Radiation Protection Services

Leak/Wipe Test
Leak testing of sealed radiation sources is required and sanctioned by the Radiation Protection Authority of Saudi Arabia (King Abdulaziz City of Science and Technology) (Kacst) as well as International rules and regulations. The leak/wipe test results provide information to the owner of source and KACST whether if a tested sealed source has leakage, contaminations, or exceeding the international leakage criterion of 185 Bq. Organizations which use sealed radiation sources are required by the law to perform regular leak tests in order to verify that their sources are compliant and not leaking radioactive materials. This testing is a requirement for all industrial radiography sources, nuclear gauges and other devices containing closed radioactive sources.

SPSS is licensed by (KACST) to conduct leak/wipe testing services for gamma, beta and alpha radioactive sources. Collected samples are tested and depending upon its measured level of activity a confirmation certificate or failure report is issued for the record.

Radiation Surveys
KACST requires that radiation surveys, routine and as per need, to be conducted on all radiation sources whether stationary or portable devices such as nuclear gauges and x-ray machines, existing in a work place (hospital or industry) and environment. The identification, quantification and shielding assessment of a radiation hazard is essential in the development of procedures to handle, contain or manage the hazard. Information obtained can be used to compare with limits set by KACST and Ministry of Health.

SPSS is well equipped to conduct radiation surveys in diverse situations around radiation sources in industry and hospitals. A comprehensive and well detailed report with recommendation is issued after the survey, measurements performed and results obtained.

NORM SERVICES
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) exists with variable degrees in the environment depending on location. NORM may be found in oil, gas, and water production facilities as it accumulates during the drilling and processing of crude oil, natural gas well water, and inside pipes, tanks and around the valves. Accumulated NORM may produce radioactive scale inside the pipe (a residue left in pipe from drilling oil wells) and Radioactive (RA) sludge causing the sites and equipment to be contaminated. Industrial waste such as radioactive sludge and radioactive scale are example of products that may contain NORM.

Radiation Safety Services in Hospitals

In most hospitals and clinics radiation is used for several purposes such as Diagnostic X-ray, CT, Dental Xray, Panoramic X-ray and radiation therapy. KACST & Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia require that radiation shielding assessment and surveys to be performed in all hospitals around the X-ray rooms, CT Scanners rooms, Dental X-ray units, Panoramic X-ray units and Nuclear medicine units using radiopharmaceutical sources.

SPSS services varies in the form of:

Room design, Shielding and Personal Dosimetry. Radiation survey of Instruments Producing Radiation in hospitals. Radiation surveys ensure that exposure levels for both the operator and public are within the acceptable limits. Training of medical staff (clinical technologist, medical students and practitioners) in theoretical and practical aspects of radiation protection. Radiation Protection Training Services (RSOs & RWs)

SPSS is licensed by KACST to offer comprehensive training courses for Radiation Safety Officers (RSOs) in preparing RSO candidates for the RSO KACST qualification exam. SPSS is also licensed to offer training to Radiation Workers (RWs). The content of the courses vary from basic radiation awareness session (as for RWs) to more complex RSOs courses. These courses are designed to provide the candidates with the needed knowledge to work and safely handle radioactive sources. Courses can be held either at the SPSS location or at the clients site. The RSOs courses (45hrs.) prepare the candidates for the RSO KACST exam and help to acquire the RSOs license. Practical Training sessions are included. Every installations using radiation practice license such as; nuclear gauges, nuclear medicine, industrial radiography and safe transportation of sources need one or more RSOs. While the RWs short course (usually 24hrs.) is a 3 day intensive course that combines plenary lectures, tutorials and practical sessions to train the attendees in industrial radiography, nuclear gauges or x-ray technicians in the important aspects of radiation safety in industry. RW training is one of KACST requirement for radiation Practice License application.
All courses are offered either in ARABIC or ENGLISH languages as per the clients request.

Calibration Services
SPSS offers a unique calibration service for client radiation survey meters. Calibrations are made at a national laboratory certified and approved by KACST. This service is convenient, time saving and more efficient for all clients especially in Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

The Calibration Process

Interested companies wish to calibrate their survey meters through SPSS need to submit their survey meters at head office during week days. SPSS returns them back calibrated within 1week from the first Saturday following the submittal. Each survey meter will be returned to the client with calibration certificate issued from the licensed certified calibration laboratory. Calibration for TRACERCO survey meters can be arranged to be done by SPSS outside the country as per clients wishes.

Personal Dosimetry Services (Thermo Luminescent Dosimeters- TLD)

Personal radiation dosimetry is required for radiation workers and RSOs who are suspected to be exposed above 30% of the annual dose limit (as per KACST regulation) SPSS provide routine personal dosimetry services and supply the needed TLD and analysis as per KACST regulations.

Safe Radioactive Sources Transportation Services

Many types of Radioactive Packages containing variable quantities of radioactive material are used in industrial and medical facilities. For example Oil and Gas industry use radioactive sources, industrial radiography, NDT inspection, nuclear gauges such as level gauges, thickness gauges, density gauges, alloy analyzer, multi phase flow meter (MPFMs) and well logging sources used in exploration and producing. The import, export, use, storage and monitoring of radiation sources are regulated in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and KACST. Transportation of such sources without necessary approval/permit from the authorities is serious offense and may be liable for penalties/fines as per the applicable rules. The national regulations prescribe limits and rules of radioactive packages that can be transported. SPSS is licensed by KACST and equipped to conduct radioactive transportation services in the Kingdom. RSOs, drivers & technicians are trained and well qualified to fulfill the national requirements for the safe transportation of radioactive material within the kingdom. In addition to transportation, SPSS provide service for; Process application for Import / Re-Export of radioactive sources. Airport custom clearance and packages.

Radiation Protection Consultation

The following are some examples of various types of consultation services SPSS offers. SPSS is available to discuss any other services that may interest the client and can tailor services to meet the specific needs.
Prepare application clients radiation practice license (RPL) to KACST and develop supporting documentation.

Evaluate client compliance with the national / international radiation protection regulations. Perform radiation risk assessment for workers, public and the environment. Prepare specific radiation protection procedures and/or manuals tailored to meet the client needs. Provide expert advice and primary consultation in radiation protection matters.
