ANCIENT ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE OF THE NORTHERN MASONIC JURISDICTION DECEMBER-FEBRUARY 2013

Seasons Greetings from the Valley!

The Valley Survived Super Storm Sandy

It sure felt like the Mayans were right for a moment and the world was about to end here on Long Island when Super Storm Sandy hit us. But by the grace of the Great Architect, we survived with only minimal damage. A few of our functions had to be rescheduled and some of our everyday activities, like getting the newsletter out in time, fell behind to the task of helping restore normality. The Valley was very lucky. However, many parts of Long Island were not so lucky. Due to the fact the Valley was still had power and heat, it became a safe haven for some of our members. This helped those without power, but not those who experienced total devastation. Some of our members lost everything. It was during this dark and sad time I was able to see the true character of our fraternity and experience one of my See Valley Survived on pg. 5

From the Secretarys Desk:

As 2012 rumbles to a distinguished finale, we in the Metropolitan and Long Island areas are still in a sense of numbness from the destructive Sandy and the Noreaster that followed. Almost all of us were affected at one time or another either by power failure, transportation disruption, or partial or complete destruction of our homes, cars and personal property. Many of our Brother Masons were among those emotionally and financially affected. The cry for help came from all directions, and immediately the Grand Lodge of NY and the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite NMJ Sprung into action. Masonic Brothers, Scottish Rite or no, were contacted by way of our rosters and locations. Financial support was given to them immediately to help ease their tragic circumstances. Masonry went into full swing and it brought a tear to ones eyes to see the good. The building remained intact and the damage was minimal and covered by insurance. Rockville Centre has its own electricity plant, so our building was lighted and had heat. I think that by the time you get this newsletter, some things will be back to normal and it will be a while for others. Unfortunately several functions were cancelled in the building, and our Putun on the Ritz dance has had to be postponed until April 2013. Further notice will be sent. The December 6th meeting will be open and go on as our Family Life Night and Holiday Party. If you cant make the See Secretarys Desk on pg. 8

Messages from the Valley Officers

Thrice Potent Master:
First, I would ask that we pray for all of the victims of hurricane Sandy. If any brother needs assistance please contact: Ill:. Steve Stefanakos 33, the CIC Richard Frenz 32, or myself. Next, I would like to thank everyone for their hard work putting on the Feast of Tishri and the 4th degree. From all responses that I have received it was enjoyed by all, especially the new candidates. I would especially like to thank Bro. Golecki 32 for his guidance and work as director. As his usual, he did an outstanding job and I thank him. There are too many others to name but you know who you are and I thank you also. The following is an updated schedule of 5 rehearsal dates for the 14th degree, which will take place on Jan. 3rd, 2013. All are Sundays and will start at 7:00pm: 11/25, 12/2, 12/9, 12/16 and 12/30. Thank you and have a safe holiday season.
My Brothers, I was extremely proud to be part of Family Life with you last Thursday. I want to thank Ill. Donald Halstead for pulling it off as usual and also shout out congratulations to the recipients, Ill. Linton Smith and Robert Getschel and MSA Jeff Golecki. The Council of Princes rehearsal will start right after the holidays. As we enter into the festivities of the season with our families, let's not forget the tragedies of last month and be grateful for the things that we take for granted. Life is fragile and it only takes a moment to realize you never know what you have until you lose it. May God keep you, your families and friends safe for the New Year.

Commander in Chief:
This is the time of year when I would be wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season which I certainly do. However, the devastation that has been so wide spread in our Metropolitan area after the horrendous storm, Sandy, has left a pall on what this season usually brings too many. There have been so many of our brothers and their families that have been displaced from their homes or are living without heat and/or electric due to homes being gutted and rebuilt so they may get electric back to their homes, that it is incomprehensible. If ever there was a time to aid and assist brothers in a destitute situation, this is it. We need to bring the Holiday spirit to many. Our Supreme Council of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction through the Almoners Fund has sent relief to our area to all masons here not just Scottish Rite who suffered extreme losses. In addition the Grand Lodge of New York has created a special relief fund to assist through the Brotherhood Fund. I cannot stress enough to our brothers the need to See Commander in Chief on pg. 8

Valley News
Family Life Night and holiday party well received
Once again our Family Life night went off famously due to the tireless efforts of our Hospitaler Don Halstead. We opened the evening with a lovely catered dinner to fill our bellies before proceeding upstairs for the nights events. The program opened with the presentation of Ill. Linton Smith and Ill. Robert M. Getschel with their 33rd Degree hat and jewel and with the presentation to Dist. Brother Jeffrey Golecki of his M.S.A. hat and jewel. After that, there were the presentations of donations to the Long Island charities, which also included the Hospital Transportation Unit from Kismet Shrine. The evening was wrapped up with the wonderful sounds of the Sweet Adelines before retiring downstairs for dessert and coffee. A good time was had by all.

Knights of the Double Eagle step up

The KDE would like to once again thank the anonymous donors that gave the swords to the Inaugural class. It was a true act of brotherhood and is well appreciated. It was good to see these swords put to use in our first sword arch in a long time. We were honored to give an arch of steel to the Ill:. Peter J. Samiec 33,Deputy For New York, as he was presented to the Valley to witness our fourth degree and induction of our new members to the Valley and Lodge of Perfection. Well done Knights.

Upcoming degrees reminder

We just want to remind not only our new members, but all members of the Valley that we will be hosting the following reunions. In January, we will be showing the 4th DVD and performing the 14th degree. In February, we will be performing the 15th and 18th degrees. In March, it is tentative that we will be playing both the 22 nd and 24th DVDs. We will end off our year with the performance of the 31st and 32nd degree. We ask that ALL members of the Valley come out and support us and attend these reunions. It is an excellent time to indulge in the brotherhood offered by our fraternity.

The Valley welcomes its new members

The Valley would like to welcome all the new members that were brought through our 4th degree in October during our Feast of Tishri celebration. It was good to see many of these take the initiative on go the Valley of Hudsons celebration to have the 32 degree conferred on them. Now that they are 32 degree members, we hope that they will continue to come see our degrees and also take an active part in the Valley.

proudest moments in Masonry. Besides the fact that many of our brothers went above and beyond to help out others, our Sovereign Grand Commander, the Ill. John Wm. McNaughton, also stepped up and sent financial aid into our area. As it stands now, Steven Stefanakos on behalf of Supreme Council has donated over $70,000 to over 50 masons in need of aid. And there is still more waiting to be distributed. This money came swift and direct in a desperate time of need. I was in awe in how fast our leadership came to our aid. You can read more on this in Steves report in the Deputys Representatives corner below. What I saw happen here on Long Island in the aftermath, truly swelled my heart with pride for my fraternity. It is in the darkest time when a mans true charter surfaces. I am now confident that with the brotherly love that over flows in our fraternity, we can survive anything. We lived through 9-11, Y2K, 06/06/06, Swine Flu, and the Rapture and we are still standing strong. Whats next? The End of the World? Bring it on, Mayans, bring it on!

Dearest Brethren, I hope to hear you and your families had a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving. I also hope to hear that you and your families escaped the wrath of Hurricane Sandy. This has been a very trying time for our metropolitan area, and our membership in all of The Craft. We are not immune to such acts of nature, and there are times that we are helpless to such an unbelievable storm surge that our entire area has witnessed. You are NOT alone!! Shortly after the storm, I received a phone call from Ill. Peter Samiec 33, Deputy for New York, and Ill. John McNaughton 33, Sovereign Grand Commander, telling me that help to our brothers was on the way. Almost Immediately, that help arrived in the form of financial help for not just members of The Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, but for ANY Brother Freemason! My only instructions were to use our Masonic Contacts, and identify any member of The Craft that may need some "relief" in getting started on their recovery from the storm. With the help of your Valley Leaders, along with District Deputy Grand Masters from Staten Island to Suffolk (and everywhere in between), we were able to immediately See Deputy Rep on pg. 8

Echoes from the Valley

A place where Brothers can express their thoughts

Our brothers Bil l Lewi s and Ed Midden d orf had posted some thoughts. Bills cam e from his post on Unite d Freemasons Worldwi de , and even though it is more from Ancient Craft Masonry, it is wel l thought out and wort h a look. Ed submitted informat ion about our Valley s hi story. So we all have heard the statement prevent daubing with un-tempered mortar but few if any where able to tell me what it meant or where it came from. All I was able to get from fellow Masons was a shrugged shoulder with blank looks and the all too common statement of whatever it means is unknown to me. It was one Mason that told me all the answers lay within the pages of the volume of sacred law. After doing some reading and thought, I was able to find the passage within the volume. It was in the book of Ezekiel that I came across the passage that this line was taken from. So will I break down the wall that you have daubed with un-tempered mortar, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation shall be uncovered, and it shall fall, and you shall be consumed in its midst: and you shall know that I am the LORD. Thus will I accomplish my wrath upon the wall, and upon them that have daubed it with un-tempered mortar, and will say unto you, the wall is no more, neither they that daubed it. Ezekiel 13: 11-15 This was a lot to take in. At first I was at a loss as to what this all meant. After reading Ezekiel some more it was clear that God was talking about foolish/false prophets and lies used to whitewash events in hopes to hold things together. For mortar to be tempered it needs to be strong, like operative Masonry the mortar used to build dries between stone and brick to bring forth a strong wall. Yet what does this mean for us, the speculative Masons? Here in our lives we have forged walls for our houses to stand with. The walls we have and used are made from the relations we have with the people within our lives, be them family, co-workers, friends, brothers, and people we dont see eye to eye with. We see how a person will lie and try to cover up things in hope that they will be able to hold their world together. Even then people try to smooth over deep breaks between people by a quick whitewash action with in their lives believing/hoping that things will work. We can put the news on and see how things look fantastic for someones life but when the personal cracks start to show and the truth comes out, the walls fall apart. So will I break down the wall that you have daubed with un-tempered mortar, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation shall be uncovered, and it shall fall, and you shall be consumed in its midst. There are too many people on the news to list that we all have seen in the spotlight of everything falling apart in their life. Uncovered allusions to the truth being shown and how weak stories and lies will lead to everything falling apart on you. Simply put forth by Joe Crews in his book Hidden Eyes and Closed Ears, The un-tempered mortar represents an effort to gloss over the seriousness of the defect by false teaching instead of leading the people back to full obedience. As Masons we are told we should be obedient to our faith and to be on the level with each other. When we cheat and defraud others we are no longer on the level and we start to let cracks form with the walls we have building with the people we care about. These are not walls to keep someone out, but walls to support our house and each other. We

Commander in Chief: (cont. from pg. 3) support these organizations that are there supporting our brothers in this time of need. I was very fortunate to be able to represent the Valley of RVC in Poughkeepsie during the weekend of November 17. The new Valley of the Hudson along with the Valleys of Albany and Boston portrayed many of the degrees of the Lodge of Perfection, the 19, 24, and the new 32 degree. We had a contingent of brothers from our Valley that finished their degree requirements and became our latest Sublime Princes. Another class will start in January 2013. Sandy decided to change our landscape of activities for the month of November. Our November Family Life meeting will be held on December 6 as we combine it with the Holiday Party and presentation of the hats to our new Illustrious and MSA recipients. Plan on joining us as we present our gifts to local and Masonic Charities. In addition, we will enjoy wonderful entertainment presented by the Sweet Adeline singers. Join us as we celebrate this holiday season. Dinner by reservation only. We have postponed our dance Puttin' on the Ritz until April 27, 2013 hopefully after the risk of winter weather. Please save the date. The 50/50 prizes will be drawn at that time. Let us offer a prayer for those men and women who are unable to enjoy this holiday with their loved ones because they are serving our nation away from home. Please keep them safe and return them home soon. Bless all who suffered tragedies and those who are reaching out to all in need. I know that some of you are still suffering from SANDY, but we are all alive and that is what is most important. Ann and I wish you all a Happy Holiday

Richard Frenz 32
Deputy Rep: (cont. from pg. 5) start distributing money to brothers that have been displaced from their homes, or who have received major damage to their homes. My travels have taken me to every area of devastation, this storm showed no mercy on any area where our brethren reside. With the funds coming directly from our Supreme Council's Almoner's fund, a brother requiring help, did not have to fill out any forms, go through pages of red tape, all they had to do was ask, in some cases knowing of the devastation, I was able to quietly make a visit and hand over some relief without the Brother even expecting it. This is true Freemasonry in action, and without the help of Supreme Council this never would have been possible. There are many Brothers still hurting out there and there may be more that we don't know about. I ask each of you if you know of a Brother that may need some help getting back on their feet due to the storm, please have them contact myself or the Valley office, help is just a phone call away! If you have not seen Supreme Council's short video on our Almoner's Fund in action, I urge you to go to Supreme Council's website and watch it (www.scottishritenmj.org). I also ask each of you to never forget making a donation to Supreme Council's Almoner's Fund, as we all hope to never have to use it, always remember Supreme Council is there for each and every one of us, should we ever need some Brotherly Relief in times of personal devastation and hardship. I look forward to seeing each of you around The Valley, and wholeheartedly welcome our new class of Scottish Rite Masons!!

Please pay them as soon as possible and if you have any problems, please contac6t me and I will speak to the Hospitaler. These are unusual times, so we must think about our Brothers. January 3rd we will have another reunion with the usual pre-meeting dinner. If you have someone you wish to bring into Scottish rite, now is the time to add him on to the existing class. This night will repeat the 4 th degree, and also do the 14th degree. Pick up a petition or ask for one. This class will all receive the 200th Anniversary medal in June.

In 2013, we will be celebrating the 200 years as the

Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of Scottish Rite within the United States.
The official celebration period is from August 5, 2012 thru December 31, 2013.
It is the desire of the 200th Anniversary Committee to see that all Valleys celebrate the 200th Anniversary in a manner appropriate for their Valley. There will be no single event or Anniversary Class for the jurisdiction, yet there will be many ways in which each State and Valley may join in the jurisdiction wide celebration. For all new initiates, there will be a special 200th Anniversary pocket jewel to be given to all candidates receiving the 32 in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in the period from Jan. 1, 2012 thru Dec. 31, 2013. Extra pocket jewels will be available this summer to any member at a cost of $25.00 each. Please contact Bob Stack to purchase your medals at 516.678.3232

Our Learning Centers

Remember Brethren to Support our
Most of the brothers have heard of the Learning Centers sponsored by the Scottish Rite. The learning Centers are more than teaching locations. These centers are designed to teach young people how to read! You see, there are people out there who do not understand what the printed words mean,. These people dont see written words as most do, therefore they must be taught how to translate what they see. The program is designed to help people with Dyslexia. There is always something in the Northern Light magazine on their activities. With all that being said, there is a real need for financial support of the program. I am asking each brother in our Valley to contribute an additional $5.00 more than usual. If this is a burden, than any amount is welcome. So this year when your dues notice comes, include a note as to how much you wish to be designated to the Scottish Rite Learning Centers, Thank you. Fraternally, Edward W. Membership Incentive Program

The Membership Committee is always looking for ways to reward you for your membership in the Scottish Rite. We also need to work on replacing those who have laid down their working tools. This program addresses both of these needs Beginning in September of 2012, if you are the top line signer on Three petitions for this year, you will be awarded One Year of Paid Up Dues for the Valley of Rockville Centre. The totals are for this year only and the candidate must attend and complete all the requirements to obtain the 32nd Degree for the top line signer to be eligible for this award. I know we are all proud of our fraternity, but sometimes we need a little extra incentive to encourage a brother mason to join the Scottish Rite. This program provides that a reason to ask and an opportunity to get something for it. All you need do is ask.

As the Valley of Rockville Centre enters the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rites anniversary celebration, we can celebrate our early history. The Aurora Grata Lodge of Perfection was in existence as a Valley before the establishment of what we now know as the Supreme Council of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. The Aurora Grata was instituted on Tuesday, November 8th 1808. The NMJ of the USA was not established until 1813. More on our history to follow.
