IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT

1987-93 Fuel Injected Vehicles 1. Confirm the following prior to checking or adjusting the idle speed. a. Check that the lead wires and hoses of the engine emission control system are connected correctly. b. Check that the accelerator cable has 0.12-0.20 in. (3-5 mm) free-play when engine is at operating temperature. c. Check that the ignition timing is within specification. 2. Place automatic transaxle gear shift lever in P position or manual transaxle gear shift lever in NEUTRAL position and set parking brake. 3. Ensure that the lights, heater fan, rear defogger, cooling fan and air conditioner are OFF. 4. Ensure that air cleaner is installed correctly. 5. Connect a tachometer according to the manufacturer's instructions. 6. Remove cover on idle speed adjusting screw. 7. Start engine and warm engine to normal operating temperature. 8. Install a spare fuse into the DIAG SW connector in the fuse block under the left side of the dash. 9. Check and adjust idle speed to specification. Turn idle speed screw in to decrease idle and out to increase idle. 10. If equipped with air conditioning, check and adjust the air conditioner idle speed vacuum solenoid valve. 11. With idle speed correct, turn air conditioner ON. 12. Check that engine idle is within specification or slightly higher. If not, adjust air conditioner vacuum solenoid valve adjusting screw to obtain correct idle. 13. Turn air conditioner OFF and check that idle speed is within specifications. On some vehicles, a slightly higher idle setting on the vacuum solenoid valve may be needed to maintain proper idle characteristics with the air conditioning system operating. 14. After adjusting idle speed remove the spare fuse from the connector.

IGNITION TIMING
CONVENTIONAL SPARK CONTROL IGNITION 1. Start and run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Stop the engine. 2. Connect a tachometer to the negative terminal of the ignition coil. Connect a timing light to the No. 1 spark plug wire. Refer to the underhood sticker. 3. Check and/or adjust the idle speed to specification. 4. Disconnect the vacuum line at the intake manifold gas filter and plug the gas filter. 5. Aim the timing light at the timing marks and check the timing. 6. To adjust the ignition timing, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and rotate the distributor until the correct timing marks are aligned. 7. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and recheck the timing. 8. Reconnect the vacuum line at the gas filter. The timing should advance. If not, check for a vacuum leak or check the vacuum centrifugal advance mechanism for proper operation. ELECTRONIC SPARK CONTROL (ESC) IGNITION See Figures 2 and 3 1.

4. On vehicles equipped with the electronic spark control (ESC) ignition, remove the diagnostic check connector, located next to the ignition coil, and insert a fused jumper wire between appropriate terminals. a. With a 4 terminal connector, hold the connector with the locking tab at the top and jumper the lower two terminals (C and D). b. With a 6 terminal connector, hold the connector with the locking tab at the top and jumper the two terminals at the lower left (D and E). 8. Remove the diagnostic check connector jumper. Remove the timing light and tachometer.

TPS Adjustment

Fig. 1: Throttle position sensor testing 1. Connect a digital multimeter to the throttle position sensor terminals 1 and 2. Measure resistance. 2. Insert a 0.012 in. (0.3mm) feeler gauge between throttle stop screw and throttle lever. 3. With retaining screws loosely installed, turn throttle position sensor fully clockwise, then slowly counterclockwise until digital multimeter indicates 0 ohms (continuity). 4. Tighten screws to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm). 5. Insert a 0.035 in. (0.9mm) feeler gauge between throttle stop screw and throttle lever. Digital multimeter should now indicate an open circuit (no continuity).
