GOLDEN EAGLES SIGHTINGS

APRIL - SEPTEMBER

HIGHLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA

The number of people actually reporting eagles they see influences the totals shown here. They do not
indicate the number of eagles in the area. They do suggest that golden eagles are not just in Highland
County during the winter, but are also in the county during the breeding season. We cannot rule out the
common misidentification of juvenile bald eagles as golden eagles; however numerous reports by
different people in the same area on the same day lend credence to these reports. All golden eagle
sightings are included in the full seasonal data reports and these show more sightings during the cold
months than warm months.

immature golden sub-adult flew east and perched in

became visible perched in the trees. It

distinct tail band & wing perched. The immature GOEA
patches appeared west of the road and soared
overhead for some time. A red tail
hawk appeared and it and the GOEA
did some rolls and talon displays. The
RT disappeared and the GOEA
continued soaring west of the road.
The BAEA remained perched the
entire time.

to look there was a turkey vulture still
on the ground near where the eagle
and raven flew up from, picking at
something we couldn't see. The two
white wing patches and white base of
tail were clearly visible on the eagle as
it flew up from the ground. We lost
sight of the eagle after it flew, but it
appeared to depart in a southwesterly
direction.

a fence post most of the time and a
second later perched on a different
post west of it. The eagles kept flying
in and out of the maple tree south of
carcass making it hard to get an

fledgling yards south of VA 639 around displaying tail while tossing
something into the air. As the bird
jumped and flapped the observers got
a very good look at the top of its tail.
The tail was very solid white with a
wide solid dark band on the edge. The
head looked like it was glowing in the
sun. The observers watched it for 15
minutes.

yards south of house. When it flew, it
flew west toward Paul Colaw house.

1 Time: 1000 All in one place at once Arthur K. Ranck, Mrs. Ranck West side of VA 640 slightly south It was unreal. My wife and I were
Bald eagles of WV line and one miles south of birding in Highland County north of
2 adults WV line. Blue grass around 10 AM and we saw
1 or more immature several Turkey Vultures., two adult
Golden eagles Baled Eagles, an immature Bald Eagle,
2 adults and an adult Golden Eagle at one
5 immature eagles place. We proceeded north about a
unidentified species mile to park in Margaret O’Brien’s lane
there on the county line.Across the
road in the field we waw some eagles
flyin and then they started collecting on
the ground. We could wee elecenn
(11!) eagles at one time. Eventually
eight settled on the ground in one
cluster. In the total group of eleven we
counted three adult Bald Eagle and at
least two adult Golden Eagles. The
rest were immature birds. We heard an
eagle calling and looked up and there
 were a Bald and a Golden interacting.
Often when we lok for eagles we are
unsure if we are seeing eh same birds
over and over, but this time the number
was for real as they were all at one
place.

About 1:30 we saw an adult Golden

April 15, 2008 Golden eagle Tom Duncan North side US 84 west of US 220 Immature GE flew south on east slope
Time: 1040 Immature- tail ¾ bright 6.6 miles of Lantz Mt. A large hawk arrived and
white began diving at the eagle. Eagle flew
back north toward Meadowdale area.

1 Time: 1355 Golden eagle Sandy Hevener VA 642 about 0.5 mile east of VA Immature GE in road eating roadkill. It
Immature- white tail 640 just east of Blue Grass had a small head. The observer in car
base, dark brown fringe, got a very clear look at its tail and back
no pattern, possible as it did not fly up as quickly as eagles
hatch year usually do.
