Lesson Three
The Lower Meadow

1. Wet the sky area with gesso and while

the canvas is still wet, add ultramarine
blue and blend down from the top.

2. Make the sun by using yellow and white.

Use circular strokes and a very light
touch to make the sun, then use a clean
very soft brush to blend the sun colors
outward.

3. To make the most distant mountain, use a mixture of ultramarine blue,

purple and white. The mixture should be very pale.

4. As you work your way forward, make an

arrangement of peaks and darken the
color. Add additional purple and blue in
small amounts to continue darkening the
shade.

5. Use a dry brush technique

and white and a tiny yellow
to add the highlights and
give the mountains some
shape. Keep the center of
the mountains very light.
6. To make the foreground you can
mix green into the purple mixture
to create a deep green. Working
from the back forward, add layers
of trees and land. Keep the layers
curved to indicate a slope. Tap in
indications of bushes and trees.
Then as usual – add highlights to
some of the tree (bush) tops.

7. After letting the first layer dry, add a

brighter layer in the center and a
darkest layer in the front. (don’t
worry about the path yet) Take the
brush and tap in trees on a second
layer here and there as you see fit.
Add highlights to a few trees in the
background with your white/yellow
mixture, but don't overdo them.

8. Using burnt sienna, lay in a distant path. Start in the rear, it will be very
narrow and widen as it get closer. Practice on scrap paper first if you
don’t fee comfortable.

9. Add trees and limbs to both sides of

he painting using a mix of burnt
sienna, purple, and blue. Allow the
painting to dry completely. Now add
highlights on the trees using a knife,
dry brush, or script liner using your
white and yellow mixture.
10. Dry brush in sun rays using pure
white.

11. Add some leaves to the trees

using a green/purple mixture.
You can add some highlights,
but don't overdo them.

12. Add your final touches – a

fence post, highlights to the
hilltops or more bushes. Don't
forget to sign your painting!
