Unit 8: The Age of Total War (1914 C.E 1945 C.E)

The Story of the Unit
Imperialist conflicts over resources, nationalism, and economic crisis started two devastating conflicts during this period. World War I and World War II were the first total wars. Governments used ideologies, including fascism, nationalism, and communism, to mobilize all of their states resources, including people in both the home countries and colonies or former colonies, for the purpose of waging war. Governments also used propaganda to mobilize these populations. These conflicts caused death on an unprecedented scale. This led to a new awareness of human rights. Many groups opposed conflict. After these wars, many artists and writers showed disillusionment with war and modernity. The global economy went into a depression. Many states and groups turned to Fascism and Communism ideologies, or Socialist reforms, for answers. The wars end with a dramatically new global conflict a chastised Europe lays in ruins after War, while the United States and Soviet Union are ready to emerge as the new powers in a new global landscape one marred by the amazing power of the atom, leaving only devastation in its wake.
