US Postal Service Announces Plans for Derby Post Office

The Plan provides for a new Derby Post Office
The United States Postal Service announced that it is considering plans to sell the Derby Post Office building, located at 74 Olivia Street in Derby, Connecticut. The plan includes securing right-sized space for a new Derby Post Office which will continue to provide postal services to the community. The property was the subject of a study last year that found that delivery operations could feasibly be moved to a nearby postal facility in Shelton, allowing the Postal Service to sell the 12,000 square-foot building and to seek right-sized space for a new retail Post Office in Derby. This new facility would require approximately 1,100 square feet of space. Postal officials recently met with Derby Mayor Anthony Staffieri to inform the City of the plans and to reassure City officials, businesses and residents that if the building is sold that the Postal Service would retain a retail Post Office in Derby. If the building does not sell, no changes would be made. "The important piece of this is that the City of Derby, at the very least will have a new retail postal facility which will remain in Derby," said Mayor Staffieri In addition, this underutilized building can be sold for retail/commercial space and add to our tax base downtown, said the Mayor Postal Officials have asked to get on the agenda for Derbys March 28th public meeting at Derby City Hall to explain details of the plan to the city's residents and business owners. A self-supporting government agency, the Postal Service receives no tax dollars for its operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations. In order to sustain universal mail service to the American people, it is imperative that the Postal Service adjust its retail, delivery and mail processing networks to match Americas changing communication needs. Information concerning USPS properties presently for sale can be found at www.uspspropertiesforsale.com.
