Intel Pentium 4 processor family

Intel Pentium 4 microprocessors were based on completely new NetBurst microarchitecture, that differed significantly from P6 micro-architecture used in Pentium II/Pentium III microprocessor families. One of key features of Pentium 4 processor was Hyper-Pipelined Technology - 20-stage pipeline, that was two times longer than in previous generation of Pentium processors. While longer pipelines are less efficient than shorter ones, they allow the CPU to reach higher frequencies, and thus increase CPU performance. To improve efficiency of very deep pipeline the Pentium 4 processors included many other features: Trace Execution Cache, Advanced Transfer Cache, Enhanced Branch prediction, Quad Data Rate bus and Hyper-Threading technology. When first released the Pentium 4 architecture included 144 new SIMD instructions called SSE2. Later versions of Pentium 4 processors also included SSE3 instruction set and full set of 64-bit instructions (EM64T).

Socket 478 (mPGA478B) is a Pin Grid Array (PGA) socket for microprocessors based on Intel NetBurst architecture. This socket was introduced in August 2001 as replacement for short-lived socket 423. The socket 478 supports desktop and mobile Pentium 4 and Celeron processors from 1.4 GHz to 3.46 GHz with effective front-side bus frequencies 400 MHz - 1066 MHz (100 MHz - 266 MHz QDR). This socket was phased out in favour of socket 775 (LGA775).

One major difference between the socket 478 and older sockets is the socket size. The distance between pin holes in socket 478 is twice smaller than the distance between pin holes in the socket 370, which was used by older Celeron, Pentium and Pentium III families, and in the socket 423 used by first generation of Pentium 4 microprocessors. This results in much smaller socket size - only 1.38" x 1.38" (3.5 cm x 3.5 cm). Another difference between socket 478 and earlier sockets is the arrangement of pins. Pentium and newer CPUs, including socket 423 Pentium 4 microprocessors, had pins arranged as two grids where one grid was diagonally shifted relative to another grid by 1/2 of the distance between pins. In mPGA478B the pins are arranged as one grid, that is the same way as in Intel 80486 and older microprocessors. The mPGA478B has grid size 26 x 26 with a 14 x 14 section removed from the center of the grid. Two pin-holes in one corner of the socket are plugged, so there is only one way to install the CPU. The total number of pins is (26 x 26) - (14 x 14) - 2 = 478.

Upgrading socket 478 motherboards

Even though there are many Pentium 4 and Celeron CPUs that will fit into your motherboard, not all of them may be supported by the board. To determine the fastest processor you can upgrade to you'll need to:

Determine manufacturer and model of your motherboard, Search on manufacturer's website for the motherboard model.

To determine upgrade options for brand name computers (like Dell or HP) try to search for computer model on computer manufacturer website. For upgrade information for ASUS, DFI, ECS, Gigabyte Technology, Jetway, MSI and PC Chips motherboards please check CPU-Upgrade motherboard database.

Processor Installation
For processor installation instructions please look at your motherboard manual, or download installation instructions for boxed Intel Pentium 4 microprocessors from Intel website. Important notes about Pentium 4 CPU installation:

When you handle the processor avoid touching the pins. During CPU installation allow the processor to drop into the socket - do not try to force it into the socket! Pentium 4/Celeron CPUs in micro FC-PGA2 package have more delicate pins than older package types, if you try to force it you can easily bend the pins.

Intel 865 Mainboards Roundup: Part 1

After the Pentium 4 line with FSB 800 MHz was announced we looked over all chipsets offered by Intel for the new processors. But there are no chipsets we would unconditionally recommend you. The i875P (Canterwood) is certainly faster than its dual-channel brothers of the i865 family (Springdale) but its release price is noticeably higher, and the layout is much more complicated. Moreover, the mobo makers willingly believed Intel that the i875P should be positioned for the top desktop systems and even entry-level workstations, and equipped their Canterwood based models with a great deal of peripheral controllers, good accessory packs and stuck an impressive pricetags. The boards look good but too expensive. The i865PE chipset (or i865G with an integrated video core) looks a good alternative to its elder sibling. It's not much slower, has the same functionality (except the ECC memory support) and provides a lower cost of finished solutions. But the performance level of typical i865PE based boards is comparable to the fast i845PE based levels which are officially announced for operation with the FSB 800 MHz and DDR400. The i845PE is deprived of some features of the new generation, but it's possible to integrate external controllers to redeem the downsides of the functionality. The dualchannel memory can't be supported, but end-users value the speed rather than marketing terms. If you remember, the dual-channel SiS655 released half a year ago hardly outscored the dated single-channel SiS648, and if the latter correctly supported the Hyper Threading, the new SiS chipset would have much more somber prospects. What caused such effect if the theoretical throughput of two memory channels is twice higher than that of a single channel, and the wide FSB of the Pentium 4 is eagerly looking for an adequate memory acceleration? The problem is that it's much more difficult to maintain stability at high frequencies, that is why the data path from the CPU to the memory has to be made longer (buffered). The memory access latency of the SiS655 and i865PE is too great making the dual-channel memory much less attractive. But Intel affirms that the Canterwood (which is principally equivalent to the Springdale) has a lower latency (thanks to the PAT), but only selected i875P dies have the required stability. However, there is an alternative consistent explanation of the reality: the performance of the i875P is normal, while the i865 series is allegedly slowed down to raise the sales of more expensive Canterwood based boards. (The only thing left to do is to find a reason to accuse SiS of, because it doesn't have yet an elite dual-channel chipset.) The i875P is faster in the normal conditions than the i865PE, but the latter has hidden reserves, namely the internal acceleration mode. Some i865x based boards need just a new BIOS version (if the manufacturer offers such). This is actually a semiofficial overclocking of the chipset which lets you use the i865 to get a speed of the more expensive model. Now if we compare the accelerated i865PE and the i845PE with the FSB speed of 800 MHz, we will see that the former gets a decent performance gain added to its nice functionality, and becomes thus a good purchase. In the next part of the Springdale based mainboards roundup we will touch upon several models where the PAT can be turned on as described above, and today we test

the ABIT (on i845PE), DFI, EPoX and Soltek (on i865) boards that illustrate the current situation, and a specially invited star - ASUS P4P800 Deluxe. :)

This is a typical budget board that realizes the chipset's minimal functionality. Accessories:

The board's width causes some downsides in the PCB's layout: the IDE connectors are behind the PCI slots, and the audio ones are in front of them. A video card inserted may lock memory modules. Also, it can be difficult to reach some jumpers when the board is already installed. Their description is provided on the PCB. The 3-phase switching voltage regulator incorporates 12 capacitors of 1500 uF. There are also voltage regulators of the AGP bus (2 capacitors of 1000 uF and several less capacious) and of the memory (2 of 1000 uF). Integrated controllers:

audio controller based on the chipset and C-Media CMI9739A AC'97 codec; 5.1 audio system supported, front audio outputs and S/PDIF connectors provided; network controller based on the Realtek RTL8101L chip supporting 10/100Base-T (Fast Ethernet).

+2.5 V supplied to the memory modules in the StandBy mode is indicated with the red LED. A connector for the second COM port wasn't integrated though the space for it is left. System monitoring is supported by Winbond W83627HF-AW chip. It controls:

We used the BIOS of 31.03.03 as the latest available version. This board can't boast of its functionality or overclocking capabilities, but its speed is equal to most its competitors, and the price is promised to be low.
