For training needs analysis, the model that I find very useful and handy is ROLE.
In October 2008, when interacting with prospects for their training needs, it got developed by order of my questions! I was asking a set of questions students seeking a certain qualification, training or coaching in a particular sphere. For my own understanding, like for diagnosis, I asked what they were doing at work. So I would find out about their roles in their respective fields that gave me R. And next question was about their learning objectives, giving O. I would then find out about their learning so far, or what have they learnt, so to know their level of knowledge. Hence to find out about their learning gave me L and E in my TNA model stood for emphasis on specific topics or areas of the desired subject.

This model was officially adopted by SitesPower, a leading institute for professional training & development, based in Dubai for their ILM program (Institute of Leadership & Management, UK). Susan Martins, the External Verifier for ILM, UK in UAE appreciated the ROLE TNA model, and made it mandatory for the institutions to adopt this model for all ILM programs that they were offering.

ROLE stands for: R Individuals job role, key responsibilities, an overview of the job description. O Objectives needed to achieve through sought course, training, and qualification. L Learning so far, or what have they learnt, so to know their level of knowledge, their education attained, relevant trainings attended, so on & so forth. E Emphasis on specific topics or areas of the desired subject.
The ROLE model is efficient & effective technique to carry out training customization, for tailoring a course, and for TNA. I have been using it ever since and Im positive you too will find it useful.
