YOUNG ROOFERS ACHIEVE THE PERFECT PITCH USING SIGA NATURAL SLATE

An exclusive new build detached house located in the heart of rural Cheshire not only pays testimony to the use of quality natural slate supplied by SIGA it also celebrates the success of the installation by two young roofers, both with apprenticeship backgrounds.

A challenge for the two individuals - both under the age of 28 who completed the installation single-handedly, the 667.52m2 six bedroom house, complete with a separate garage and garden store, features SIGA 32 500 x 250mm Spanish-sourced slate across its single and double storey sections. The slate also adorns a series of flat roofed and pitched dormers.

Employed by Roof Plus Ltd contractors formerly Colin Jones Roofing Ltd - based in Chester, the two young roofers, aged 21 and 27 respectively, completed the single storey 115m2 roof and two-storey 203m2 roof in just six weeks, using the skills and experience they had gained from other projects.

Having joined Roof Plus Ltd from an early age, both roofers underwent apprenticeship schemes at the company and completed their CITB on-the-job training in roofing and slating. The youngest of the two is due to complete this scheme in the near future, subsequently earning his NVQ Level 2 qualification.

The two men overcame several challenges whilst fitting the roof, including working around a glazed oak link with lantern, providing intricate cutting around skylights and completing the detailing for the flat and pitched lead dormers.

Russel Whitney from Roof Plus Ltd Ltd comments: This project was the perfect opportunity for the two young lads to demonstrate their roofing, tiling and cutting skills across pitched and flat roofed surfaces. It is also testimony to the success of apprenticeship schemes, and demonstrates the high level of skill that can be produced by young roofers.

Russel adds: SIGA 32 slate has been used thousands of times by us, and we have great confidence in the quality of the product. The continuity of supply is superb and, should the owners of the house decide to build an extension, SIGA 32 could be used again and it would not look out of place.

Stuart Base, from SIGA concludes: It is vital that specialist contractors continue to invest in training to ensure a skilled workforce for the future. My congratulations go to Roof Plus Ltd and the two young roofers who can both look forward to a successful career in the roofing industry.

Specified by Calderpeel architects in Altrincham, Cheshire, the SIGA 32 blue/grey natural slate was chosen primarily to blend with the buildings rural location. The house has been designed to maximise the use of traditional building materials, and alongside natural slate, other materials used include stone, brickwork, aluminium windows and doors, together with oak link and bay windows.
