Raffles In The News 1. RI has been featured or mentioned a total of 90 times in the major media channels during the months of October to December 2012. Details of these articles can be found in Annex A. Noteworthy Academic Achievements 2. A list of our academic achievements from October to December 2012 can be found in Annex B. Our athletes have also represented Singapore in various international and local competitions, and their participation is included in Annex C as well. NOTEWORTHY ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS


05 October MediaCorp National Science Challenge In the televised finals of the National Science Challenge broadcast on MediaCorp Channel 5, the RI team comprising Darren Chua (3F), Poh Ying Ming (3F), Samuel Fong (3Q), Li Bing Jian (3F), Jeremy Tian (3G) and Eugene Lee (3F) - fought hard to secure third place. They had previously gone through two pre-qualifying rounds in May, and were one of the twelve teams that made it to the televised rounds of the competition. The National Science Challenge was jointly organised by A*STAR and Science Centre Singapore, with support from the Ministry of Education to promote Science among students and the local public. China Western Mathematics Invitational Olympiad Four RI students were selected to represent Singapore in the China Western Mathematics Invitational Olympiad held in Inner Mongolia, Hohhot. A total of 144 participants from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore took part. Liu Yijia (2M) topped the entire competition while Sheldon Tan (2M) came in 16th with a silver medal. David Lin Kewei (3C) and Teh Jiun Harn (4L) clinched silver medals, finishing in 20th and 29th respectively. NEA-Panasonic Eco-Ideas Challenge 2012 Rafflesians took home the grand prize of a five-day study trip to Japan as well as the second prize of $4000 (which would go towards RIs environmental causes): Grand Prize: Chung Ray Ern, Hari Narayana Kope, Jo-Adam Saiful Mirza, Ng Yu Song, and Jonathan Chua En Zhe (all from 2L) Second Prize: Chua Yu Jing Jonathan, Song Lizhi, Tay Zhi Yu Ernest, Tristen Zheng Junlei, and Tan Rui Xuan (all from 2G) 24 October GIC Young Leaders Award 2012 Loo Tien Pan (13S06E) and Amanda Choo Min Hui (13S03P) were awarded the GIC Young Leaders Award 2012. The award recognises students with leadership potential and sterling grades, and who serve their school and the community. Tien Pan is the Chairperson of Raffles Economics and Current Affairs Society and a member of the Red Cross Youth, while Amanda is President of Raffles Debate and a member of the Interact Club. Australian Mathematics Competition 2012 The following students won prizes at the competition organised by the Australian Mathematics Trust, for students from Year 3-12 in Australia, and their equivalent grades in other countries. : Year 1: Ma Zhao Yu (1L), Tan Likai (1K), William Guo (1D), Tan Xue Liang (1L), James Wijaya (1J), Lim Wei Jie (1T), Jannes Koriadi (1J), Ong Yan Chun (1L) Year 2: Wang Weiduo (2B), Yang Gan (2M), Sheldon Kieren Tan (2Q), Cong

Feng (2M), Ka Seungyup (2J), Huang Daran (2Q), Liu Tianyi (2M), Glen Lim Wei An (2P), Shi Jing Lin (2M), Liu Yijia (2M) Year 3L: Eugene Lee (3F), Tan Siah Yong AMC Prudence Award (3F), David Lin Kewei (3C), Xavier Lim Xiao Zheng (3C), Glenn Ee Je Hong (3C), Chua Zhe Xuan (3F), and Tay Wei Shinn Eric (3F) Year 4: Chan Jau Tung (4F) AMC Prudence Award 19 November Now You Know Competition on Cyberwellness Computer Science Society members - Christabella Irwanto (13S05B), Aiysh Akhtar Sheikh (13S06A) and Kevan Tan Tian Jun (13S06N) won the top prize at the Now You Know competition on Cyberwellness organised by Google and MDA. The students won an all-expense paid trip to visit Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. 25th Singapore Physics Olympiad (SPhO) 2012 26 Year 5 Physics Raffles Academy (RA) students represented the school and won the Top Institution for SPhO Award. Our students won a total of 23 awards seven Golds (out of 10), seven Silvers (out of 15), seven Bronzes (out of 16) and two Honourable Mentions (out of 16). Lin Yongjie (13S06O) also won the Best Overall Individual Performance Award.

ACHIEVEMENTS BY SPORTING & UNIFORMED GROUPS

Sporting Activities
9-14 October 19-23 October, 13-18 November 20-28 October ASIA Youth Champtionships 2012 (Badminton) Ryan Ng Zin Rei (2A) took part in the competition in Dongguan, China. ITF5 G5 & G4 Tournament Ng Hao Yuan (13S06M) represented the State in Brunei and Ipoh, Malaysia respectively. IODA North American Championships 2012 (Sailing) Samuel Neo (1C) and Koh Yi Kun (1A) represented Singapore in Valle De Bravo, Mexico. Jonathan Yeo wins TNP School Sports Star Award Rafflesian sailor Jonathan Yeo (4J) was awarded The New Paper's School Sports Star Award which celebrates the best student athletes in the local sports scene and recognises good sportsmanship. Earlier in the year, Jonathan won the title in the Byte Class (B Div) Sailing competition in the 2012 National Inter-School Sports Championship despite sustaining a serious spinal injury. World Junior Championships 2012 (Badminton) Ryan Ng Zin Rei (2A) took part in the competition in Chiba, Japan. South East Asian Fencing Federation Championships 2012 Christabel Yong Mei Xin (13S06M) represented the State in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. International Softball Federation Ix Junior Mens World Championship 2012 Six Rafflesians were selected to represent Singapore Parana, Argentina: Andrew Tan Wei-Kang (3A), Joshua Tam Jun Wen Toshifumi (3K), Edward Lee Jia Yao (3W), Ye Zi An (3V), Thiviya Kumaran s/o Rajappan (4A), and Shamus John Lee Kuan Wen (4J). 12-16 December Kuala Lumpur Open Championships 2012 (Squash) Four Rafflesians represented Singapore to take part in the competition: Leong Yew Sing Timothy (4E), Rayden Tan Keng Wai (3V), Tan Ijoe (1F) and Kevin Tong Weng Jin (1M). 20 December IAAF World Youth Championships Rafflesian hurdler Ang Ding Hui won a spot on the IAAF World Youth Championships to be held in Donetsk, Ukraine in 2013. The Championships is a global athletics event organised biennially by the International Association of Athletics Federations for competitors aged 17 and below.

Presidents' Scout Award Rafflesians Li Yiming (12S06D), Ng Zheng Han Ernest Clement (12S06I) and Wong Kwang IK (12S06E) were presented with the prestigious President's Scout Award at the Istana from Singapore's Chief Scout, His Excellency President Tony Tan. The Presidents' Scout Award is presented to our nation's most outstanding Venture Scouts in recognition of their excellent leadership and personal performance, their dedication to the Scout movement and their service to the community.

ACHIEVEMENTS BY MUSICAL, AESTHETICS & OTHER CULTURAL GROUPS


October MOE S7 Cluster Visual Arts Award Shen Yu Jun (2Q) was awarded a Gold award. Music Elective Programme/ Raffles Academy (Music) Overseas Performance at Opening Festival of Bramall Music Building, Birmingham University (UK) Students performed a repertoire of contemporary works including alumnus Joyce Kohs IX Lives of a Cat. Singapore National Chinese Music Competition Year 4 Raffles Academy (Music) student Nicholas Quek Wei Sheng (4D) won 1st prize in the Guzheng (Youth Category) at the 2012 Singapore National Chinese Music Competition. Nicholas had earlier won first prize in the Amateur Youth Category of the Tong Yan Cup International Zheng Art Week festival in Harbin. Raffles Voices wins Grand Prix in Europe To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Raffles Voices, the choir embarked on a trip to Poland and Lithuania, competing in two festivals with a total of 10 songs. 3rd Krakow Advent & Christmas Choir Festival (7 9 December, Poland) Students performed at the St Paul and St Peter's Church in Krakow, garnering two gold diplomas in the Youth and Chamber categories and received the 2nd highest score. 20th International Choir Festival of Sacred, Advent and Christmas Music, (13-16 December, Kaunas, Lithuania) The choir was awarded a special jury Prize for the Most Expressive Choir, the Audience Prize and the Gold Diploma for the highest score of the day.

ACTIVITIES & EVENTS AROUND SCHOOL


12 14 October Adventure Leadership Programme (ALPs) Training Camp 34 students and four teachers participated in a three-day two-night training camp at the MOE Labrador Adventure Centre to prepare them for the ALPs trekking expedition at the Alpine National Park in Australia. Activities included tent pitching, outdoor cooking, navigation and a long training hike. Mega Mugging Madness Year 6 students studying for the A-Level examinations were treated to buffet spreads whipped up by the Raffles Parents' Association (RPA) from 15 25 October. This is the fifth time the RPA has organised the much-anticipated annual event that saw Year 6 Rafflesians helping themselves a lovingly cooked (and served) meal by the parents for just one dollar per student. Madam Gertrude Marsh visits RI Mdm Gertrude Marsh and her husband Mr rnulf Norgrds visit to the RI's Heritage Centre and Looi Eng San Memorial Garden was a poignant trip as Mdm Marsh is the widow of the late Mr Looi Eng San, an RI alumnus who was a prominent agronomist and botanist. The Garden and the Heritage Centre are slated to be revamped in 2013, in light of RI's 190th Founder's Day. Mdm Marsh provided suggestions on how the Garden should be developed to make space for more functional use, and to offer students and staff of RI something for today, tomorrow and the years after. Deepavali Celebrations An exhibition and food fair was organised by the members of the Indian Cultural Club to celebrate Deepavali. Malay Cultural Day Camp Organised by the Malay Cultural Club for students taking Malay Language from Year 1-3, the camp sought to promote Malay culture as well as develop its student leaders leadership and organisational skills. Students participated in a series of cultural activities which included cultural games like the Gasing Competition to build team rapport, and the camp culminated in a cultural food festival in the evening. Council Retreat 2012 The Council retreat was held in Singapore (instead of the usual overseas retreat), with students staying at RI Boarding. Student leaders were engaged in various activities to help develop salient learning points such as focus, communication and self-awareness.

E W Barker Institute of Sports Auckland University of Technology (EWBIS AUT) Sports Research program 30 Students and three Teachers undertook a one week in-campus programme with AUT as a component of the EWBIS Sports Science Research Programme. The trip enabled students to understand and explore possible options to pursue further studies, or consider careers in sports research, sports science and medicine, sports education and administration and sports coaching. Grad Night 2012 The Class of 2012 celebrated the end of their pre-university education (and end of the A Level examinations) at the Orchard Hotel. Themed Film Noir style, the event saw a host of special performances, plenty of photo-taking, reminiscing key batch milestones, and the much anticipated pageant contest to crown the prom king and queen.
