PUMaC/HMMT Tryout Test

Directions: You have two hours to complete this test, and no calculators or other aids may be used. The problems are intended to be challenging, even for the best students, so do not be discouraged if you cant solve many of them. In fact, we do not expect test-takers to be able to solve all of the problems within the time constraints: this test is also designed to be a learning experience! All we ask is that you give each problem your best eort. Be sure to write your answers on the provided answer sheet. Good luck, and have fun!

(2 Points Each)
A-1: A polynomial P (x) with integer coecients has the property that P (P (x)) = 9x + 14 for all x. Find all possible values of P (1). C-1: Six equally spaced points A, B, C, D, E, F are marked on the boundary of a circular table and the ve chords AB, AC, AD, AE, and AF are drawn. Two new points X and Y are now randomly chosen from the circumference of the table and chord XY is drawn. Find the probability that XY intersects exactly two of the previously drawn chords. G-1: Consider equilateral triangle ABC. A point P on side AC is chosen and BP is extended to point D such that BAD = 90 . If AP = 2 and P C = 1, nd BD. NT-1: Find all prime numbers p such that p2 + 2p 3 is also a prime number.

A-2: Let a and b be complex numbers satisfying the following system of equations: (a + b)(a2 + b2 ) = 24 (a2 + b2 )(a3 + b3 ) = 24 (a3 + b3 )(a4 + b4 ) = 56 Determine the maximum possible value of ab. C-2: For a positive integer n, s3 (n) denotes the sum of the digits of n when n is expressed in base
728

3. Find
k=1

s3 (k).

G-2: Consider cube ABCDA B C D where ABCD and A B C D are faces of the cube and AA , BB , CC , DD are edges. Let M , N be the midpoints of CD, DD respectively; let O, P be the midpoints of C D , C C respectively. Planes M N B and OP A meet at an acute dihedral angle of . Find cos . NT-2: Find the number of positive integers n 2012 for which there exists a positive integer m such that lcm(m, n) + 2m = m gcd(m, n)

A-3: Suppose all lines in the family 1 a (where a is a nonzero real number) are graphed on the Cartesian plane. Let R be the region that is composed of all of the points lying on at least one of these lines. Now, consider the circle (x 5)2 + y 2 = 16. There are exactly two points on this circle that lie in R; nd these two points. y = ax + C-3: Artyom the Ant is standing on the leftmost key of a piano with eleven keys. Every second, he jumps either one key to the right, two keys to the right, one key to the left, or two keys to the left. Assuming he never jumps o of the piano and falls to his doom, in how many ways can he traverse the entire piano in eleven seconds, hitting each key exactly once? G-3: Triangle ABC has AB = 11, BC = 8, and AC = 9. The midpoint of side AB is M and the angle bisectors of CM A and CM B meet sides AC and BC at P and Q respectively. Determine the length P Q. NT-3: Let S denote the set of all prime numbers p satisfying the following property: there exists no positive odd integer a such that a2 2a + 5 is divisible by p. Find the sixth smallest element of S.

C-4: Baron Bradley is playing a factor game. For every positive integer k between 2 and 2012 inclusive, he randomly chooses a factor of k. He then adds up all of these individual randomly chosen factors. Determine the probability that this nal sum is divisible by 8. G-4: Consider ABC with a point D on side BC, denoting the incircle of ABD as 1 and the incircle of ACD as 2 . 1 and 2 touch side BC at points X and Y respectively. Given that the reection of 2 over AD is externally tangent to 1 , determine all possible values for the ratio DX . DY NT-4: Find the sum of all positive rational numbers a 100 such that {a2 } + {a} = 0.99, where {a} denotes the fractional part of a.
