Philosophy of Teaching Education has been an integral part of a childs development for many years.

From learning the basics of farming in the early days to actually learning arithmetic, reading and writing, a child is always learning. A teachers responsibility within a classroom is to do what he/she can to teach the students using everything that they know and of which they are aware. Methods and strategies used to teach children are now becoming more advanced and specific to every childs needs. Children learn at different rates, as well as, learning by using different learning strategies. It is up to educators to learn how to use the advanced strategies and methods to reach the students. Mrs. Rowland was my first grade teacher. 1st grade was instrumental in helping me to frame my own philosophy of teaching. She demonstrated how applying the theory of multiple intelligences was effective for meeting the needs of all students, and thusly, addressed my needs enough to help me decide that I wanted to be a teacher. The theory of Multiple Intelligences was developed by developmental Psychologist Howard Gardner. In 1983, Gardner wrote the book Frames of Mind; Theory of Multiple Intelligences. This theory is based on the idea that every human being learns in an amalgam of ways. In history, the primary method known to teaching and learning was lecturing and listening to a lecture while taking a few notes. Today, there are many different ways to teach and learn. Gardner identifies 8 different intelligences: Logical-Mathematical, Spatial, Linguistic, BodilyKinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal and Naturalistic. Each of these intelligences specifies a way a student is more inclined to learn. For the example I gave previously, I would be considered Bodily-Kinesthetic learner. Im more inclined to learn things by physically moving,

touching or experiencing. These intelligences can elevate teaching to a different level if effectively implemented. It is my responsibility as a teacher to learn my students strengths and weaknesses, and to make their strengths better and bring their weaknesses up to par. As a teacher, once I have gathered the necessary information, I should make sure my lessons and activities are taught effectively to each student. Although it will be difficult to address all 8 intelligences within one lesson, it is beneficial to address at least 2-3 within every lesson, to give a variety. For example, a 5th grade science teacher teaching a science lesson, using knowledge about my students interests can create a lesson around their interests that would cater to their needs giving them concrete examples to master the standard being taught. I believe that multiple intelligences can help a lot of teachers and students. There are many different forms of technology teachers can access to gain knowledge on particular students needs. It simply takes initiative and lots of effort. My major goal during my career is to ensure that I will do whatever is necessary to make learning effective, fun and easy for them. After all, if Mrs. Rowland hadnt done so, where would I be?
