Elizabeth L Wood Cindy Burchett Human Relations Independent Study 7 March 2013 Resource Analysis for Bias: PBIS Black in Latin America After my disappointment with the website I used two weeks ago in class, I remembered seeing a great link on Twitter posted by a fellow Spanish teacher. It was a link to a PBS segment called Black in Latin America, and contained segments from many countries. I was interested to see if this would qualify as a decent multicultural resource and it did. The only downfall about this segment was that it targeted on race, but it explored that race across ethnicities, countries, and socioeconomic groups. Countries explored were Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, and Dominican Republic. There was a slightly higher emphasis on the lower SES level in some of the segments, but Brazil showed the higher SES as well. There were multiple points of view, from locals to cultural analyzers, which explained the cultural impact blacks have in Latin American countries. The clips did not deter from addressing race, but rather put it at the forefront. I really like this resource and Im thinking about ways I can use it in class. Typically, I like to use resources that are in Spanish to foster the speaking and listening skills were building in class, but I definitely see the importance and usefulness of using a resource like this one in my classroom.
