Then on Good Friday (March 29 ), we will have the "Service of the Cross" at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary as the Ministers share the "Seven Last Words of Christ." There will be special music by the chancel choir and other musicians. On Saturday (March 30th) we will have our all church Easter Egg hunt at 10:30 a.m. on the East Lawn. On Easter Sunday, there will be FOUR worship services to celebrate the Resurrection: 7:00 a.m. Sunrise, 9:30 a.m. Sanctuary & *The Bridge in Drowota Hall, 11:00 a.m. Sanctuary. This is the greatest day of the year for Christians. Lent is the time when we remember the forty days that Jesus spent alone in the wilderness where he was tempted: "Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished" (Luke 4:1-2). There were three basic temptations that Jesus had to overcome: to turn stones into bread, to throw himself from the temple, and to bow down and worship the devil. On Sunday, I mentioned a book by Henri Nouwen titled The Selfless Way of Christ. In it he talks about these three temptations and how they are still temptations for all of us today. According to Nouwen, we all have three basic temptations: 1) THE TEMPTATION TO BE RELEVANT (Stones into bread) "This temptation touches us at the center of our identity. In a variety of ways, we are made to believe that we are what we produce. This leads to a preoccupation with products, visible results, tangible goods, and progress. The temptation to be relevant is difficult to shake since it is usually not considered a temptation but a call. We make ourselves believe that we are called to be productive, successful, and efficient people whose words and actions show that working for God's Reign is at least as dignified an occupation as working for General Electric, Mobile Oil, or the government. But this
The Spire is published weekly by:

is giving into the temptation to be relevant and respectable in the eyes of the world." (Nouwen 50-51) 2) THE TEMPTATION TO BE SPECTACULAR (Throw yourself from this temple) "It is important to realize that our hunger for the spectacular like our desire to be relevant has very much to do with our search for selfhood. To be a person and to be seen, praised, liked and accepted have become nearly the same for many. Who am I when nobody pays attention, says thanks, or recognizes my work? The more insecure doubtful and lonely we are, the greater our need for popularity and praise. Sadly, this hunger is never satisfied. The more praise we receive, the more we desire. The hunger for human acceptance is like a bottomless barrel. It can never be filled." (Nouwen 56-57) 3) THE TEMPTATION TO BE POWERFUL (I will give you all these kingdoms) "It seem nearly impossible for us to believe that any good can come from powerlessness. In this country of pioneers and self-made people, in which ambition is praised from the first moment we enter school until we enter the competitive world of free enterprise, we cannot imagine that any good can come from giving up power or not desiring it. The all-pervasive conviction in our society is that power is good and that those possessing it can only desire more of it. Power can take many forms: money, connections, fame, intellectual ability, skills. These are all ways to get some sense of security and control, and strengthen the illusion that life is ours to dispose ofThere is almost nothing more difficult to overcome than our desire for power. Power always lusts after greater power precisely because it is an illusion." (Nouwen 61-62) It is easy to see that these temptations are still very much present today for all of us. These are temptations that are very real and ongoing. Lent is a time to wrestle with these things. Growing spiritually is never easy, but it's always worth it. It takes focus, discipline, self-denial, and prayer. Authors like Nouwen give us words upon which we can reflect and pray. It's up to us to take the time to open ourselves up to the spirit of God. "Without the spirit, our busy lives remain boring lives in which the many events of each day remain a series of random incidents and accidents. Without the spirit, our lives remain truly uneventful. But with the Spirit, all that takes place from day to day, week to week, and year to year, can be known and experienced as the concrete manifestation of the Christ-event in time and space." (72-73) Blessings,

Tessarakonta by Thom Schuyler, Youth Director

As I write this we are about half way through the season of Lent that began on (Ash ) Wednesday, February 13. Having been raised in a markedly Protestant system, Lent was never a part of my religious experience. Nonetheless, I was always aware that the season had begun when I saw my Catholic friends show up at school on a specific Thursday in February with ashes still on their foreheads from the night before. There was something quite mysterious about seeing those kids as if they were marked for a special purpose or knew something about God that had been hidden from me. Compared to the no-frills spiritual instruction and unadorned worship experiences of my humble Baptist church, it seemed my Catholic pals were practicing their faith on a whole different plane. I am glad we recognize and celebrate The Lenten Season at Woodmont. It is an ancient practice reaching back to an event that, more or less, marked the official organization of Christ's Church. At The Council of Nicaea (a city in modern day Turkey) in 325 AD, church leaders from across the known world met to establish fundamental tenets of The Christian faith from which we have the profound and still-recited Nicene Creed. During this gathering it was declared that a forty-day period of preparation, leading up to the celebration of Easter, should be instituted throughout The Church. (Thus, the title of this piece, Tessarakonta, meaning "forty" in Greek. If you think I actually knew this before I sat down to compile these thoughts you would be wrong). As I'm sure most of you know, forty days was not an arbitrary period of time; it is a commemoration of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights and afterwards he was famished. (Matthew 4:1-2) As Jesus' forty-day period in the wilderness prepared Him for His ministry, so we are to prepare for the celebration of His resurrection during Lent. Pope Gregory (c. 540-604 AD) added the institution of ashes in the event we call Ash Wednesday. The ashes symbolize repentance (sackcloth and ashes) and mortality ("You are dust, and to dust you will return." Genesis 3:19). Finally, it may be that some of you, like me, have perceived Lent to be a season of inward gazing, self-denial, penitence and other attitudes of the heart and mind they can cause us to be heavily burdened. In fact, Lent is to be a joyful celebration: a time of remembering that we are citizens of God's Kingdom and that we love, worship and serve a Risen Savior! He is risen! He is risen, indeed! Amen. thom

Creative Time with God by Mary Clare Pyron, Parish Nurse

Jeremiah gave me an easel for Christmas. I had never considered myself an artist and had never voluntarily picked up a paintbrush. That being said I have found so much pleasure sitting in front of that easel. Painting at my easel has become therapeutic. It is a time where I am able to slow down and process the day while the canvas slowly changes beneath the paintbrush. It has become a time to pray and be with God. Most of the time when I start painting, my mind is filled with worries, fears, and doubts but as the canvas changes my thoughts begin to move towards God and the things I am thankful forfamily, friends, a warm house, the birds outside the window, the beginning of spring, and God's ever present hand in our lives. Even just a few minutes painting at my easel helps me to feel centered, renewed, and refreshed. ~Mary Clare

Where in the World is Alan Nelson?

If you have attended a morning worship service, even just once, you have, no doubt, seen Alan Nelson! With camera(s) in hand or on a tripod, you have seen Alan mingling around not only the sanctuary, but also classrooms, the Gathering Hall or other parts of the Woodmont campus. Alan spends countless hours around the church capturing events from CWF meetings to Children's Church to 5-Star Dinners, Youth Events, Small Group events and the list goes on and on. He does not limit his work only to events at 3601 Hillsboro Road. He ventures out to restaurants, coffee shops, member's homes (with permission, of course) and other places where WCC small groups may be gathering. In fact, every Monday and every Thursday morning, the church office can expect photos/videos from Sunday events and 5-Star activities. Often photos are supplied by Alan throughout the week for other events. You will see much of his work in The Spire and on the WCC website (woodmontchristian.org). Parents look forward to Alan's photos/videos of their children at worship, in VBS or other church events. Alan is originally from the small town of Wytheville, Virginia but his travels in media communications have taken him all over the world. As a retired Senior Writer/Producer of Administrative Communications with Gaylord Entertainment Company he has traveled 26 countries producing USO celebrity tour specials. He is a Grammy nominee and a television film critic. He has met and interviewed countless big-name celebrities and musicians. If you happen to be an "Alan Facebook friend," you have often seen his reflections of some of those events, as well as, more of his work around Woodmont. In addition, he's a master at capturing sunsets/sunrises, blooming croci and redbud, full moons and a "special spire" in Green Hills. We are grateful for Alan and all of the time and effort he devotes to this church. Woodmont's history and heritage are so important. Alan has taken it upon himself to see that history and heritage is covered in photography and videography. No one asks him to do ithe doesn't get paid a penny for ithe supplies all the equipment needed to do itand he asks for nothing in return. What a gift! Thank you Alan Nelsonyou are a real Woodmont hero...and we appreciate YOU!
