As we begin let us show you the parts of the violin. Maybe you could point to them as your teacher explains them!

When you play the violin you will be playing it with a bow!

You will also need the following to use with your violin.

A block of Rosin ( This is to rub on the hair of your bow, it helps to grip

onto the strings)

A soft duster ( This is to keep your instrument free of rosin dust after youve played) A shoulder rest (of a piece of sponge or foam, this is to help you to hold your violin comfortably)

Taking care of your violin and your bow!

Keep your violin clean and free from rosin dust Dont leave it in the sun, in the car on a hot day or any other place that is hot Dont get it wet Always loosen the hair on your bow when you are not playing your violin Dont touch the hair on your bow with your fingers If a bow hair comes loose ask an adult to cut it off close to each end. Dont pull it out!

How to hold to your bow.

Place your little finger an area at the end of the bow called the frog.

Bend your thumb and place it just above a part of the bow called the ferrule. This is shown is also shown in the picture. The Ferrule

Thumb Curve your fingers over the stick of the bow, spread them out a little bit. Your thumb and middle should form a circle.

Neck

The note were going to play is open G. Place the hair of the bow between the neck and the bridge as shown in the picture. To get the sound of the note the hair rubs against the string.

This piece uses the open G. The Gs are a type of note called a crotchet. They are written on five lines called a stave.

The Open D string

Play the open D string with the bow in the position as shown in the picture.

When youre playing these open A notes remember to say shh to yourself when you see the crotchet rest

The open note E is shown in the picture below.

Downbow

The piece above uses the open strings that weve played so far. The symbols above the notes show the direction of the bow. They are called the upbow and the downbow.

This piece uses a new type of note which you play for two beats called a minim

This piece of music uses open G and the note A which is played on the G string as shown in the picture.

This piece uses the open D string and a new note E which is played as shown in the picture below.
