Political Talk Shows in Pakistani Media

Media Seminar

Kal Tak: Express News Javed Choudhry - Pretty annoying for his open bias against everyone but the Sharif Brothers which is quite visible in his shows. Listening to his butchered English accent and dented Urdu coupled with his boring story telling that he wrongly thinks mesmerizes the audience somehow, but one thing it does for sure is that it puts the allegedly corrupt guests in the back seat during the debate. His dislike for secular and corrupt parties the likes of PPP and MQM is apparent.

Off The Record: ARY News Kashif Abbassi - He knows how to get the best and worst out of politicians during his show. Record amount of fights between politicians have broken out during his shows. He conceals his political bias the best, but he definitely has soft corner for Shaykh Rasheed. What's admiring about this fellow is that he's not afraid to ask bold questions and put the govt. in the back seat. Quite interesting because he's always bringing something new to the table and exposing weaknesses of the hosts.

Yaqeen: Dunya News Sana Bucha - She's there for her looks and support for the Sharif brothers. A die hard and closet supporter of the Sharif Brothers. She makes the Sharif brothers look so innocent and nice that they only opt to join her talk shows. Pretty much all interviews of the Sharif family have been recorded by her. Come up with a nick name for her - Sharif's Angel. Enough said. Khara Sach: ARY News Mubashar Luqman - He's not afraid to ask any kind of questions, knows how to put down his own guests with rude jokes, and exposes everyone so well except MQM. Hes a huge MQM defender; mind you he would risk his job for MQM. Never seen him criticize MQM and expose their violent side. With his big mouth he knows how to chew the corruption of PPP government officials; he respects the honest people openly and disrespects the corrupt - except MQM. Though no fond of the religious parties or religious talk.

On The Front: Dunya News Kamran Shahid - big opportunist. One day he'll be praising Imran Khan, the next day he'll be on the anti-Imran bandwagon. What does that say? Well you can conclude he's a Rent-a-host. But one must admit he brings interesting and bold issues to the table, for ex he loves talking about sexual harassment, one smart thing about this fellow is that he chooses his topics and

guests so wisely and knows what questions stir up a good debate. Pretty impartial it seems as he has no soft corner for any party, but Veena Malik for sure.

Tonight with Jasmeen: Samaa News Jasmeen - Does anyone have a clue what the topic of her show is all about? I just lose my ears to her screams. Jasmeen auntie should make roti's, not talk shows. I would watch her cooking show with great enthusiasm.

Live with Talat: Express News Talat Hussain, Although Mr. Talat himself is leftist but he is the only unbiased anchor in the talk shows. More over before being leftist he is nationalist. So his biasness is mostly for the country and national interest. Some of his outstanding programs were on Raymond Davis case. Although recently, he is a bit irritated and frustrated by the blatant lies and insincerity of the current crop of the politicians. Appreciable when he does his own analysis on any critical issues. Summary: + Nationalist touch always present in his programs. + Personal biases are well contained + Manages the show well + Quite sharp + Sometime does non-political shows also which are quite interesting like the one over Arfa Karim

Capital Talk: Geo News Hamid Mir, One of the more informative shows. Mr. Hamid Mir is quite well connected and has lot of inside information. His shows are always political. Although he look like to side with right wing but he is a left wing anchor. He does show his biases time and again. Not force his opinion on people. Summary + Quite sharp

+ Lot of Information in his program + Get some of the most important people in his program - Biases are not well contained (Supporting leftist views are quite apparent at times).

Shahid Nama: Express News Dr. Shahid Masood, He is one of the oldest anchors of the political talk shows. It wont be wrong to call him the father of taking the initiative of the true political talk shows culture in Pakistan. But he is not journalist, so he maybe well connected but he lacks lot of information. Sometime he repeats a thing or two too many times in his programs. Questions are also not very well formed and to the point. He himself holds rightist views. But more on the center right. Summary + Mostly have important guests in his program - Takes too much time in his own analysis and talk - Questions are not well formed and not very clear.
