MATERIALS REQUIRED

• Main Colour 4 X 50 grams

• Contrasting Colour 1 25 grams

• Small quantity of ribbon for threading

TENSION 21 stitches x 27 rows to 10cm (4 in) square, measured over stocking stitch on size 3.75 mm needles.

BACK

Using No 3.75mm needles and Contrast Colour 1, cast on 57sts and knit 3 rows, break off yarn. Join Contrast Colour 2 and knit 2 rows, break off yarn. Change to Main Colour and knit 2 rows. Cont in st st and Main Colour until work meas 17cm (6¾”) from beg.

Shape Armhole

Cast off 3 sts, knit to end. Next row—Cast off 3 sts, purl to end of row. 51 sts Next row—K2, sl1, knit to last 3sts, sl1, K2 Next row—Purl Rep these last two rows 14 times, 28 rows in total.

Shape for back neck

Next row—K2, sl1 purl ways, K15, cast off 15sts, knit to last 3 sts, sl1, K2 Next row—Cast off 9 sts, purl to end Next row—Knit Next row—Cast off remaining 9 sts Next row—Join yarn to 18 sts left on needle and purl to end of row Next row—Cast off 9 sts knit last 3 sts, sl1, K2 Next row—Purl, then cast off rem 9 sts

RIGHT FRONT

Using No 3.75mm needles and Contrast Colour 1, cast on 27sts and knit 3 rows, break off yarn. Change to Contrast Colour 2 and knit 2 rows, break off yarn, change to Main Colour and knit 2 rows. Cont working in st st and Main Colour for a further 8 rows. Next row—Holes for ribbon insertion, K2 *yfw K2 tog , repeat from* to last st, K1 Work a further 7 rows in st st. Shape Armhole

Wrong side facing cast off 3sts at beg of this row, purl to end of row. (24 sts) Next row—Knit to last 3 sts, sl1, K2 Next row—Purl Rep these two rows until work measures 23 cm,

Shape Neck

With right side facing cast off 3sts, knit to last 3sts, sl1, K2. Shape Shoulder

Cast off 9sts at beg of next row, purl to end of row. Next row—Knit Cast off rem 9 sts.

LEFT FRONT

Using No 3.75mm needles and Contrast Colour 1, cast on 27sts and knit 3 rows, break off yarn. Change to Contrast Colour 2 and knit 2 rows, break off yarn, change to Main Colour and knit 2 rows. Cont working in st st and Main Colour for a further 8 rows. Next row—Holes for ribbon insertion, K1, *yfw K2 tog, rep from * to end of row. Work a further 7 rows in st st. Shape Armhole

Shape Shoulder

Cast off 9sts and beg of next row, knit to end of row. Next row—Purl. Cast off rem 9 sts.

SLEEVES

Using No 3.75mm needles and Contrast Colour 1, cast on 33sts and knit 3 rows, break off yarn , change to Contrast Colour 2 and knit 2 rows, break off yarn, change to Main Colour and knit 2 rows. Cont working in st st and Main Colour, incr one st at each end of next and every foll 4th row, 9 times.

Work 3 rows in sts st. Cast off 3sts at beg of next 2 rows. Work a further 4 rows in sts st and then cast off.

ROUND NECK

With right side facing, using No 3.75mm and Contrast Colour 1, pick up 16sts on right front, 25sts across back and 16sts on left front. Work 4 rows in garter st, then cast off.

OPTIONAL HOOD

Using No 3.75mm needles and Contrast Colour 1, cast on 73sts and knit 3 rows, break off yarn, change to Contrast Colour 2 and knit 2 rows, break off yarn, change to Main Colour and knit 2 rows. Cont in st st and Main Colour until work meas 17cm, (6¾”), or length desired, then cast off.

Note: buttonholes are worked on the right front side for girls, and left front side for boys.

Right front Band

Right side facing, using No 3.75 mm needles and Main Colour, pick up and knit 49sts. Knit 1 row, break off yarn , change to Contrast Colour 2 and knit 2 rows, break off yarn. Change to Contrast Colour 1, K38, yfw K2 tog, K7, yfw K2 tog. Knit a further two rows, then cast off.

Left front Band

With right side facing, using No 3.75mm needles and Main Colour, pick up and knit 49sts. Knit 1 row, break off yarn , change to Contrast Colour 2 and knit 2 rows, break off yarn , change to Contrast Colour 1 and knit 3 rows then cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Thread ribbon through holes on right and left front, carefully sewing in ends. Work cross stitch on bottom of both fronts (if required). Cross stitch along bottom edge of sleeve, and hood.

Join shoulder and sleeve seams then join fronts to back to armhole cast off edge. Sew in sleeves easing into armhole to fit. Fold hood in half lengthwise, sew cast off edge together. Sew hood to jacket, lining up centre of hood with centre back of jacket, ease two seams together when sewing. Sew on buttons.
