations for the Master of Science (M.Sc.

) study program Geology


Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Geosciences
Based on 29, paragraph 2, clauses 5 and 6 of the federal state law from January 1 2005 (GBI p. 1), th last amended by article 1 of the law of November 20 2007 (GBI p. 505), the Senate of the University of th Freiburg decided on the following regulations during its session of March 12 2008: 1 General information Admission to the study program Master of Science in Geology is possible only for the winter semester. The application deadline for each year is May 15. The application including all necessary documents has to have arrived by that date at the University of Freiburg. The number of available study places in this curriculum is restricted. 2 Responsibility (1) The admission committee decides about admission or refusal of applicants. The committee for the M.Sc. curriculum Geology is elected by the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Geosciences. It consists of three persons who are part of the professorate or the academic service. At least one of the members has to belong to the professorate. The term of office of the members lasts two years. Reappointment is possible. (2) The admission committee determines a ranking order of the applicants at the latest three weeks after the application deadline. (3) Based on this ranking, the central University office for student affairs issues the letters of acceptance. Letters of refusal are issued by the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Geosciences. 3 Admission requirements (1) Admission to the M.Sc. study program Geology, being held in English, is only possible for persons who have completed a professionally qualifying appropriate study program of at least 3 years at a German or foreign university with at least above-average results. The following study programs are generally considered to be appropriate: Geology, Earth Sciences, Geosciences, and Mineralogy; Natural Sciences (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Biology); as well as Environmental Science. On the equivalence of other study degrees, the admission committee will decide according to each individual case. If the candidates with a first final degree do not fulfill the requirements mentioned above, they may exceptionally be admitted to the M.Sc. curriculum for special reasons, if they prove that they dispose of the required special knowledge and if they can be expected to complete the study program successfully. dispose of sufficient knowledge of the English language. The applicants have to prove that they have passed the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with at least 550 points (paper-based version) or 220 points (computer-based version) or 80 points (internetbased version). Applicants with English as mother tongue or applicants, who completed their first professionally qualifying study degree in a study program mostly taught in English, are exempt from proving their knowledge of the English language by a language test. The admission committee will decide on the acceptance of other certificates.

(2) Admission before finishing the first professionally qualifying study program: In case the applicant has completed a professionally qualifying university study program, but by the application deadline does not yet have a certified copy of the degree, a provisional confirmation by the university about completion of the degree (including the grade point average) will be sufficient. In this case, the certified copy must be shown at the latest by the matriculation. In case the applicant has not yet completed the university study program by the application deadline, he/she has to prove that he/she will presumably fulfill the admission requirement (final degree of study with above-average results) by a certificate of all results rendered so far (including information about grades and ECTS-points) and a confirmation of the grade of the final paper or, alternatively, of its disposal or at least its registration. In this case, admission will be granted only if successful completion of the study program will be proven at the latest by the matriculation date with a certified copy of the final certificate and transcripts. Additionally, a confirmation approving that the study program has been completed with above-average results has to be submitted to the admission committee.

(3) Further admission requirements consist in submitting the documents as listed in detail in 4. (4) Only candidates who have applied according to the rules given above and in due time take part in the admission procedure. 4 Application (1) For a correct application, the following documents have to be submitted: the completed application form of the Faculty for Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Geosciences of the University of Freiburg (download from website) a certified copy of the final certificate of the completed professionally qualifying university study program (a certified translation of the copy is necessary if the degree has been achieved at a foreign university) or respectively the proofs mentioned in 3, paragraph 2 a list of all successfully attended courses including a time overview of each course (in German or in English) a proof of the language knowledge a motivation letter (one to two pages in German or English), in which the applicant exposes his/her private motives for beginning the M.Sc. program a curriculum vitae, at most two pages long (in German or English).
