Rationale
Contemporarystructuralengineeringdesignusescomputerframeanalysissoftwaretodeterminethedeflections,forcesandbendingmomentsinastructure duetoasetofloads.Thesecomputergeneratedresultsarethenusedintheapplicationofcodebaseddesignmethods.Thiscourseisnotaboutstructural designingeneral.Itfocusesontheparticularknowledgeandskillsnecessarytodevelopacorrectcomputermodelofastructureandontheinterpretation anddesignapplicationofinformationgeneratedbythecomputeranalysis.Thisisahighlypracticalandhandsoncoursedesignedtodevelopresponsible andinformedproficiencyintheuseofcomputeranalysisforstructuraldesign.

Synopsis
Structuralengineeringdesignisacontinuallyevolvingprocess.Thedevelopmentofcomputeranalysistoolshashadamassiveimpactonwhatengineersdo intheirdaytodaywork.Twentyorthirtyyearsagostructuralengineersneededproficiencyinawiderangeofmanualcalculationmethodstoanalyse structures.Asetof"designcalculations"atthetimewaslikelytoincludeextensivepagesofdetailednumericalworkings.Somemayarguethatproficiency withsuchhandcalculationmethodsremainsusefultoadesignengineerbutsuchskillsarenolongeressential.Whatisessentialisasophisticatedand informedunderstandingofhowtomodelastructureinacomputersothatthemodelconformsbothwithrealityandwiththeexpectationsofthedesigncodes. Usingaprocessoflearningbydiscovery,thestudentisguidedthroughaseriesofdiscussionsandinvestigativecomputermodellingexercises.These demonstratehowveryminormodellingchangescanleadtoverydifferent"answers".Thecourselooksinconsiderabledetailatapproximatemethodsof analysisthatcanbeusedbothtoenhancethestudentsunderstandingofastructuralsystemandasacheckofcomputeranalysisresults.Thecoursetakes theopportunitytousecomputermodellingtoinvestigatevariousstructuralphenomenaandtoconsolidateandextendundergraduateunderstandingof designprinciples.Thereissignificantemphasisplacedonthedevelopmentofmeaningfulcomputeraideddesigncalculationsthatrecordmodelling assumptionsandtheprimaryanalysisoutput.
