Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Isaiah 55:1-9, 1 Corinthians 10:1-13, Luke 13:1-9 March 3, 2013 Lent 3 In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Lent. Lent is the six-week portion of our church calendar when we, as Christians, reflect and prepare ourselves for Easter Sunday. During Lent, we take time to intentionally reflect upon our faith journeys and where we have been faithful,or not so faithful, to how God calls us to live. We are halfway through Lent, so, How is it going for you?How are you preparing your hearts, minds, and souls this Lenten season to receive again the gift of Gods love and grace through the resurrected Christ? If you are like me, you might need help in guiding your reflection and preparation. This mornings gospel lesson invites us to consider the depth of Gods love and grace for us. This morning we hear Jesus striking proclamation to a large crowd, and a parable about a fig tree. The parable invites us to consider Gods grace, while also hearing Jesus clear proclamation that bad things dont happen just because of guilt or sin. And it is this portion of the gospel lesson that Id like to invite us to reflect on. The Roman government was in the business of executing Galileans.The Bible doesnt say how many, but Jesus is clear that they were murdered not because they were sinners.18 people died when a tower collapsed. Jesus is clear that this happened not because they were guilty of any crime. These were not acts of judgment on Gods part. I wonder about the suffering and pain in our world today. I wonder if Mexico has been struck by devastating drug violence, claiming the lives of over 11,000 people,because its people are sinful. I wonder ifmore than 30 people died in the explosion at the Pemex building because they were guilty of some crime.

Then there are the more personal situations that I wonder about. I wonder if you, or people you know, find yourselves struggling with chronic illnesses, or unemployment, or constantly fighting addiction, because somehow you, or the people you know,have sinned more than others. I wonder, but then hear Jesusemphatic, No! These tragedies and sufferings and challengesdonthappen because of guilt or sin.I dont know why some people are struck with illness, or tragedy, or addiction, and others are not. I do know that when we witness acts of violence and hatred against our fellow human beings, rather than answering No! as Jesus did, in our minds and hearts weoften answer, Yes.Sometimes it is easier for us to believe that somehow bad things to bad people. Its easier to believe that somehow disaster and suffering is Gods way of punishing the guilty or sinner. And it is herethat the gospel invites us to reflect upon our faith journey.It is in this space, with Jesus emphatic No! ringing in our ears, that we can reflect upon howwe too often say, Yes. It is in this space that we can prepare ourselves, as individuals and as a community,to reflect and toreceive Gods love through Jesus Christ. We need to spend timein active reflection, but we cant stop there.God is constantly calling us to recognize our sin, move beyond our guilt, and consider how we can join with Jesus and emphatically proclaim, No! Lets consider how we, as a church, can proclaim the healing and life-giving good news that our God of Graceloves us, and the whole world, without distinction or reservation. Amen.

Rev. LukeRske-Metcalfe La Iglesia Luterana del Buen Pastor Isaas 55:1-9, 1 Corintios 10:1-13, San Lucas 13:1-9 03 de marzo 2013 - Cuaresma 3 En el nombre del Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amn. Cuaresma. La Cuaresma es la porcin de seis semanas de nuestro calendario de la iglesia cuando nosotros, como cristianos, reflexionamos y nos preparamos para el domingo de Pascua. Durante la Cuaresma, nos tomamos tiempo para intencionalmente reflexionar sobre nuestra jornada de fe y en donde hemos sido fieles, o no tan fieles, a como Dios nos llama a vivir. Estamos a mitad del camino de la Cuaresma, por lo que, "Cmo va todo para usted?" Cmo estn preparando vuestros corazones, mentes y almas en esta temporada de Cuaresma para recibir - de nuevo - el don del amor de Dios y la gracia por medio de la resurreccin de Cristo? Si usted es como yo, usted podra necesitar ayuda para guiar su reflexin y preparacin. La lectura del Evangelio de esta maana nos invita a considerar la profundidad del amor de Dios y la gracia para nosotros. Esta maana escuchamos la sorprendente proclamacin de Jess a una gran multitud, y una parbola sobre una higuera. La parbola nos invita a considerar la gracia de Dios, al mismo tiempo or clara proclamacin de Jess de que las cosas malas no ocurren slo por la culpa o el pecado. Y es esta parte de la leccin del Evangelio que me gustara invitarlos a reflexionar. El gobierno Romano estaba en el negocio de la ejecucin de Galileos. La Biblia no dice cuntos, pero Jess es claro que no fueron asesinados porque eran pecadores. 18 personas murieron cuando la torre se derrumb. Jess es claro que esto no sucedi porque ellos eran culpables de algn delito. No se trataba de actos de juicio de parte de Dios. Me pregunto sobre el sufrimiento y el dolor en nuestro mundo... hoy. Me pregunto si Mxico ha sido golpeado por la violencia del narcotrfico devastador, causando la muerte de ms de 11.000 personas, porque su gente es pecadora. Me pregunto si ms de 30 personas murieron en la explosin en el edificio de Pemex porque eran culpables de algn delito.

Entonces hay ms situacionespersonales acerca de las que me pregunto. Me pregunto si usted, o personas que usted conoce, os encontris luchando con enfermedades crnicas, o desempleo, o en constante lucha contra la adiccin, porque de alguna manera usted, o las personas que usted conoce, han pecado ms que otras. Me pregunto, pero luego escucho a Jess enftico: "No!" Estas tragedias y sufrimientos y problemas no suceden por culpa o pecado. No s por qu algunas personas son golpeadas por la enfermedad, o una tragedia, o la adiccin, y otras no lo son. Yo s que cuando somos testigos de actos de violencia y odio contra nuestros semejantes, en vez de responder "No" como lo hizo Jess, en nuestras mentes y corazones a menudo contestamos, "S." A veces es ms fcil para nosotros creer que de alguna manera las cosas malas a la gente mala. Es ms fcil creer que de alguna manera desastre y el sufrimiento es el camino de Dios de castigar al culpable o pecador. Y es aqu que el Evangelio nos invita a reflexionar sobre nuestra jornada de fe. Es en este espacio, con Jess enftico"No!" zumbando en nuestros odos, que podemos reflexionar sobre la forma en que demasiado a menudo dicen: "S." Es en este espacio donde podemos prepararnos, como individuos y como comunidad, para reflexionar y para recibir el amor de Dios a travs de Jesucristo. Tenemos que dedicar tiempo a la reflexin activa, pero no podemos detenernos ah. Dios constantemente nos llama a reconocer nuestro pecado, ir ms all de nuestra culpa, y considerar cmo podemos unirnos a Jess y proclamar enfticamente: "No!" Vamos a considerar cmo nosotros, como iglesia, podemos proclamar la curacin y vivificante buena noticiaque nuestro Dios de Gracia nos ama, y el mundo entero, sin distincin ni reservas. Amen.
