3-S Process Chapter 1 Assignments Matter

What statements can you make about the reading? What did you learn that others need to know? Assignments that are well prepared have the potential to be game changers for students during the teaching and learning processes. When creating an assignment, a teacher must make the task relevant and aligned with the standards. On page 9 Dougherty writes, Teaching and learning constitute a reciprocal process. If teachers do not challenge students with assignments, the learning loses meaning. Assignments involve a cycle of learning where the student applies their knowledge and produces something from that knowledge, showing evidence of learning. Three Principles of Effective Instruction 1. Effective instruction is clear about what to teach and how Instruction and assignments should be aligned with short and long-term goals 2. Effective teaching is formative, providing feedback that allows teachers to adjust their instruction and scaffold learning Instruction needs flexible and fluid. Check for understanding and make necessary adjustments 3. Effective teaching sets high expectations Assignments and tasks should challenge the students and be worthwhile What strategies will you try? How will you apply your learning? Putting myself in the shoes of my students is something I want to remember as I begin teaching. If I actually to through the steps to complete the task or assignment I ask student to do, I will understand more about it. Questions I need to ask when creating tasks and assignments:

Is this worth their time? Is this worth their effort? Am I challenging the students? What are they gaining by completing this? Is it aligned with the standards and essential learning outcomes? Will this show evidence of understanding? Are the students engaged?
