Requirements for Conscientious Objectors in Component:

YET432 - Surgical Principles and Anawthesia

Those studentswho do not wish to participate in teachingclassesin the above comporrentwhere live animals
are used and then euthanasedat the end of the classbecausethe studentconscientiouslyobjects to the use of
and then euthanasiaof animals for teaching, must:

(i) Notify the Component Coordinator in writing as early as possible,preferably before fhe start of the
component and no later than the end of week 3 of the semesterthe component is offered, that he/sheis a
conscientiousobjector and does not wish to participate in the live animal anaesthesiaand surgery classes,

(ii) hesent a written statementexplaining how he/sheintends to meet the objectives listed in the Fourth Year
Veterinary StudentsGeneral Information Handout under the headings"'AnaesthesiaObjectives" and
"Surgery Objectives",

(iii) Along with the statement,specified in Item (ii) above, provide a letter addressedto the Component
Coordinator and signed by a registeredveterinaian stating that the veternaian will teachanaesfhesiaand
surgery skills to the studentto meet the respectiveobjectives,

(iv) On agreementby the Murdoch University anaesthesiaand surgery teachersthat the student can
undertakean alternativelearning pr@ess,provide to the ComponentCoordinator two reports each semester,
one by Week 7 and the secondby Week 13 of the semester,describing what had been achievedand the
anaestheticand surgical proceduresundertaken. The veterinarianwho taught and supervisedthe student
must also sign the reports to verify that the work was undertaken.

(v) After reading the reports and determining if fhe studenthas made sufficient progress,the Murdoch
University veterinary anaesthetistand surgeon(teachers)will discusswith the studentappropriate
anaestheticand surgical proceduresto be undertakenon specific animals brought to Murdoch University
Veterinary Hospital to demonstrateto the teachersthat he/shehas the required skills to meet the objectives.
A suitable time near the end of semesterone and two will be discussedwhen the studentshould perform the
anaestheticand surgical procedures.

(vi) Anange for young healthy dogs or catsrequiring desexingor other simple surgery to be brought to
Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital for generalanaesthesiaand routine surgery. At least one surgery
casefor each studentwill be an ovariohysterectomyin a dog. The anaestheticand surgical protocols used
will be those taught at Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital. Upon recovery from anaesthesiathe student
will provide the necessarypostoperativenursing and care of the animal and retum it to its home. All drugs
and suture materials will be provided by Murdoch University.

(vii) Anange for other studentsto assist, For all anaesthetisedanimals scheduledfor surgery there musf be a
minimum of two students,one shall be the surgeonand the secondshall be the anaesthetist.The surgery
student must arrange the student to undertake the anaesthesia,a role that can be fulfllled by another person
who is a conscientiousobjector. If there are two or more shrdentswho are conscientiousobjectors, all
studentswill presentat the one time with the animals for anaesthesiaand surgery. Surgery studentsshould
arrangea surgicalassistant.

(viii) Attend the scheduledanaesthesia/ surgery practical classesas timetabled to observeother students
performing anaesthesiaand surgery. Attendance is compulsory and studentsare required for the full
durafion of the class. Attendanceis also compulsory at all other practical classeswhere live animals are not
used.

(ix) Satisfactorily write up in their practical book the proceduresundertaken,that is, as an anaesthetistand as
a surgeon,and submit it for assessment by the requireddates.
