PROGRAM RATIONALE: The Graduate Program leading to the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering degree, with specialization in Biomedical Engineering, aims to engage the students in providing the link between Engineering and Medicine through coursework and interdisciplinary research. Specifically, students will be trained through: (1) theoretical instructions in basic engineering and chemical engineering concepts relevant to Medicine; (2) introduction to specialized topics in biomedical engineering, such as biomedical instrumentation, systems physiology, biosensors, biomaterials, biomechanics, and biomedical imaging; and (3) practical training in the form of thesis. Allied fields, such as Pharmacy, Food Engineering, Materials Science, and Environmental and Energy Engineering, will also be interlinked with the course work and thesis topics.

ChEM2 - Biochemical Engineering


This covers the various applications of biochemical engineering principles for modern and innovative bioprocesses in industrial and biomedical systems.

ChEC1 Advanced Transport Phenomena
Covers advanced topics in heat, mass and momentum transport in solid, fluid and multi-phase systems as applied to industrial and biomedical processes; flow analyses of Newtonian and nonNewtonian fluids with emphasis on the solution of equations of continuity, energy, and mass transfer, associated with the flow of these fluids.

ChEM3 - Genetic Engineering


This covers the elements of molecular structure of DNA. It gives an overview of the processes of DNA synthesis, and the subsequent processes required to make protein such as insulin; presents the developed and emerging methods of gene expression control with potential to treat diseases.

ChEC2 - Advanced Chemical Reaction Engineering


Applications of chemical engineering principles and biochemistry to the analyses of chemical and biochemical reaction kinetics involving homogenous and heterogeneous reactions, which are relevant to reactor and bioreactor design and the understanding of biological systems sustenance.

ChEM4 - Advanced Fluid Mechanics


This covers the analyses and applications of conservation equations, turbulent flow, inviscid fluid and low Reynolds number fluid dynamics, boundary layer theory; and non-Newtonian fluid mechanics (polymeric liquids and suspensions) and microfluids relevant to chemical process industries and biomedical systems. It also covers introduction to rheology.

ChEC3 - Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics


Detailed discussion of the thermodynamic properties of pure compounds and mixtures; computational works emphasize the application of thermodynamics in industrial and biological systems involving multicomponent phase and chemical reaction equilibria.

ChEM5 Chemical and Physical Basis of Bioimaging and Biosensing


This covers the basic principles and technologies for imaging and sensing the chemical, electrical, and structural properties of living tissues and biological macromolecules. Topics include magnetic resonance spectroscopy, MRI, positron emission tomography and flourescent probes among others.

GS 500 - St. Thomas on Critical Thinking
As the philosophical foundation of Research Methodology, it is a study of the principles of and skills in critical thinking according to St. Thomas Aquinas in the three areas of mental cognition: simple apprehension, judgment, and reasoning; and of common fallacies towards the acquisition of the art of argumentation.

ChEC4 - Physiological Systems


This covers the regulation and control in biological systems, with emphasis on human physiology and principles of feedback, physiology of membranes and membrane transport systems. The cellular and molecular principles of organ and tissue physiology are covered through major human physiological systems including renal, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, digestive, and nervous systems.

ChEM6 - Sensors Technology


Basic principles of chemical sensors and biosensors: transducer elements and recognition compounds. It emphasizes the application of thin films, interface techniques, analytical sciences and signal processing as tools in life sciences, biochemistry, medicine and in various chemical process industries.

GS 501 - Research Methodology


The student is introduced to research concepts relevant to chemical and biomedical engineering, and allied fields. Discussions center on the vital parts of a thesis and their preparation. The expected output is a thesis proposal. (Review the UST-GS Thesis Writing Guide Booklet.)

ChEM7 - Engineering Principles of Drug Delivery


Application of chemical and engineering principles to drug formulation and delivery. Specific topics include traditional drug formulation, mechanisms and kinetics of pharmaceutical stability. Stimuli-sensitive systems, controlled-release devices, pro-drugs, targeted drug delivery, biomaterials, gene therapy, and governmental regulatory issues.

ChEC5 Biomedical Engineering


This covers the basic concepts of biomedical engineering and how they are related to human physiological systems and human activity. It gives an overview of how the link among biological science, medicine and engineering is used as basis of biomedical engineering.

ENGINEERING SCIENCES: (6 units)


ES1 - Advanced Engineering Mathematics
Analytical approaches in Mathematics to solve linear and non-linear, ordinary and partial differential equations. It also covers vector and tensor analyses, linear algebra, Laplace transform, series expansion, Fourier transform, and matrix methods.

ChEM1 - Mathematical Methods for Chemical and Biomedical Engineering Analysis
This covers the application of advanced mathematical techniques to chemical and biomedical engineering systems analyses, with emphasis on mathematical modeling, data analysis, and curve fitting relevant to these systems.

ChEM8 Advanced Food Engineering


The application of chemical principles in food systems, focused on optimal bioguided process design, innovations in gentle processing, and minimal processing to produce safe, nutritious and wholesome food.

ES2 - Advanced Numerical Analysis


This covers the use of numerical techniques and computer applications in solving complex engineering

ChEM9 - Nanotechnology
This covers the principles and applications of the emerging field of nanotechnology, with emphasis on the

application to chemical, medical, electronics and biological systems.

ChEM10 - Materials Science and Engineering


This covers structure, analysis and thermodynamics of solids, phase transformations, properties determination of metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, biomaterials and electronics materials/nano-materials with emphasis on those important in the fabrication of biomedical gadgets, artificial organs and prosthetics, as well as innovative and green materials for packaging and textile.
