OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to: 1. Define and differentiate complex and compound sentences; 2. Explains the importance of familiarization with conjunctions; and 3. Write complex and compound sentences II. III. PROCEDURE A. Motivation The teacher will group the students into three. After the groupings, the teacher will show a picture of a bridge connecting a place from one place. She will ask the students what they see in the picture. After that, the students will discuss to their groups the meaning or their own understanding of the picture shown. The leader will then present what they have discussed. B. Presentation The teacher will then post to the board the following sentences: 1. All nations interact with one another. They get to know various cultural practices. (All nations interact with one another; consequently, get to know various cultural practices.)

2. Interconnectedness orients you to some cultural practices. These cultural practices are strange. (Interconnectedness orients you to some cultural practices that are strange). She will then ask the students how they can relate the following sentences to the bridge shown. After the discussion, the teacher will now ask the students if they could guess that their lesson for the day is consists of complex and compound sentences and conjunctions. C. Discussion Based from the sentences given, the teacher will ask the students the following questions: What did you do with the two sentences in one set? How did you connect the two? What kind of sentences results from connecting two sentences into one? Differentiate a dependent from an independent clause.

After the deliberation, the teacher will give another example:

They wanted to go to Italy, because they wanted to see Venice. She will then explain the students what is a compound sentence. A compound sentence has two simple sentences, or independent clauses. The clauses are connected one of two ways: with a coordinator or coordinating conjunction, or with a semicolon. Another example for complex situation will be given: We visited the museum before it closed. She will then explain the students what is a complex sentence. A complex sentence is made from an independent clause and a dependent clause joined together. We visited the museum before it closed. (dependent clause: before it closed.) (independent clause: We visited the museum) Complex sentences are often formed by putting these words at the beginning of the dependent clause: as, as if, before, after, because, though, even though, while, when, whenever, if, during, as soon as, as long as, since, until, unless, where, and wherever.

The teacher will distribute hand outs of list of conjunctions that will be helpful in constructing compound and complex sentences. D. Generalization The teacher will ask the students what are the lessons they learned for the day and how important are the conjunctions. IV. EVALUATION

The teacher will ask the students to get a whole sheet of paper and answer the following: A. Form compound or complex sentences by connecting the words in A with those in B.
