Excellent FT/PT/PRN opportunities at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington DC .

Hours:
The Military Treatment Facility provides services 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
Contract employees shall be required to work eight 12 hour rotating shifts weekdays,
weekends, and holidays in a two week pay period. Employees will work no more than 12
hours in a 24-hour period, unless approval is coordinated in advance through the COR or
designated representative. Two 15 minute breaks are built into the shift times below. The
employee may not leave early if the thirty (30) minute break was not taken during the
shift.

Qualifications:
• Registered nurses shall posses an associate, diploma, baccalaureate and/or masters
degree in nursing and must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing from at
least one state or territory in the United States.

• All registered nurses shall possess a current, active, valid, unrestricted license in at least
one U.S. State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth, Territory, or jurisdiction. If a
contract employee fails to maintain the license in good standing, or allows it to lapse for
any reason, the contract employee will be prohibited from practicing until proof is
presented for that puts the contract employee into good standing. The contractor is
responsible for backfill of all those that are scheduled but unable to work due to expired
credentials.

• All contract employees shall have and maintain current Basic Life Support for Healthcare
Providers (BLS) training by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
utilizing hands on training.

• Competency or self-assessment skills checklists or testing will be forwarded from the


contractor to the COR for proof of skill in a particular specialty prior to hire as part of the
pre-employment packet.

Experience:

• All Registered Nurses (RN) shall have a minimum of one year experience in the
respective licensed profession.

• Medical/Surgical nurses for the inpatient setting and some specialty areas such as
gastroenterology, a minimum of one year within the last three years of medical/surgical or
specialty clinical experience in a hospital setting, long term facility or other acute
care/related specialty setting

Specific tasks for all Registered Nurses

The skills/knowledge/tasks listed in the attachment apply to all nurses, as well as to the specific
nursing specialties indicated. Contract employee nurse practices/productivity will be compared to
that of other employees assigned to the same medical center. The contract nurses shall attend
and participate in: patient nursing reports, patient care conferences, team/unit/clinic conferences,
discharge planning, and staff conferences as deemed appropriate by MTF.

Knowledge of interpersonal relationships and the ability to maintain composure and react
appropriately while relating to patients, families and other staff members; to manage distraught,
irritable, unreasonable or angry individuals; and to maintain positive rapport with all individuals
involved in patient care.
Ability to react with alertness and skill in any emergency situation, i.e., cardiac or respiratory
arrest, hemorrhage, shock, severe physical trauma and psychiatric reaction. Be able to initiate life
saving measures in the absence of a physician.

May serve as member of resuscitation team or emergency code team.

Possess knowledge of the pharmacology of most commonly used emergency drugs, anticipated
results, usual dosages, and their location on crash cart.

Operate defibrillator, EKG machine and cardiac monitor when appropriate.

Assess patients' condition for potential or life-threatening crises. Distinguish between normal and
abnormal physical findings (from physical assessment and vital sign assessment). Plan and
implement appropriate nursing care.

Utilize the nursing process to develop individualized age-specific nursing care plans. The nursing
process includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. LPN shall not make
assessments but will implement the care plan and document the care provided with results.

Obtain patient medical and psychosocial history and pertinent family history and documents on
the appropriate form.

Implement prescribed physician orders and nursing care and documents in patient medical
record.

Assess patient/family knowledge level and learning needs (prescribed medications/therapies and
surgical/diagnostic procedures, disease process, preventions) develop and implement a plan of
instruction for the patient and family, then document the demonstrated level of understanding.
LPN shall not assess learning needs but will implement the educational plan and document the
results. Assessment plans will be individualized to target age-specific learning needs, barriers to
learning, and cultural needs.

Administer medications with the knowledge of actions and usual dosages of commonly used
drugs. For RN only: Anti-cancer chemotherapy drugs are excluded unless the contractor
employee has obtained education in cancer chemotherapeutic drugs and administration. LPN
shall not administer IV push medications or chemotherapy drugs. All licensed contract employee
will document patient response to PRN medications.

Give inhalation therapy treatments, with knowledge of medications utilized in this treatment and
document response to treatment.

RN will start and administer blood product transfusions and be knowledgeable about adverse
reactions and institute appropriate measures in the case of adverse reactions, and document
patient response to transfusions.

Manage and ensure proper procedures are followed with the tissue/skin bank and blood bank.

Interpret pertinent lab values, notify physician of abnormalities.

Transcribe or verify transcription of physician orders.

Communicate pertinent patient data to charge nurse and/or physician as appropriate.

Identify impending or existing emotional or psychiatric crisis and provide appropriate intervention.
Safely uses electronic thermometers, infusion pumps and Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
pumps, air mattresses, anti-embolism pumps. Immediately pulls from service any equipment with
frayed electric cords or that malfunctions and reports to first line supervisor.

Participate in discharge planning as appropriate and convenes multidisciplinary patient care


conferences to address complex medical/nursing care needs.

Respond to telephone inquiries regarding clinic services and/or follow-up ancillary reports.

Perform, assist and set up the patient for procedures, i.e., enemas, IV dressing changes,
suctioning, blood draw, EKG, obtain vital signs within scope of practice

Care for a wide multiple range of patients with medical-surgical diseases conditions.

Care for patients with peripheral inserted central Broviac, Port-a-Cath, or Hickman catheters, and
PIC lines to include dressing changes, blood drawing, and administration of drugs.

Provide nursing care and monitoring of patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy
depending on ward assigned.

Provide nursing care and monitoring of patients admitted to the telemetry wards. Recognize
arrhythmias and respond with appropriate interventions.
