12/28/2012 RE: SEIU 1000 Financial Transparency Audit

Dear Paul Harris: During our recent audit attempt, you limited us to four (4) hours to inspect the records we were given. You also made certain that we had no skilled help to analyze what was given. We were not allowed to have a lawyer (much less a tax lawyer) or, an accountant, present (just SEIU members). Moreover, when we found something of interest, we could not make a copy or tell anyone what we found. That said, your 990 Public Record Tax form for 2010, Part VI, Section C Disclosure, in answer to the question Describe how your organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public, simply states No. No transparency there. During our so-called audit, we were shown statements totaling $23,000,000. Yet your 990 on page 10 shows $59,455,612 in expenses. In short, you have made every effort to hide the truth from your members. Hopefully, this will change. We are not going away. All SEIU members deserve better. There are twenty (20) expense items listed in Part IX Statement of Functional Expenses. We hereby request to see the backup documents for each of these expense entries. We also request that we be given sufficient time to make a reasonable analysis no less than a day per entry. We are talking $59,455,612! Furthermore, we will need to have present a tax lawyer and/or an accountant of our choice to help us do the necessary analysis. Our objective is to make SEIU 1000s finances transparent as the law and morality require; and nothing less than all SEIU 1000 members should require. Therefore, my team requests the right to copy and publish our findings good or bad. If you believe in transparency, you will grant our requests and not fight us on this matter; otherwise, we will know that your past pattern of deceit has not changed and we will act accordingly. We would appreciate an answer in seven days. Additionally, we note that your 2011 990 Public Tax Filing has not been timely filed as required by law. This is probably just a clerical error but since it is not currently available to the public, please send us a copy so we can begin to analyze your 2011 finances as soon as the information is available. We all know that transparency is the glue that holds our union together. Rest assured that all SEIU 1000 members will applaud your cooperation in this matter.
