SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND LEADERSHIP ADM-320: BUSINESS STATISTICS

WORKSHOP SIX INTRODUCTION

This workshop is about quality. Statistical Quality Control includes tools that help identify when the quality of goods produced or services provided fall outside quality standards. Plotting the mean and range on charts allows us to determine when the quality of products or services is within or out of control. These quality control charts are an extension of confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. The enemy of quality is variation. However, variation is inherent in the output of all production and service processes. No two parts produced by a machine are the same; no two transactions performed by a bank teller are the same. With variation in output comes variation in the quality of the product or service. If this variation is unacceptable to customers, customers may be lost and the company may not survive. Two causes of variations are covered: 1. Common causes occur randomly in nature and cannot be entirely eliminated. 2. Assignable causes occur non-randomly in nature and can be reduced or eliminated (i.e., what we want to control).

WORKSHOP SIX DEVOTIONAL

For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12:14 (NIV) As managers and decision makers, we hold a great deal of responsibility. We should make the best of such opportunities, for once it slips away, another chance may not present itself in that manner again. The quality of our character will show in the quality of the decisions we make: whether to produce a good or service. Even when the President or CEO of the institution that employs us does not see our intentions immediately, remember, God sees us all, all the time! Question: How often do we pray for our leaders in government and at work for Gods guidance when they take decisions about the goods and services we consume or about the issues that affect our welfare?
