Abstract
The Indian retail sector is currently undergoing important changes that are
culminating in a process of internal restructuring of both companies and the sector
as a whole. In addition, due to an ongoing process of increasing organization and
implementation of information technology, the sector has adopted a new form of
relationship with suppliers, and has developed a wide range of knowledge
regarding the habits of different consumers. The availability of this data, in
conjunction with the concentration of the sector, is increasing the power of retailers
relative to producers, in accordance with the worldwide trend toward the transfer of
power in the productive chain, from industry to retail.
In this document we are developing a computerized system for a retail store having
more than one department. The system will help the user by facilitating the billing,
stock management and payroll etc. In this document we have followed a systematic
approach of developing the system known as Software Development Life Cycle
(SDLC).
An SDLC should result in a high quality system that meets or exceeds customer
expectations, within time and cost estimates, works effectively and efficiently.

We would also like to thank Mr. Aman Patti, faculty Punjab College of Technical
Education and project guide of our project for his guidance and support.
We would like to thank Mr. Davinder Singh, Store Manager of Reliance Fresh for
his for his input and expertise regarding the retail sector.
It would not have been possible to complete this project report without various
softwares, like Microsoft windows XP, Microsoft Office 2003, Adobe Reader 9.0
and Microsoft Visual Studio for which we are extremely grateful.
Thank You.
Problem Identification
Problem Identification
‘A preliminary look at the problem area’
Retail Industry
India retail industry is the largest industry in India, with an employment of around
8% and contributing to over 10% of the country's GDP. Retail industry in India is
expected to rise 25% yearly being driven by strong income growth, changing
lifestyles, and favorable demographic patterns.
It is expected that by 2016 modern retail industry in India will be worth US$
175- 200 billion. India retail industry is one of the fastest growing industries with
revenue expected in 2008 to amount US$ 320 billion and is increasing at a rate of
5% yearly. The biggest challenge Trained manpower shortage is a challenge facing
the organized retail sector in India. The Indian retailers have difficultly in finding
trained person and also have to pay more in order to retain them. This again brings
down the Indian retailers profit levels.
The problem regarding the computerization of the retail store. Today present retail
stores are computerized but after a brief survey we came to know that there are
certain problems like:
Many of the problems are being solved by the present computerized systems, but
not effectively.
We are focusing Malik Store, Pakhowal Store as our main area of solving the
problem. After analyzing the present system of the store we came to know that they
are facing the above problems.
Present system in the store is computerized but the system is just providing an e
billing service to the store.
Stock management is not done by the piece of the software. Store needs a system
which can also do the job of payroll.
After analyzing the problem we can say that the store needs a new and enhanced
computerized system which can facilitate their sales, purchase and management of
the stock.
This will also perform the job of payroll and will inform the user about the stock
which out of date and will solve problem of multiple price on a single product.
Requirement Analysis
Requirement Analysis
‘Determining the needs or conditions to meet for a new
product’
After a brief introduction of the software we need to identify the user. As we are
focusing on the malik store so people working there are our user of the system.
As the system is already computerized the user does not need any kind of formal
computer training.
Requirements
User Requirements:
A friendly user interface
Fast processing for better performance
Ease of use
Functional Requirements
For proper functioning of the system we need appropriate hardware and software
support.
Software Requirements
For the development of the proposed system we need visual basic 6.0 or VB.NET
and MS Access or Oracle for development and database. Visual basic is easy to use
and oracle gives high flexibility and security to the database.
Hardware Requirements
Hardware Requirements of the system is not much as it needs maximum of 256
MB of ram with around 1GB of free disk space. Having a 32 bit Processor.
Feasibility Study
Feasibility Study
‘Determining the suitability of alternative solutions or
actions’
...is it possible?
Questions arising the possibility of the system can be answered easily as we are not
comparing the technology of the present and proposed system but are focusing on
the basic problem.
As the system is using very basic software platform and flexible database we can
say the proposed system is possible.
...is it justified?
Yes the system is totally justified as it is solving all the problems being faced by the
store by keeping the basic things as they are.
Feasibilities
Schedule Feasibility: The project will take around four to six months to get ready
to install and use.
