Volunteer profile Personal qualities and attitudes: For application please send a letter of motivation and your curriculum vitae. If its possible we appreciate a visitation before the EVS starts to find out if the work fits to the applicant and if the applicant fits in our team. Otherwise we can make a phonecall to speak about the most important things. Of particular importance is that the volunteer enjoys the work with young people and likes to work in a team. Every working day is different, because of the various needs of the young people. So the volunteer has to be flexible and open minded. Most of the kids, cant speak English and a basic knowledge of German would be helpfully in the daily work. Because our target group is between 12 and 18 years old, therefore it would be advantageous to be older than 20 years. Number of volunteers hosted: 1
Risk Prevention: The volunteer will never work alone at the Youth Point. S/he will work in a team, will get feedback constantly and in case of any questions there will be an pedagocially educated person next to him/her. In addition there will always be a person in charge for organizational needs. The volunteer will receive a list with "Emergency Numbers + Addresses" (doctor, hospital, mentor, pharmacy) and will be told how to find out the doctor and pharmacy on duty on weekends. In case of an accident or illness s/he can contact the projectleader of the youth point any time. The volunteer will also be informed about risk prevention in the organisation (first aid kit, emergency exit etc.). Within the project, the volunteer will have a mentor whom s/he can contact any time.
All our offers provide social competence, should be an integration possibility and give young people the knowledge of being helped and understood. The volunteer would mainly work with young people from 12/13-18 years at the Youth Point and help working with children from 613 years. The Youth Point Don Bosco Siebenhgel is a clearly defined place, where young people of the district meet. 5 days a week young people aged 13-18 years have the possibility to visit our Youth Point. In summertime we also go in parks with games to play and talk with children and youth who dont visit our Youth Point. The team is formed by three educated employees. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday (2 to 8 p.m.), Saturday (3 to 9 p.m.) Our Youth centre Youth Point Don Bosco Siebenhgel is a place where young people can spend their free time, meet friends and have fun without the compulsion to consume anything. Beside the fun factor the youth centre is a place where young people can find help and talk about their problems. The Youth Point consists of a nice coffee area with a small kitchen, one room with 3

computers and internet and one room for girls only. We also have a billiard table, a football table as well as many board and card games. Our visitors can also test their talent at the Playstation with many different games and quiz and their singing talent as sing-star. Our Youth Point becomes an artists studio regularly because our people love being creative. For people who like to do some sport we can offer football, basketball, volleyball and table tennis indoor and outdoor. Main targets of our educational work: Young persons get a comprehensive understanding to develop their own way of life develop responsibility and independence of the single person get to know possible models of living get help for integration find out different interests of what they can do during their free time develop behaviour based on partnership
We try to help young people to be self-determined and self-confident, because we think that this is one of the most important conditions to be open-minded and tolerant towards other individuals.

Project environment
Project environment: Outline the project environment for the suggested voluntary Service, including the local community where the project will take place (e.g. geographical, social and economical environment). If the host placement is located in a live-in community, please include the rules and conditions that apply also for the volunteer. Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw is a national recognised youth organisation which is settled down in the city of Leuven (Heverlee). Leuven is situated in Flandres, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. Dutch will also be the main language used during the service. The city is at about 30km from Brussels (the capital of Belgium), it is the main city in the province of Vlaams Brabant and it is known as a famous university city. Next to the university, Leuven also offers a lot of facilities in different areas: cultural activities, sport, free time activities, big diversity and variety in youth organisations Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw is active in the free time sector of youth work. It has however links with the broader Don Bosco movement in Belgium that consists of organisations that all have a focus on children/ young people, non-formal/formal learning (playground, boarding school, special child care, ngo, schools). It is with the organisations that function in the non-formal learning context (playground, boarding school, ngo, special child care) that Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw works together from time to time. Core elements in this cooperation with these organisations are: training for youth workers cooperation on playgrounds and elaboration of activities/projects elaboration of international projects preparation of volunteers
Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw is located nearby a Don Bosco live-in community where accommodation of the volunteers is possible. This community is a place where several Don Bosco Salesians live
15
together with some students doing higher education. They build out community life by living together, doing activities together and take up engagement in society. When Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw hosts an individual volunteer, he/she will not live in the Salesian community, but Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw will look for a (students)residence nearby the citycentre of Leuven and the service-hosts. In this residence the volunteer will have an own room/studio. This personal room gives the volunteer the possibilty to have a place of their own and to have some privacy. The place will foresee in all practical necessities: shower, kitchen, (kitchen and shower can be for common use, depending on the residence). By not living at the Don Bosco-community, the host organisation wants to stress the difference between the voluntary service and (socialising) free time. The volunteer can enjoy warm meals at Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw and can count on the Salesian community and Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw for practical support. (laundry, internet, ) For the short-term group-EVS, we are cooperating with several of our partnerorganisations in Belgium. We work closely together with the 7 playgrounds that are connected to Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw. At least 5 of these Don Bosco playgrounds receives every summer one or 2 EVSvolunteers. The playgrounds take care of the accomodation, the food and the personal wellbeing of the volunteer. All playgrounds are well informed and prepared by Jeugddienst Don Bosco. The playgrounds organise activities for children and teenagers during the summer. The young people who prepare these activities are all volunteers willing to spend their summer with children and other young animators. Most of these animators already followed a animator course delivered by Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers: Through the EVS-projects, we want the volunteers to achieve 3 main goals. 1. To create chances of acquintance and exchange and to improve European citizenship by bringing Flemish and foreign volunteers together 2. To work voluntary in a Flemish youth work organisation and gain knowledge, skills and attitudes related to the Flemish youth work. 3. To start up an intercultural learning process between the actors involved in the organisation. The young people that will be active as a volunteer in Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw will be involved in national and international activities that are related with children/young people and that focus on youth work and non-formal education, for the short term EVS as well as for the long term EVS. Contents of short-term EVS organized by Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw Hereby a schedule of the last short-term EVS (2011): The schedule starts from Monday, but the volunteers already arrive on the Friday before the service starts. During this first weekend, we organise the on-arrival training. We foresee a languagetraining, an introduction on Flemish youthwork, a preparation session about the volunteers service, getting to know each other games, informal moments and (inter)cultural activities. They always will be accompanied by a Belgian animator. For each age group, there is also one group leader where the volunteers can go to in case of problems. The playground tries to focus on variety, nonformal learning and have a nice time/fun. The playground starts at 9.00am and ends at 17.00pm. Sometimes, playgrounds organise summer-events like parentsday, daytrips, performances, The volunteers will be involved in the preparation and during implementation. Evaluation, preparation, free time activities: Every day, an evaluation takes place with the animators of each age group. There, the volunteers can exchange experiences, feelings, indicate problems and difficulties, After dinner, volunteers can prepare the activities for next day and there is free time or some activities are foreseen for the animators . (training in some youthwork topics, games, intercultural evening, movie night, ) Most playground also provide sleeping-accomodation, so volunteers can stay at the playground at night. This means, 2 big dormitories, one for boys and one for girls. In case there is no possibility to sleep at the playground, we look for host-families nearby where volunteers can stay. During weekends, the volunteers come together in a youth center (mostly nearby). This accomodation are arranged by Jeugddienst don Bosco vzw. Mid-term evaluation and final evaluation weekend: All international volunteers, a team of trainers and a Belgian hostteam come together during these weekends and focus on (intercultural) exchange, evaluation and cultural activities. Contents of long-term EVS organized by Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw When a long term volunteer is active in Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw, he/she will be involved in the several program areas of Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw. These are: external activities, training, youth pastoral and international activities, you can find more information about these areas in the part description of the organization.

The tasks and role of the volunteer will be accompany young students (classes) on reflection days (schoolretraits) organized by Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw: The youth-pastoral area of Jeugddienst Don Bosco organises every week a 2 days-lasting schoolretraits. During these days, the students reflects on certain topics like racism, bullying, equality, The volunteer will lead these days together with the team of youth-pastoral. They will set up a program together and lead the classes in the groupprocesses, activities, discussions, Involvement in projects that are linked with playgrounds: being active on one of the playgrounds during the year and summer. This contains the preparation of activities for children but also the preparation of activities for the local volunteers. Involvement in volunteers activities of Jeugddienst Don Bosco: almost every week, Jeugddienst Don Bosco organises an activity with and for its volunteers. The international volunteer will give new input, set up new activities and prepare with the staffmembers and the volunteers the regular activities. Involvement in international activities The volunteer wil give support during the pre-departure training of our international volunteers and the international networkweekends of Don Bosco Youth-net. This can be logistic support, member of the host-team, training, leading free time activities, Involvement in the setting up of training for young people: in the area of training, Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw organises several training courses for young animators. (mostly during Christmas and Eastern break). The volunteer will be part of the team of trainers and give support and new input during the trainingcourses. Throughout the whole service, the volunteer will be in contact with young people, children and other volunteers. The activities where he/she will be involved are all activities focussed on non-formal education and youth work.
All the EVS-projects (short term and long term) include different kind of learning opportunities: By being active as a volunteer in the Flemish youth work, the volunteer will acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes related to this kind of youth work. o The volunteer will accompany children and young people. o The volunteers will set up activities for the children and young people. o The volunteer will cope with the living world of the young people and the children. o The volunteer will lead groups and animate them. By being active as a volunteer in a Flemish youth work organisation, the volunteer will have to work together with native volunteers. By attending meetings with a group of volunteers, the volunteer will acquire skills concerning team work: programming, planning, reflection, evaluation, By living in Belgium and meet people living here, the volunteer will gain knowledge and attitudes about different aspects of the life and the culture in Belgium. By working together with Belgian volunteers, the EVS-volunteers will have an intercultural experience on European level. The volunteer will get acquainted with other young people within the broader Don Bosco world in Belgium. By being confronted with elements that are linked with being alone for a longer time in a foreign country, the volunteer will gain skills and attitudes to cope with the new situation and as a consequence will grow as a person.

Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: As host-organisation for Individual and group-EVS we look for volunteers who : - Are at least 18years old Are interested in doing youth work Have a good basic knowledge of English language. Are enthusiastic, open and interested in meeting like-minded young people from another country . For the recruitment process, the different actors involved in the EVS project (sending and host organisation, volunteer) work together. The sending and the host organisation promote the EVS project. When there is an interested candidate, the volunteer receives the necessary information about the project in Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw and the elements of their task. (their role and the content of the service, the structure and the working methods, the program, ) The candidate will have a meeting with the sending organisation. The candidate receives a questionnaire to fill in. This document gives an overview of the personal details and motivation of the candidate. On the basic of this questionnaire, the sending and coordinating organisation get important information to decide on the matching between the profile and the candidate. After consultation between sending and hosting organisation, the participant will be selected. The selection will be done by the staffmember international projects of Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw and the general coordinator of Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw . We take at look at which learning opportunities there can be in the period the volunteer wants to come. If there are enough tasks, learning opportunities and enough contact moments with local volunteers and local youth are possible, we can get the volunteer involved. Once the volunteer is selected, he/she will be briefed about the decision and will receive the needed information to prepare themselves. (on content and on practical elements). The sending organisations that cooperate in this projects preferably also focusses on working with young people. Number of volunteers hosted: For individual EVS: we can host maximum one volunteer at the same time. For Group EVS: we can host maximum 12 volunteer at the same time. The playgrounds receive during the project 2 volunteers of the same country.
Risk prevention, protection and safety: To make the project as valuable as possible, we create a safe environment in which the volunteer can be her/himself and have respect for each other. For this we go back to the pedagogical model of our organisation in which some elementary aspects are written down. The educational system of our organisation is identified as the preventive system. Within this system, the concept of assistance is important. Within assistance, the youth worker should have eye for the group as for the individual, focusing on those young that need the most attention, without forgetting about the group. The people accompanying the volunteer (youth worker, educator, mentor, ) will work out of this system, focussing on the 3 key elements of assistance: Attendance: attendance means to be actively present: the youth worker is among people and takes part in their daily life, during games and during moments of reflection. However, active attendance is not sufficient; the attitude is also important in this. Often small things matter, such as to remember someones name to approach people and show interest.
19
Reason: Don Bosco youth workers/educators associate with young people in reason. This means for instance that they do not behave in an authoritative manner and do not decide on any overly harsh rules or sanctions. It also means that they do not arouse false hopes, but indicate what they think is acceptable and why. They should approach young people with reason, explain clearly their motives and plans, be confident that young people can be reasonable and are able to bear responsibility themselves and respect a young person and his or her opinion, even when it is a different one. Encouragement: one of the major tasks of a Don Bosco youth worker is to encourage young people in their on-going development. This can be done by offering dynamic and creative programmes, or by offering a frame for a programme that the young complete themselves. Delegating responsibility as much as much as possible , adapted to age and skills is an important aspect of encouragement. In this way, you show a young person that you trust him.

The volunteer will be working directly with children and youth under the guidance of the professional workers. Project environment: Pilsen is a country capital situated about 100km southwest of the Czech capital Prague. It is the cultural, industrial, academic, and athletic centre of the region and has around 190.000 inhabitants. In the city there are theatres, cinemas, stadiums, a university and many other schools. Therefore, Pilsen offers a great variety of cultural opportunities for volunteers. More information: http://www.plzen.eu/ The volunteers live in a safe complex with an entrance of their own. They live in a two-bed room with equipment and the possibility to cook. In the kitchen there is the common equipment: dishes, a cooker, a refrigerator, a microwave, a washing machine. We have very good experience with lodging of two(2) volunteers in the same room, since they have the opportunity to learn from each other and practice tolerance for each other, since tolerance is very important part of working the field. They should be able to create intimate contact with the mentor and to tackle problems (either personal or with clients) in due time. Up to now we never encountered any problem with this type of arrangement. Our accommodations are compatible to lodging in other countries. The volunteers can be totally independent, but naturally they have to look after up their room themselves. Pocket money and, depending on the agreement with the volunteer, money for food are paid to them monthly. The volunteers room is about 15 minutes from TOTEM's main office in Pilsen -Lobzy. This is where also the main activities of the volunteers are taking place, such as conversation and computer classes for the elderly, as well as the parent club. TOTEM's second building is located near the Centre of the Third Age (one of TOTEM's current projects) which is where the academy for the elderly and other leisure activities are located. During the whole project, a mentor, a project leader and professional contact persons in the respective organizations will be available to the volunteers. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers: Our experiences from the last years is that not only the volunteers learn from us but also we profit a lot from these motivated international volunteers who stay with us. The volunteers have many
37
possibities to get involved in different work fields and gain new experiences. On the other hand they always bring to us their individual and cultural imprint which enrichens our work a lot. By questioning operations and procedures we always have to reflect and rethink our way of working and operating. Seeing it from this point of view the cooperation is a win- win situation for both sides. At the beginning of the service the volunteer and tutor meet and plan possible key aspects and activities according to the wishes and experiences of the volunteer. Besides the work at our 2 main houses or as a co-worker for activities within the youth education program, the volunteers also have the possibility to work at an all- day primary school. In the afternoon there are lots of activites with different programs for children and teenagers. Depending on their personal interest the volunteers can decide to support the course instructor in musical or creative activities. In the past we had volunteers who offered a course to learn german, english, or french for senior citizens or for children. The volunteer will spend about 20 % of his time in other projects or organizations of his choice, and 80 % working in the offices and main projects of Totem. Another major aspect is the work in the main office, where the volunteers work on small projects or assignments. It also gives them the opportunity to work closely with other employees there. Our volunteers often have creative tasks like designing flyers for courses, trips or tickets and posters for events. Many of our volunteers also use the opportunity to organise an evening to present something about their home country with pictures of the scenery, music or food specialities. It is one of our approaches to inform other people. There are many opportunities in our organisation for the volunteers to be creative as we are only a small organisation with few bureaucratic borders. The volunteers will work in two fields - in the two houses of TOTEM: 1. In the centre for mixed generations the volunteer can work together with czech volunteers or employees of TOTEM. They can help to prepare PC-courses for the elderly, support parent-children courses and provide senior education courses english, german and french conversation The main goal for the centre is to bring different people together. Whatever the personal and professional skills of the volunteer are, he/she can make us of them during the projects in the organization. 2. Social group work: The volunteer will participate in a long-term cooperation with social organizations with specific programs. Volunteers can assist these organizations in various activities, ranging from administrative tasks, personal or group assistance with clients, environmental work, to doing handicrafts with certain target groups. There is a choice of several organizations: MotA1l a center for leisure activities for disabled small children. Volunteers will learn to approach the work with young children from a creative perspective while cooperating with trained professionals. Salesian Center It's a day center for children and adolescents. Volunteers participate in a variety of activities and workshops both in the club called Airship (for adolescents) and a second one called Balloon( for children). Volunteers therefore assist mainly in sporting activities or other leisure activities. In addition it is also possible to take part in events and trips during the weekend and organized holiday trips (summer camps) outside the city. This organization is ideal for the realization of the smaller projects in the second half of EVS. The project greatly affects the volunteers, as they can expand their adaptability and autonomy, experiencing the European dimension with all its possibilities. The volunteers have the opportunity to contribute actively in a community, to gain many new skills, and to learn how to deal with stress and conflict situations.

The possibility and importance of obtaining this document for the volunteer is taken very serious by our organization and we are familiar with its meaning and benefit for the volunteers. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: The volunteer placement will be published in the internet and spread by the contact of the network of the supporting organization. We are ready to work with all kinds of sending organizations. The volunteer will take part in a language course and we will help him in every kind of way to integrate in him our community. During the voluntary service the volunteers know who is assigned to them as mentor or tutor within the given project. They also know their rights and duties and can get in contact with the employees of the partner organizations, the sending organization or the national agency. The volunteers have the emergency numbers of the sending and hosting organizations, the partner organizations and their insurance company. At the orientation training prior to the start of their service they are once more informed about how to handle crises and difficulties, and who to contact during the occurrence of an emergency or when facing difficulties. Furthermore, the volunteers meet other volunteers during the trainings run by the Czech National Agency, seminars and further meetings and so they can establish networks, in which they can help and support each other.

Project environment: The project is situated in a retreat house, which is based in a former Benedictine monastery building. The history of the place goes back to 739. In 1930 a new period starts: The Salesians of Don Bosco purchase the monastery. The congregation started to restore the buildings, saving them from the decadence and gave an input to a "renaissance"of the cultural life. The retreat house Aktionszentrum was grounded in 1969 and offers social and spiritual development to young people. The monastery is located in a village called Benediktbeuern with around 4000 inhabitants around 60 km south of Munich towards the Alps. The town is easy to reach by train from Munich. There is a train connection every hour in both directions. A lot of tourists visi this region, which offers many possibilities for leisure time activities (walking, cycling, swimming). In the monastery there are two colleges (University of applied sciences of social work and university of philosophy and theology) with around 600 students for social work, philosophy and theology. This makes the place itsself a very young place with a lot of social life, where young people easily can step in. The volunteer will have an own area, with a single room based in a community with other volunteers. Food is provided by the Aktionszentrum. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers: The retreat house has two major tasks: one is the work with groups of young people who come to the Aktionszentrum to work on their personal and social skills. Here the volunteer can get in contact with German young people, can do indoor climbing, offer leisure time programme. An important point in the cooperation with international volunteers is the intercultural exchange: Gemran young people can meet the volunteer and exchange experiences (on topic like: intercultural learning, Youth in Europe). The volunteer has got the possibility to join seminars for international voluntary service in order to exchange experiences with other volunteers. The volunteer will also have to do some practical work in the youth centre: support in the central office, weekly meetings with the house manager, reception service for young people, guided tours for groups in the youth centre. All the activities are planned week by week according to the skills and expectations of each volunteer.
47
Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: Every young person is welcome who is open to other young people. A basic knowledge of German would be really helpful to start from the beginning in participating in the educational activities. Any skills in the area of sport, music, arts and crafts or experience in youth work will be very welcome. There should be an openness to work in a centre which has a Christian background. Normally we use to look for volunteers in cooperation with our partners in Europa. If young people are interested they contact their sending organisations. After this they send an application and if possible, we arrange a meeting to get to know each other. We select the volunteers together with our partner organisation. Number of volunteers hosted: 2 Special needs The Aktionszentrum is open for volunteers with fewer opportunities. In particualr we support the participation of young people with low education and coming from difficult social backgrounds. A team of social workers (8 staff members) can offer a personal support during the EVS experience. Risk prevention, protection and safety: The Aktionszentrum has an own child and staff protection system, which can be sent to everybody who is interested. A special training at the beginning of the volunteering will ensure that everybody knows the rules and regulations of the house and the area (fire, first aid). The volunteer will live in a safe environment and will have a personal mentor. The hosting organisation and the sending organisation will be regularly in contact to prevent and discuss possible problems. We think that good partnerships are one of the most important requirements in organising voluntary services. We are not planning of hosting young volunteers between 16 and 17.

Project environment: The project is located in Kln/Cologne. With one million inhabitants Cologne is the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, the largest German Federal State. Twenty million people live within one hour's drive from Cologne. The dynamic Rhine-Ruhr region is one of the central locations in Europe for industry, trade, the economy, science and research. In the last decade Cologne has developed from a classical industrial centre into the modern service centre in western Germany. Today Cologne is associated primarily with the media, tradefairs and culture, in addition to chemicals and mechanical and electro-engineering. Cologne is Germany's leading media metropolis, a tradefair venue of world renowned and cultural centre. In addition, the city also boasts a highly modernised and innovative industrial sector with a balanced sectoral structure and an ideal mix of small and medium-sized companies. Commanding a vast body of know-how, Cologne's craft and trades sectors have successfully specialised in many areas. As an industrial centre, Cologne has also benefited from its geographical location: Within a radius of just 300 km over 40% of the EU's total domestic social product are generated. With its excellent traffic connections and infrastructure, Cologne is the main traffic hub of the west: Ten main axes of the European motorway network converge on Cologne's orbital motorway circling the city. Cologne's main railway station is also regarded as one of the key rail junction in Europe. And flights from the regions two major airports Cologne/Bonn and Dsseldorf set course to over 200 destinations worldwide. Cologne's Rhine ports are among Germany's largest inland ports. Since the Medieval times Cologne has been a key commercial and tradefair centre. 25 of the world's largest industrial tradefairs are staged at Cologne's tradefair centre, the KlnMesse. Cologne boasts a great variety of municipal and private museums, which is their various ways reflect the 2000-year history of the city. The Cologne Philharmonic is celebrated as one of the most prestigious concerts hall in Europe, and the city houses over 100 art galleries. Over one quarter of all German television programs are produced in Cologne and there are more TV and radio stations located here than in any other German city. Numerous telecommunications companies provide the logistic basis for the expanding service sector and an innovative research network. With the highest student population and the oldest municipal university in Germany, Cologne is the most popular city in which to study. Similarly, with its engineering centre, Cologne's Technical

University is the largest of its kind in Germany. The Sports Academy and the Art Academy of Media Arts also enjoy a worldwide reputation. More information can be found under www.koeln.de Proposed activities for EVS volunteers: The following areas of work are possible: co-operation in the educational open area (table football, billiards, board games, discussions) 60% free activities with children and youth (making things, cooking, practicing dances etc) 10% organizing sports projects (football tournaments, basketball competitions, table tennis, hockey, chess etc) 10% further independent running of multimedia projects (making films, digital photo stories, computer training etc) 10% A typical day in the Don Bosco Club: At 12.30 the volunteer arrives at the club and can have their lunch in the bistro. At 13.00 all members of staff meet in a team meeting which we call bertrag (carried over). Here important events of the previous day are discussed, important decisions made and the current day planned (everyone is given an area of responsibility which means a space where they have responsibility - sports room, computer room, making things room). In these rooms they can then provide an offer with the children and youth. After the meeting each member of staff has enough time to prepare their plans. At two o'clock the children (6-15) come to the club and make use of the offers. The volunteer can come into contact with the children through play or activities. Through discussion they can provide attitudes to life and listen to fears and needs of the children. With the help of the team they can respond appropriately. At 17.45 the children leave the house and we tidy up. Between 18 and 18.30 we have a break. From 18.30 the 12-21 year old youth visit us. Contact here is made through direct conversations. Sometimes the medium of games or activities (billiards, table football, table tennis, board games) are needed. At 21.00 the youth also leave the club and the team tidies up (brushing, emptying bins etc). The day ends at 21.15 with a prayer. A typical week in the Don Bosco Club: Monday-Friday is as described. One evening a week is free (on agreement). Every two weeks Sunday evening is working time from 18-21.30 as the Don Bosco Club is then open to young people. Once a week is an exchange discussion for the people doing practical training and volunteers. After a short working in phase the volunteer can introduce an autonomous project. The volunteer will work in the open area in the first three weeks and the creative and sports area will slowly be added to this. A European volunteer opens up horizons for our youth and children. They learn what other countries and cultures are like without consciously noticing. European thought becomes not only an abstract thought, but an everyday matter for the children. They are used to multicultural life, but as the volunteer has grown up in another country they do bring other basic prerequisites and experiences with them. The fact that a European volunteer is in an establishment normally means that English is used and this becomes normal for the children and youth. I believe this also to be an advantage. Through the different activities of the children and youth in the area the volunteer is also involved in this area. There are many contacts in the Mlheim district beginning with the neighbouring junior

school to the different youth institutions, clubs and private associations. For example once a year there is a competition for music groups in Mlheim and there are different competitions in which sports teams can take part. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: Skills: Age: 18-30/ gender: not important/ interest and enjoyment in co-operating with children and youth/ area of interest: sport and or media (photo, film, internet, computer). Cooperations with partnerorganisations: The European Voluntary Service is connected with city twinning. Therefore applicants and sending organisations from the cities that are twinned with Klns are prefered: Barcelona (Spain), Cluj Napoca (Romania), Cork (Ireland), Istanbul (Turkey), Katowice (Poland), Lille (France), Liverpool (Grobritannien), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Thessaloniki (Greece) und Tel Aviv (Israel). Number of volunteers hosted: 1 Risk prevention, protection and safety: The organization, where young volunteers are working, secures, that volunteers will be introduced into their fields of work and that they find enough support to integrate well into the respective systems. The organization provides continuous monitoring, including easy access to the contact person (Tutor), regular dialog with the volunteers, in which the options for personal development and the interests of the volunteer are being discussed. The organization opens their regular educational programs of the employees for the volunteers. At the end of a voluntary service, the organization finds an appropriate form to bid farewell to the volunteer and writes a qualified letter of reference. Mentors: The Klner Feiwilligen Agentur acquires Mentors who accompany the volunteers. Mentors are required to take on following responsibilities: serve as personal guide of the volunteer outside their working field support volunteers with formal necessities at the beginning of their service (i.e. registry office of the city, office for foreigners, open bank account, select a language program) offer basic orientation in Cologne and provide for social contacts recognize and appreciate the growing abilities of the volunteer in their work and open discussion on future perspectives for career training in their home countries. Support in volunteeer-management:: Employees of the Cologne Voluntary Agency visit the volunteers at least once in their service time in the respective organization. Motives and content: talks with the Tutor in the organization/placement, in which the voluntary service can be considered from three different perspectives: the volunteer, the organization, the agency Investigate if all the conditions of the voluntary service are being fulfilled. Support in the solution of problems. Once a year the Cologne Volunteer Center invites all hosting projects to a meeting for the exchange of experience and for improving the volunteer-management. Regularly the Cologne Volunteer Center offers training in volunteer-management (four halve days), where all hosting projects are invited.

Project environment: Living in the region around Lake Constance means living where others go on holiday to. The region is situated in the border triangle of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and between Lake Constance and the Alps. The residential homes of the St Gallus Hilfe are situated in the countryside in the village of Hegenberg, next to Meckenbeuren. The trainstation of Hegenberg lies in a distance of 4 km, the airport of Friedrichshafen about 6 km. The next towns are Tettnang with about 18.000 inhabitants and Ravensburg with about 50.000.Both towns can easily be reached in less than half an hour ,public busses leave directly from the St Gallus Stiftung. Ravensburg offers a medieval town centre, loads of cafes, shops and a lively student life with pubx and clubs. Volunteers will live in a flat inside the residential homes of the St Gallus Hilfe. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers: Children and young people with disabilities usually need support in their organisation of their spare time. Usually there is not enough staff in homes to offer interesting and adequate activities. Above all young people with disability feel the same needs as all other young people: they want to hang out with friends and be part of a group, instead of staying home with their parents, which they feel dependent off. The contact with a young volunteer can satisfy this need and offers great possibilities to a young person with disability. The programm Happy Hours wants to offer with the help of the volunteers greater freedom and more possibilities in the organisation of their free time. The volunteer will work with the team of a residential group, which normally is made up by three or four experienced members and two to three helpers and attends to eight childern or young people.Within this team the volunteers receive personal and professional guidance. The volunteers will work with the youngsters after school and sometimes on weekends and offer activities outside the St Gallus-Hilfe. The volunteers have the possibility to get to know the situation of people with disabilities in Germany. In their everyday life they can explore their abilities in contact and communication with young people with disabilities and develop a sensitivity for the social and spatial barriers in the life of children and youngsters with disability.
57
The volunteers can connect their own recreational activities with those of handicapped people and learn how to actively devise, plan and implement own ideas. They take over the responsibility to represent in the interests of the children and youngsters and learn to put those interests into the fore when offering recreational activities. The volunteers will not only work in the teams of the residential groups, but also work in a team with other volunteers the same age as them. Thus, they can get into contact with young people outside the St Gallus Hilfe as well. The St Gallus Hilfe offers adequate accomodation in form of a personal appartment on the grounds of the St Gallus Hilfe and if wished, can also offer meals. The volunteers will attend a language course in Ravensburg and attend the necessary seminars of an EVS. Additionally they will attend the supporting programme for the German volunteers. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: The volunteers should be able and willing to work with children and young people with disabilities and be interested to organise activities for their spare time. Experience in working with disabled people is helpful, but not conditional. Number of volunteers hosted: 2 Special needs (if applicable) The St Gallus Hilfe can host volunteers with fewer opportunities due to financial, cultural or geographical reasons. The St Gallus Hilfe can support a volunteer with this kind of fewer opportunities in form of the tutor and of the manager of the St Gallus Hilfe. Additionally, the St Gallus Hilfe is inside the network of its coordinating organisation which is closely connected with supporting organisations and experts. Risk prevention, protection and safety: The volunteers will live in an appartment on the grounds of the St Gallus Hilfe and will thus have contact persons also in their free time. The volunteers will have a tutor, who is their first person of contact and who will accompany the volunteers throughout their service. Above all in the beginning he will suport the volunteers and introduce them to life in Germany. Possible problems and irritation will be talked about immediately and it will be tried to solve all problems through talking. Additionally, there are several trained employees at the St. Gallus Hilfe that can support the volunteers. To prevent irritations in working with disabled young people, the volunteers will be thoroughly informed about their tasks before their service starts and during their service they will work with trained and experienced staff. The volunteers will never work alone. Of course the volunteers are insured over axa.

Project environment
The voluntary activities proposed here is the same proposed in our 2 previous manifestation of interest (3 and 6 years ago) and performed by our former volunteers: collaboration with the staff of VKE with the educational and recreational activities for local communities' children. The central office of VKE is located in the city of Bolzano, a city with about 100.000 inhabitants. Bolzano district (provincia) has about 450.000 inhabitants and is part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, Northern Italy. The region is one of the richest in Italy, being the city one with the highest quality of life of the country. There are three different languages spoken in Bolzanos region: Italian (26,47%), German (69,15%) and Ladin (4, 37%). In fact, Bolzano is a unique city in its type, meaning a meeting point between two of major cultures in Europe: the Mediterranean and middle European one. In this reality, our volunteers will experiment that all cultures should be respected in a similar manner and living together is possible. It's a multilingual and very dynamic environment. Bolzano is situated 265 meters upon the sea level alongside the Brennero connection, in the hearth of the Dolomites region of Alto Adige. The site is reachable with any mean of transportation, highway, train, plane, and is situated among the best known European path which connect the Costanza lake to Venice. On the geographical point of view Bolzano benefit of a lucky position, in front of Dolomites and close to the meeting point between the Talvera and Isarco rivers, in a basin protected from the winds and sunny during all the day and the year long. The meteorologist attributes to Bolzano the prize for the coldest city in Italy, the average year temperature varies between 16,6 and 6 degrees, but sun shines in average 300 days per year and summers are quite hot. Bolzano's historical center is rich of tradition, history and art, and also the core business of the city: Via Portici, Piazza Walther, Corso Libert: with few steps is possible to cross the thousand years old history of a city born for trade and business. The volunteers and EVS volunteers are placed in accommodation generally in student residences in the city.

The structures we use are usually the "Studentinnenheim der Marienschule" (House for students of St. Mary School - see http://www.pg.bz.it/144d173.html), the boarding of the Kolping House (see http://www.kolpingbozen.it/ baukasten/en/Kolpinghaus-bozen/convitto.html) or, in the third measure, the Salesian boarding Rainerum (see http://www.rainerum.it/convitto/camere.php) . In all structures, the volunteers have available single room and internet. In the house Kolping rooms are in an apartment. The kitchen is shared with other guests on the floor of the house. The volunteers will not face any rules or conditions different from what its expected inside of the European Union. They will have the chance to learn about and experiment all the activities developed by VKE in the district territory (provincia). During the activities, the volunteers will always be supported by their mentor, as well as their work supervisors and the EVS coordinator of the Association InCo (which not only support us with the bureaucratic and administrative procedures but it's also of great support in the management of international partners, preparation and support of volunteers). The competences and attitudes we expect the volunteer to acquire during the service are the followings: inter-cultural sensitiveness and knowledge in inter-cultural communication competences in the organization and coordination of activities and projects abilities in leading and coordinating groups knowledge about new social-cultural realities which are different from their own one possibility to discover and develop new own professional competences through a voluntary service in a non-profit organization competences concerning of a social useful work with children and youngsters sensitiveness concerning the rights of the children improvement of abilities in the field of animation and promotion of recreational activities (freetime activities but also pedagogical and educational ones) personal growth: independence, self-confidence etc. Volunteers will have the opportunity to acquire these skills through the activities that take place in the main office of VKE as well as in regional VKE projects (Sezioni VKE) distributed over the province. The activities mainly include the organization and promotion of recreational and educational activities. During the activities developed - and after a integration period - the volunteers will have the possibility to organize and develop small own personal projects which could be related to their own culture, for example, or to aspects related with intercultural communication and/or any other topic they think could be appropriated. In this way, the volunteers could develop their own initiatives in a more independent way, staying in any case under the supervision of VKE's staff. Volunteers will learn to work autonomously and to rely on their own capacities and knowledge, developing selfconfidence. The opportunity of being away from their own family and usual friends, having to learn a different language to communicate and facing a different reality, will give them the possibility to reflect, to open their minds to new realities and to grow up as an individual. The main role of the volunteer is to collaborate with the staff of the VKE, supporting the regular activities proposed to children in the different spaces for games and proposing new recreational and entertainment options. The volunteer will never be alone carrying out the activities and should never be forced to do something s/he doesnt want to. S/he will be there as VOLUNTEER therefore, s/he will not substitute the place of the educators or regular staff. After experiencing a little bit about each VKEs activities, the volunteers will be able to choose the activities they would like to carry out. They will have the chance to plan together with VKEs staff

and the mentor a weekly timetable, taking into consideration their interests and capacities. The timetable, the activities and the project the volunteer will be integrated (like the Spielbus or the summer camps). They can be changed during the service taking into consideration punctual needs of the organization as well as the volunteers' well-being. The timetables of the different projects are the followings: VKE-Spielhaus/Casa Gioco (game center) opening hours o Morning - 9.00-12.00 o Afternoon - 15.00.18.00 (16:00-19:00 in July and August) VKE-Spielbus/Ludobus o Morning 9.30 11.30 (active during school-break) o Midday 13.00 14.30 (active during school-break) o Afternoon 14.30 18.30 (game actions during the week) o Continuous working time at the game actions during the weekend. VKE-children holidays o Continuous working time: 9.00-17.00 from Monday to Friday in the months of June, July, August, September o At some places only in the morning (8.00-12.00) or in the afternoon (14.00-18.00). VKE-special actions o Citt dei ragazzi MiniBZ during the second half of June Bolzano o Continuous working time 10.00-18.00 from Monday to Friday.
According to the capacities and personal interests of the volunteer, s/he will be asked to organize her/his own entertainment projects (alone or together with the volunteers of the Italian and German National Civil Service). Creative ideas and contributes of the volunteer are very welcome. They will be evaluated and integrated, if possible, in the activities organized for the children and youth. Volunteers could, for example, organize sport activities, music workshops, theater, workshop, a circus, dancing activities or propose the children typical games of her/his country. Mainly in the game centers, the volunteers can organize workshops about their own culture, evenings with music or typical dances or offer a language course to the children and their parents etc. The tasks of the volunteers could be resumed as the following: participation at the organization and at the realization of the games with the "Spielbus/Ludobus" and in the game centers (Spielhaus/Centri Giochi) support in the organization and development of summer centers organization and realization of workshops concerning their own country, for example about a typical day of a child in the own country, concerning Europe etc. organization of inter-cultural activities together with the other volunteers to raise awareness about the rights to play of young people participation in the team-meetings and the monthly supervision with the other volunteers promotion of new activities and projects connected to the voluntary service, as for example the presentation of the possibility to do an European Voluntary Service to the young people of the Province of Bolzano.
We would like to underline that the volunteer will have a particular role in our team. They will participate in general activities in collaboration with the education team, but their main role is to enrich the offer of activities with their presence, with new ideas and projects, integrating activities which are connected to their own culture, to the aspect of intercultural dimension and to the living together of people with different cultural backgrounds. The team of the VKE is very open towards
67
topics concerning interculturality seen that the members, volunteers, employees and users belong to the three ethical groups of the Province (Italian, German and Ladin). Our project is open to every major young person who has a special interest and sensibility to children and could bring new energy and enthusiasm to VKE, helping to improve the life quality of those children and enriching the free-time/cultural activities. Once that the volunteers will be permanently in contact with children, they should have an appropriate behavior towards children; being open to play games and different kind of activities besides having interpersonal relations. Initiative and creativeness are also important characteristics. It's essential that the volunteer will be available to be integrated in a multilingual environment: Italian and German are the official languages in the region and those used during the activities (from children and staff). The previous knowledge of at least one of them (Italian or German) could be an advantage to the volunteer him/herself (facilitating his/her integration otherwise, s/he would have to face 2 foreign languages at the same time). The recruitment: The recruitment process is done together with InCo Association which takes charge of dissemination of volunteering opportunities with our organization. If we receive specific requests, we forward them to InCo which proceeds with the selection according to the principles of transparency and equal opportunities. The selection period is agreed together and released over the internet (website, Facebook, mailing lists, newsletters). InCo makes a pre-selection taking into account all the young people who contact us or them via e-mail or through a Sending Organization. During the preselection, the motivation of the candidate-volunteers, their interest in the theme of the project and voluntary work in general are evaluated (through a study of their curriculum vitae and letter of motivation). InCo always tries to keep a gender and geographic balance between the whole volunteers group present in the VKE, considering not only the applicants, but also the already existing group. Usually, an evaluation of the Sending Organization is also requested in order to extra check the match between motivation and learning opportunities. The final decision on the selection of volunteers is taken by the Director responsible for the volunteers of the VKE, Mr. Pompermaier, following a decision of the provincial executive board of VKE. If necessary, a telephone interview is also done. VKE and InCo are open to work with any Sending Organization from any country. The most important thing for us is that the SO prepares and supports the volunteers as its predicted by the Youth in Action Program, respecting the deadlines and agreements set, and being collaborative in case of an emergency or crises. Seen that currently VKE counts with the support of young volunteers from the Italian and German Civil Services (who also has to be followed and supported), usually we host only 2 volunteer from the EVS The EVS Activity doesnt put our volunteers in any kind of dangerous or risky situation. Volunteers will be instructed how to behave in an eventual (and improbable) case of emergency during the service as well as inside the accommodation. During the service, regular visits will be organized in which the mentor will be able to verify the corresponding actions asked and foreseen. That is an occasion for the volunteers to show and discuss eventually problems and difficulties in this case, open communication will be encouraged, facing the situation in an early stage to improve the service and the permanence of the volunteer in the host organization. VKE's mentor has also the possibility to address himself to the directive board, with the work supervisor and EVS coordinator of InCo in order to intervene on time and to discuss about the problem.
68
Italy
Furthermore, the EVS coordinator of InCo will arrange regular meetings with the volunteers in order to verify the course of the project, if volunteers are performing the activities agreed and if they feel themselves appreciated and welcome. We are convinced that the meeting with a person who is not involved in the hosting project could facilitate the dialogue about hypothetical problems or difficulties. In the case of difficulties and problems regarding the practical activities, Mr. Pompermaier will immediately organize a meeting with the volunteer and her/his work supervisor in order to face the problem in the very beginning. Together, we will try to understand the reasons of the problem and to find an appropriate solution, counting also with the support and help of InCo. In an eventual emergency situation, the partners will be contacted and together we will give the proper support to volunteer's need. It's not foreseen the participation of under-aged volunteers.

programs and the volunteer members elected by the directive board. The staff is divided in: director (1), coordinators (2), secretary (1), educators (12) and cleaning agent (2). The activities of VKE are funded specially through public contributions: at the provincial level through the central office of VKE and at municipal level through the local groups (Sezioni). VKE also receives contributions from banks, sponsors and last but not least, by its members! Besides that, VKE collected financial resources thanks to the projects and the occasional tasks (lectures, advice and above all entertaining initiatives) VKE is a legal recognized body registered in the Provincial Voluntary Bodies (registro provinciale degli enti di volontariato); it's a non-profit organization with social utility (in Italy, ONLUS); it's associated with Sdtiroler Jugenring (Federation of German language's youth associations), with N.E.T.Z. (federation of centers and meeting places young people in South Tyrol) and also to ALI per giocare - Association of Italian ludobus and game rooms; VKE is also associated with Banca Etica.

Project environment
The voluntary activity proposed here is the same proposed in our previous manifestations of interest and performed by our former volunteers: collaboration with the staff of the nursing homes for elders in the entertainment sector. The environment in which the volunteers will be integrated is the nursing homes for elders. They will always be in touch with the guests, their families and the staff of ASSB. One of the most important characteristics in those houses is the adaptation to the reality and condition of the elders: it's essential to be patient, calm and sensible. The nursing homes of ASSB are all located in the city of Bolzano, a city with about 105.000 inhabitants. Bolzano district has about 500.000 inhabitants and is part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, situated in Northern Italy. There are three different languages spoken in Bolzanos region: Italian (26,47%), German (69,15%) and Ladin (4, 37%). The volunteers will not face any rules or conditions different from what its expected inside of the European Union. The most particular condition of the working environment is the local bilingualism and the inter-generational activity. Inside of the nursing homes structure, the volunteers will always be supported by their work supervisors, as well as the other staff members, the direction of the

house and their mentor (Ms. Maniezzo). Besides that, the volunteers can also count with the support of InCo which organizes at least 2 personal meetings with them (in the beginning and end of the service). We believe that meeting with someone outside of the organization could allow the volunteers to speak more openly about eventual problems or difficulties. The straight collaboration with InCo and the closeness of Bolzzano and Trento allow us to follow the volunteers in a complementary and complete way, developing project (until the moment) with very positive results. The competences and attitudes we expect the volunteers to acquire are the followings: bigger intercultural sensitiveness and knowledge in intercultural communication European awareness knowledge about new socio-cultural realities which are different from their own one possibility to discover and develop new professional competences development of an useful social work improvement of competences concerning the assistance and entertainment activities for elderly development of their own small project and initiatives improvement of the capacity to work in group improvement of the language skills (Italian and/or German) personal growth: independence, self-confidence etc. The volunteers will get the possibility to acquire these competences through the activities they will carry out at the hosting organization. The service will consist mainly in helping the staff of the nursing homes to develop the everyday life activities and the organization of recreational and cultural activities. Volunteers will constantly have the support of the staff members. The work supervisors should explain and discuss with them the objectives of every single actions, the development and expected result, teaching to the volunteers what is needed to do this kind of social work in the proper way. By performing the above activities, the volunteers will participate actively in the life of the nursing home in close contact with the elderly so that they can enjoy the presence and support of young volunteers who on the other hand - will learn to relate with the elders in need of care and support, gaining a valuable experience in the personal and professional point of view and with a growing autonomy and responsibility. During the service, the volunteers will have the possibility to organize and carry out their own projects which could involve the representation of their own culture, taking into consideration also aspect of intercultural communication, and any other argument they consider appropriated. Once they gain confidence with the working environment, the volunteers could develop their own projects more independently, being in any case under the supervision of the staff of the house. The volunteers will learn to work autonomously and to rely on their capacities and knowledge, developing selfconfidence. Besides that, the opportunity of being abroad, without the family and usual friends, using a diverse language and facing a different reality will give them the chance to reflect, to open their mind and to grow up as individuals. During meetings with the other volunteers from ASSB will allow them to change experiences and grow up together. The volunteer will also have the chance to participate in an Italian language course, which probably lasts 30 hours and takes place two times a week, in the evening. If the funds would allow us to, it could also be possible to organize a German course to those who would like to, seen that Bolzano is a bilingual region. It will be offered to the volunteers to participate also in some specific short-term courses usually designed to the staff. During the whole period of the service, monthly meetings will be arranged between the volunteers and the person in charge of the in ASSB. Those meetings will be an additional opportunity to
73
exchange opinions and impressions between the volunteers and the staff of the nursing homes. It will be a space to talk about eventual problems, perplexities or curiosities. Besides that, the EVS coordinator of InCo will organize at least 2 personal meetings with the volunteers besides a constant evaluation by email and phone in order to verify if the project is being developed in the proper way. The volunteers can live inside Casa Don Bosco, where there is an apartment for three people or in Villa Serena, where there are two double rooms with bathroom in common. Both options are inside the nursing homes of elders of ASSB. The lodging choice will be always decided by ASSB and it's not possible for the volunteers to choose their own accommodation. The volunteers will share the room/apartment with other volunteers (never with elders). Seen that the lodging is inside the nursing homes, the volunteers have to respect the rules of the structure and the environment where they live. The main role of the volunteers is to collaborate with the staff of the nursing homes in the entertainment sector. The volunteers will be supported by a work supervisors and should never develop activities they don't feel like. They will do a voluntary service and therefore, won't substitute the place of the social worker or educators. Volunteers will collaborate with the staff of nursing homes with recreational and entertainment activities planned for the elderly. They will support also in assistance and care of the guests under the supervision of qualified workers (including accompanying persons with deambulation restrictions and distribution of meals). Last but not least, they will deal with complementary activities necessary for the accomplishment of the assistance to elders (eg. purchase of food and medicines for guests). In practice, leisure activities include the organization of parties, reading the newspaper together, play music, handicraft activities, small walks around in downtown, bingo, small trips, etc. The duties of our volunteers will include mainly the participation and the organization of cultural and recreational activities (reading newspapers, listen to music, handicraft workshops, walking tours, game evenings, organization of birthday parties etc.), the participation in daily excursions (in the mountains, to a lake, nearby market, etc.) and the support of the elders in the organization of their daily live (make different kind of purchases, accompaniment to the canteen, etc.). During the first month the volunteer should familiarize herself/himself with the house where s/he will work in, the activities to be developed, the language and the staff members of ASSB. After getting confidence with the everyday routine and the guests, the volunteers will be able to move more independently, improving their language skills and proposing other activities in line with their own interests and competences. The volunteers could be integrated the in following nursing houses of ASSB: Villa Europa, Villa Armonia, Casa Don Bosco, Griesenhof and Villa Serena. Although those are different structures, the role of the volunteer and the activities in which s/he would be involved are basically the same. Just to make a clear and practical example, the typical time table of a EVS volunteer in Villa Armonia could be as the following (Monday Friday)/ 8.00 helping with breakfast 9.00 - organizing activities of the day 9.30 developing activity predicted 12.00 14.00 lunch break 14.00 developing activity predicted 17.00 end of the working day.
74
Italy
The activities vary according to the day of the week and what is planned by the tutors. The weekly timetable changes almost every week, according to the entertaining offers (groups which goes to present themselves: children, dance groups, live music, etc) and proposal of the month (Christmas, spring, gardening, etc). Ithe activities could be as it follows: table games (bingo, cards, chess, etc.) manual activities (painting, cooking, gardening, etc.) cultural activities (cinema, expositions, museum's tour, group discussion, etc.) The weekly time table could INCLUDE as for example: Morning - Gymnastic; Cooking session Gardening Pedicure with professional school - Pet Therapy - Theater presentation Gymnastic Coffee moment afternoon - Hairdressing and manicure; Smile Therapy - Dance class Party and Music;Tombola Painting session - Music presentation (special guest) - Religious celebration Usually the volunteers will work 5 days a week and will have 2 consecutive days off. The working hour should be from Monday to Friday, but its possible that sometimes the volunteers should make some shifts (because of some special kind of activity during the weekend, for example). In those cases, the volunteers will have one extra day off in the following week. The volunteers will always have the opportunity do developed their own projects or introduce new kind of activities. Their proposals will be taken into considerations and discussed in such a way to foster the objectives and results foreseen, supporting the volunteer to develop his/her own organizational and creative capacities. Our project is open to all young volunteers (with more then 18 years old) who has a special interest and sensibility to elderly people and could bring new energy and enthusiasm to ASSB and its nursing homes in order to improve the conditions of the guests in the nursing homes, contributing to maintain active their physical, mental and affective capacities. Once that the volunteers will be permanently in contact with the elders, they should be open to relate with them, have patience to listen and help them, having interest in interpersonal communication. Another characteristic which would be welcome (although not mandatory) would be that volunteers have a previous knowledge of Italian or German (it would facilitate the integration of the volunteer). The project drafting, the volunteers' identification as well as the management of practical details is developed together with InCo. Regarding the identification of potential volunteers, InCo is in charged to promote the free vacancies, answering and taking into consideration all young people who contacts the organization through email or a sending organization. We have also agreed that InCo manages the first phase of selection, considering the motivation and expectations of the volunteers (verified by their motivation letter, emails exchange and an evaluation of the sending partner). InCo tries always to keep a gender and origin balance between the volunteers taking into consideration not only the single individuals but also the already existing group in our structure. The final decision is taken by Ms. Maniezzo in accordance with the Director of the ASSBs Legal Office and the Director of the Nursing Homes for Elders. ASSB and InCo are open to work with Sending Organization from any country. The most important thing for us is that they prepare and supports the volunteers as its predicted by the Youth in Action Program, respecting the deadlines and agreements set, and being collaborative in case of an emergency or crises.
75
The EVS Activity doesnt put our volunteers in any kind of dangerous or risky situation. They will make a tour in the nursing home in order to know the rooms, the working dynamics, the rules and the expected behavior in case of emergency. During all the voluntary service regular visits will be organized by the person in charge of the volunteers in ASSB, in order to verify the corresponding actions asked and foreseen. That is an occasion for the volunteers to show and discuss eventually problems and difficulties. In case of eventual problems, it's foreseen to use open communication during a moment when the problem just arose and did not escalate yet. This should support the development of the service and the permanence of the volunteer in ASSB. In case of need, the mentor (Ms. Maniezzo) has the possibility to intervene and discuss about the problem with the direction of ASSB, the work supervisors as well as the EVS coordinator of InCo. In the case of a serious crisis, Ms. Maniezzo will organize immediately a meeting with the volunteer and other interested people involved in order to affront the problem in the beginning. Together, we will try to understand the reasons and eventual difficulties in order to find a common and satisfying solution. Volunteers will be informed since the beginning about the responsibilities and action spheres of each organization/person involved in the project, as well as be provided with respective telephone numbers. In no case it's foreseen the participation of under aged volunteers.

bringing a young smile to the elders assisted, combating loneliness and social exclusion in an inclusive and intercultural way. In short, our motivation to host international volunteers are those to give continuity to values such as: promote the idea of a European mentality; promote intercultural exchange; foster solidarity among young people towards the elderly and the rapprochement between those generations; make a contribution against social discrimination; promote coexistence between Italian and German population by the presence of an European volunteer who demonstrates the peaceful coexistence between people of different cultures; the coexistence should not be obviously limited to citizens of South Tyrol, but also covers foreign nationals; give volunteers the opportunity to experience non-formal education; enrich the live of the elderly guests, offering them the opportunity to make contact with young people from different cultures, bringing a new spirit to the entertainment activities offered by the staff and the elders themselves; place a volunteer in the entertainment activities developed inside the nursing homes and encourage them to participate actively in using their skills and knowledge. In order to be able to participate in EVS, however, we count on InCo Association's support, who since the beginning helps us in this experience and promotes international exchange. Without their support (especially regarding bureaucratic and administrative issues, orientation of volunteers and contacts with foreign partners), it would not be feasible to us to participate in the program since its management complexity and our commitment in other areas.
77
geriatric assistants, social work assistants, nurses, speech therapists, entertainers and administrative staff. Inside the nursing homes, there are 338 collaborator divided as it follows: 65 collaborators in Villa Armonia (being 56 engaged in the direct assistance to the guests); 201 in Villa Europa and Casa di riposo Don Bosco (180 direct assistance); 59 in Villa Serena (51 direct assistance); 23 in Grieserhof (21 direct assistance); The rest of the staff is occupied with administrative issues or some specialized service (like cooking, cleaning or maintenance operations). In the city of Bolzano, 22,3% of the population corresponds to elders, with a constant increase of people over 65 years (in the last decade the total number increased from 18.263 to 22.426). In the elders reality, ASSB tries to guarantee services of quality in order to supply the increasing elderly population with their needs. In this view its possible to understand our willingness to have young motivated volunteers inside the activities promoted by ASSB. The number of elderly people assisted by the ASSB is huge. Villa Armonia hosts 80 fixed guest and 21 temporary; Villa Serena instead has 75 fixed and 14 temporary; there are 165 fixed guests in Don Bosco; 88 fixed and 79 temporary in Villa Europa; and 34 fixed and 17 temporary handicaps in Grieserhof.

Project environment
Project environment: Outline the project environment for the suggested voluntary Service, including the local community where the project will take place (e.g. geographical, social and economical environment). If the host placement is located in a live-in community, please include the rules and conditions that apply also for the volunteer. The association Cre.A.Ndo. Insieme is located in Asti, in the East part and includes the districts of San Lazzaro, San Domenico, Praia and Villaggio dei Santi. The problems of this area are the typical ones of the suburbs, where varied life experiences and situations live together, a large number of immigrants and families with bad socioeconomic troubles. There are many acts of bullying, hooliganism and vandalism; the school giving up among young is frequent, mainly due to the cultural poverty of the environment where they live. The lack of sound spurs and the family background, that often does not guarantee the appropriate support for a healthy and harmonic growth because it is nearly totally absent, make these young become a risky class of people. Often those who have a family that follows and helps them feel a deep loneliness due also to the incapacity to establish positive and equal relationships with people of the same age. Creando Insieme has got about 70 members (30 are active), it's a heterogeneous group made up of young people and grown-ups, males and females. The executive board is composed of 10 people and meets once a month to plan the activities, to verify the performance of the projects and to collect members' suggestions. The premises where the association carries on its own activities are: Oratorio di San Domenico Savio (Parish Youth Club), the Youth Aggregation Centre Casa Dietro and Hospitality Centre Casa Tabor. Inside the area and in cooperation with San Domenico Savio Parish, the association's volunteers perform recreational and entertaining activities for children and teenagers of the district, intervening in structured environments, such as the parish youth club, the Youth Aggregation Centre Casa Dietro, summer activities for young, the Hospitality Centre Casa Tabor, but also more informal situations (groups of young people that sporadically attend Casa Dietro, parties in the district). The main targets of the association are the following: to aggregate people around initiatives of inter-ethnic and intercultural socialization;
79
to form and prepare responsible, autonomous and positive people; "to facilitate meeting and communication among generations in order to promote a lifestyle in which is possible to make comparisons and to learn from the experience of other people; to offer to youth the opportunity to spend their free time in an amusing, educative and socializing way; to prevent and to remove situations of need and discomfort on the territory; to offer premises for meetings in order to achieve aggregation among people through moments of commitment and joy.
At the moment the association does not have the premises to give hospitality to the European volunteers, for this reason we will make use of Vedogiovane Asti that will put at their disposal a room of the flat they are using for their European voluntary projects LEARNING OPPORTUNITY The European volunteers who are going to participate to our project will be able: to learn a new language and to be available for teaching their own language; to know and to learn elements connected to the world of the tendency to form associations and the voluntary work, with some elements of administration and funds research; to learn using professional instruments within musical and theatrical production (recording software, audio equipment for live events); to participate to the planning and realization of playful moments for children, young people of the area, making comparisons with the volunteers of the association and offering their own skill; to try themselves out in the management of small groups; ROLE OF THE VOLUNTARY WORK IN THE ASSOCIATION The European volunteers will support the volunteers of the association in the realization of activities. At the beginning we will entrust them with little practical tasks (photocopies, leaflets, arrangement of the Parish premises for the activities, management of the place and the reservations of the music hall) always joined to an experienced volunteer. We would appreciate a lot if from this cooperation could arise a real intercultural comparison, not only concerning the practical realization of the activities, but also as to the methodology, used instruments and reasons that press young people to make voluntary work in a specific association. Later on we will ask them to hold a more active rule in the organization and in the realization of the activities and if the European young want they will be able perhaps to organize some activities autonomously. All the activities will be agreed during the scheduling meetings with the person in charge. ACTIVITIES IN WHICH THE VOLUNTEERS WILL BE INVOLVED Casa Dietro" Youth Centre: management of the recording and music hall, recording of informative radio programs regarding the association's activities in cooperation with "RadioDietro", organization of the activities for teenagers of primary and secondary school ( games, tournaments, laboratories), management of anIinternet point for young people of the area, participation in the activities of the project "Musicando Insieme" (advertisemens, contacts, management of the premises); Parish youth club: activities with children from 0 to 18 years old. Games, laboratories, meetings with a specific topic for children and families; Summer project for youth: summer and residential centre for children of primary and secondary school; Tabor house: reservation of the premises, internal and external maintenance of the house, reception of the guests, assistance service during some parts of the day, (breakfast, meals, opening and closing of the premises) Promotion of the association's activities: maintenance and updating of the Internet website, creation of promotional material (playbills, flyers, newsletters...) 80

INTRODUCTION IN THE ACTIVITIES Presentation of the association: our volunteers will prepare a presentation of the association and the activities during which the European volunteers will be able to visit the premises and to meet all the members of Creando Insieme; Observation of the activities: in the first month of the project the European volunteers will be introduced by our volunteers in the activities. They will meet the young who attend ours "services" and they will try to build with them a relationship starting from small recreational activities. In this stage the volunteers will be accompanied by the coordination tutor of the organization who will help them both on a linguistic level and supplying them with the monitoring and evaluation tools for the observation/knowledge process. Carrying out of the activities: the European volunteers will support the operators and the volunteers of the associations in all the activities, offering their own skills and observing the planning arranged with the work group. They will be able to propose activities and games and to try themselves out in the management of small activities. Training: if necessary we will organize moments of training ad hoc for the European volunteers with the aim to supply them with the necessary tools for the realization of the activities (animation techniques, games, multimedia tools.). During the year Creando Insieme asks for the intervention of some professional animators to accompany the youngest volunteers in the realization of some more structured activities (Casa Dietro, summer centres..), obviously also the European volunteers will be inserted in these stages of project. MONITORING Together with the scrupulous job of monitoring that the coordination organization will perform during the whole project (see Demonstration of Interest "Vedogiovane Asti") we forecast to organize a meeting every two weeks with the volunteers and the work groups with the purpose to verify the course of the activities, the satisfaction degree of the European volunteers and the association. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: Please describe the profiles of volunteers you would like to receive in your organisation. Include information on how you ensure an open and transparent recruitment process as well as the overall accessibility of EVS to all young people. Consider further information about the type of Sending Organisation you want to cooperate with. This information can help the match-making between volunteer candidates, Sending Organisations and your organisation. For the selection of the volunteer we'll be helped by the experts of Vedogiovane Asti as coordinating organisation of the project. Our idea is to look for volunteers who show: High motivation in respect to the type of project and activities Availability to experiment himself in different activities (practical and theorical) Be "ready" to live in a city of middle dimension, able to propose qualified event, but only in some part of the year (March - October) Be flexible respect to the timetable: some of the proposed activities will be carried on during the week end, with the possibility to have free days during the week Be curious and capable to confront his experience with the other's experience Age and gender are not important criterion: the person doing activities in the association have heterogeneous characteristics (man, woman, young, adult, different religion, Italian, foreigner...), therefore the volunteers that will participate to the project won't be selected on vital statistics.
81
Vedogiovane Asti will take care of the practical phases of the selection (contacts, documentation...) and will choose the volunteers with the responsible of the association. Number of volunteers hosted: 2 Risk prevention, protection and safety: Together with the coordination work of the organization that will deal with the explanation to the volunteers some "rules of survival for living well in Asti" (see Demonstration of interest Vedogiovane Asti), the person in charge of Creando Insieme will meet the European volunteers and will explain them how to perform safely the activities of the project. We will organize a small tour of the premises where the association carries out activities and our volunteers will be in charge of supervising the European volunteers in case they should face dangerous circumstances. The European volunteers will be able to enjoy the national health care and AXA insurance for special expenses.

for both parties is possible to put to good use what has been learnt during the project for the future life. If the association is confirmed it will be our intention to propose a project with the deadline of June 1st 2011, in order to start giving hospitality to the volunteers in September 2011.

Project environment
The project will take place mainly in Via Parenzo's area, but the activities in the schools can be done in different schools along the City and the metropolitan area. Via Parenzo's area has nearly 6.400 inhabitants, and belongs to the Circoscrizione 5 (district 5), in the north-west of the City. This area is characterized by the high concentration of residence buildings that needs renewal interventions. The inhabitants fo Via Parenzo arrived to the district in different waves. The first, the inhabitants of the so called "red houses" came from zones in which the italians have been sent off, like Istria or Dalmazia or repatriated people from Libia, Grecia, Tunisia, Albania. Some time after, during the seventies, immigrants from the south of Italy began to arrive, attracted by the industrial city that offered new opportunities. The last people arrived in the houses of Via Parenzo, are the foreign migrants from other parts of the city. In all this area high levels of social distress are found. Therefore, this area is deprived of it's own identity, characterized by disorientation and an urban design sometimes casual and confused, by the impossibility or great risk of overcoming some physical barriers, by a public space without maintenance. Green areas, even if present, are characterized by the lack of security; paths, illumination and street furniture are not enough and several places are used as meeting points by drug addicts and dealers. In addition to the urban decay, also environmental decay is very clear. Nevertheless, the area contains public and private resources active or becoming active to contribute to the resolution of the social problems found, being recognizable cultural, commercial, social, medical, scholar, religious and sportive resources in the area. The District Contract aims to improve the urban quality and to promote the regeneration of the zone, to sustain the development of the whole north-west of the City. Mondoerre is a part of the District Contract, developing in its sphere different projects addressed to the local youth with the aim of understanding its needs and identifying its problems. After, together with the local youth, Mondoerre has worked to reinforce or create virtuous relationships between same aged youngsters, family and district, from a community point of view. Service and learning opportunities The volunteers that will collaborate with us in our projects will be able to acquire different kinds of knowledge. At Mondoerre we want the volunteers experience to have a positive impact, not only in their education and experiences, but also in their development and personal growth. Volunteers will be therefore involved in the EVS formation cycle (pre-departure training, on arrival training, midterm evaluation, final evaluation) and also in formation events planned for them inside our

organisation. The main methodology used for the education inside the project will be learning by doing, that is, the acquisition of the knowledge through direct experience. First of all, we want the volunteers to know deeply Italian culture, in all its complexity and contradictions. The volunteers will live immersed in another culture, with other traditions, habits and ideas, and, through a specific formation, we want them to seize the opportunity of being compromised with inter-cultural dialogue. For this reason, they will receive a language course to reach an adequate level of Italian, in order to be able to express themselves and talk without great problems. Volunteers will attend language courses for migrants, that will allow them to know other cultural and social situations in the city. Apart from the language course, the volunteers will receive specific cultural formation, in which we will explain these themes: Culture and history of Italy and Turin. The volunteers will acquire knowledge of social, political and administrative organisation of the Italian Republic, and its history and principal challenges for the future. Inter-cultural communication. The volunteers will be formed about the difficulties present in the communication between different cultures and the methodologies to use in order to overcome these obstacles. Conflicts resolution. The volunteers will learn the methodologies of crisis management that will be useful at work or at home. Regarding the knowledge that the volunteers will acquire during the development of the activities, they will receive specific training at the beginning of every activity, and will count on the constant support of Mondoerre's workers to solve any doubt or difficulty found in the project. In general, and independently of the activities developed, the volunteers will have the opportunity to improve their knowledge about: Methodologies of intervention while working with youth and children. The volunteers will learn to use the educational tools practised by Mondoerre's staff in each project. In this way, the volunteers will be able to understand the importance of creativity in education and how stimulate this creativity has positive consequences in youngsters and children personal growth, raising their self-esteem, their capacities of expression and their participation in the activities proposed. Working methodologies with local community. The volunteers will be able to learn to observe the needs and critical points of peripheral districts, the importance of creating active networks on the field, made by associations, but also by public institutions, and above all, the development of the territory through projects made by participated planning methodologies, that make the inhabitants of the district the main characters of the changes that take place on it. We want that, at the end of their volunteering period, the EVS volunteers have a clear idea of the project's development in non profit sector and the tools that this sector can use to work efficiently together with local communities. To ensure volunteers' integration in Mondoerre staff and in the social life of the city, a personal mentor will be assigned to each volunteer. The mentor will help the volunteer in any kind of problem. The mentors will meet the volunteers regularly (at least once a week) to verify the progress in learning process and to solve eventual problems. They will discuss also the results of the learning process at the end of the project, in order to achieve the Youthpass. The mentor won't be the volunteers supervisor; a project coordinator will meet periodically the volunteers to verify the progress of the activities in which they are involved.
85
Practical arrangements: Housing: The volunteers will live in apartments with other EVS volunteers in shared rooms, in order to increase the possibilities of cultural exchange. Transports: the volunteers will have monthly tickets to public transports of the city and/or bicycles to ensure freedom of movements. Food: Volunteers will receive monthly an amount of money to buy their own food and cook it, alone or together with their flatmates.
Role of the EVS volunteers at Mondoerre: The role of the EVS volunteers will depend on the activities in which they will be involved and on their interests and capacities. They will work side by side with Mondoerre's workers and will be encouraged to participate in all the phases of the projects development, as a part of their learning process. Mondoerre's staff will give to the volunteers all the tools needed for their integration and for their autonomy and independence. The volunteers will be encouraged to develop their creativity and to bring ideas to the different activities in which they will be involved. They will be supported all the time by Mondoerre's staff, and the project coordinator/s will have the legal and general responsibility of all the volunteers activities. These activities will be monitored periodically. Activities proposed for the volunteersUrban vegetable gardens: One of the activities we develop since several years at Via Parenzo is a vegetable garden, children from the nursery school, together with the elderly people of the bowls club look after this space. This activity has shown to be an important spot of life in the zone, reaching different objectives:People of different ages collaborate to carry on the garden during the whole year, making it become a meeting point with events open to all the inhabitants of the district. The oldest people of the district, many of them former farmers, see their knowledge appreciated and applied to the garden. The garden is completely organic, the land has been analysed and has an optimal quality. In this way, the vegetable garden is useful to give to the children an education regarding healthy food and environmental protection. The volunteer will collaborate in the maintenance of the vegetable garden, and also in the creation of events and activities for children and adults that look after it. The volunteers can collaborate in the diffusion of this activity between the inhabitants of the district, encouraging them to participate or to reply this experience with the help of Mondoerre. Sustainable mobility projects: These projects are aimed to two different targets in the district. One of them, called Triciclibus, is made in a nursery school. This project promotes the use of the bicycle between children, encouraging them to make the way to school by bike. Through this project, we give children a deep knowledge of their streets, improving at the same time their road safety with the lessons given at the school. The children's parents are also involved in this initiative, in order to give to them the opportunity to change their relationship with the city through alternatives of sustainable mobility. The volunteers can participate in all the phases of this project, from planning to the preparation of the material for the lessons and to the trips by bike in the city parks. Another project focused on sustainable mobility, addressed to the local youth is the Ciclofficina. This project wants to involve youngsters by means of courses about bikes self-repairing and mobility alternatives. Daytime Centre: The Daytime Centre is managed by Mondoerre, assigned by the Social Services of the city of Turin. In this centre, addressed to children between 6 and 12 years, there are different educational activities, aimed to the assistance and prevention of juvenile distress. The volunteer wiil be able to work together with the educators during their stay in Turin.

Italy
Workshop: in the Corso Cincinnato 115 building we work on different workshops for the district inhabitants. For children there is a Recycling Workshop all the weeks in the afternoon. This workshop, that is working since some time ago, allows children to explore the possibilities that a lot of objects and materials have and "save" them from the rubbish bin. In this way, they develop their creativity and, at the same time, we can treat with them some important issues as environment protection and separate rubbish collection. For youth and adults there will be a Cookery Workshop. This workshop has as main aim the approach of the people living in the area, by means of cooking ideas and recipes exchange. We want to create an environment in which use to advantage the knowledge of the people with different origin, and to promote a healthy and natural nutrition. The volunteers will be able to collaborate in the organisation of the workshop, in its communication and in the lessons, bringing their own knowledge and experience. They will be able to cooperate in all the preparation, making and evaluation phases. Theatre at schools and Image Education. Mondoerre is specialised in the production of cultural events, particularly theatre and image education trainings (video and photography) We promote, mainly with youngsters but sometimes also with adults, an educational theatre that wants to become a synthesis between art concept, understood as a whole of aesthetic choices that have their own value, and a vision strictly pedagogical that attributes to the theatrical activity other objectives, as creating social poise, overcoming shyness, improve the self-expression, and, this way, make people know, discover and improve themselves. The methodology is made to create stimulus adapted to the exigences of the group. European volunteers will be able to cooperate in the lessons at school, preparing materials, working on planning and accompanying the educators to the schools. Social promotion activities and volunteering promotion. The members of Mondoerre contribute voluntarily, depending on their interests, to the initiative and projects addressed to youth and adults of the area, in the conviction that social work cannot be limited to professional interventions. European volunteers will be also involved in this activity, that go from the support to the educators of the Daytime Centre, to the creation of theatre groups between neighbours of Via Parenzo. In this sphere, volunteers will have more freedom to create and implement their own ideas and activities, promoting volunteering and participation in the district. The volunteers will be helped in every moment by Mondoerre workers, that will encourage them and support them to put into practice their ideas and to live an autonomous experience of social development. The profile of the volunteers we look for is defined by independence, curiosity towards other cultures and social situations and initiative. It's fundamental for us to have volunteers very interested in their own integration in the works dynamics of Mondoerre, making an effort to learn our work methodologies with youth and local community. It's very important that volunteers have high motivation. To work with children and youth is always a challenge, particularly when they are in a high social exclusion risk. Volunteers will need to have patience and assertiveness. The candidates should send us a CV and a motivation letter. The letter will be fundamental in the selection process. We will take under consideration previous experience as volunteers, particularly in the field of youth or children, but it is not compulsory. We will appreciate also the artistic or craft-work capabilities. In our project, creativity is essential and for this reason, we will take under consideration all the activities the candidates have done to increase and develop it. It is important to know to use basic elements in an office: PC, internet, telephone and fax. All candidates and their sending organisations will be informed about the number of vacancies available, about the number of candidacies presented and about the criteria and selection process.
87
The kind of organisations we would like to work with is very various. From organisations focused on youth policies to those more interested in environment and urban development. Also those which work with youth through the development of creativity and artistic activities are very interesting for us. We would like to build deep relationships with the partner organisations, in order to create a dynamic ideas and experiences exchange to improve our projects and increase their impact. The maximum number of volunteers we can host, with the guarantee of a total participation in the activities of the project and a correct monitoring from the staff is six at the same time. To ensure volunteers safety during their stay in our organisation, we foresee the development of risk analysis for each activity proposed. This analysis is particularly important for us, as we usually work with children. Once we have identified the risks, we will create the prevention measures needed and the methodology to manage the eventual crisis. The prevention measures are put into practice fundamentally through the volunteers' training in these themes: risk prevention insurance projects critical points, rights and duties, AXA insurance contents. Mondoerre's workers will be also informed about risks and will be the main force for the management of the eventual crisis. The volunteers will be always accompanied by the members of the staff during the development of the activities in which higher risks are found, and will have the contact data of all the persons designated to solve these problems. All EVS volunteers will have an expert mentor, they will know all the contact data to call him/her in case of need or emergency. The mentor will analyse the activities together with the volunteer and will have a continuous contact with Mondoerre staff to suggest interventions needed to guarantee the development of the activities in a safe way for the volunteer. Mondoerre collaborates and has collaborated in the past with organisations that have a great experience in EVS project management. These organisations have taught us how to react in the emergency situations lived by their volunteers, in a way to make us create our emergency measures for all of them (like need of medical assistance, robberies)
88
Italy
At the same time, we are very interested in proposing to the young volunteers to know our culture, our work and our compromise to improve the city in which we live, in a dynamic ideas, experiences and creativity exchange. We want to offer the same opportunity to the youths that work with us and participate in our activities and projects. We consider that, for the local youngsters, the possibility of new learnings in a voluntary activity abroad would be an important inflexion point for their lives and their future working life.

Project environment
Project environment: The Daycare center is situated in district of Kaunas named Palemonas. After regaining back state independancy, huge ceramic factory in Palemonas were closed, causing huge unemployment rates and no alternative to keep high economical level. People, who had opportunity, moved to the center exchanging the accomodation with poor people, mostly having alcohol problems, therefore there's a big concentration of multi-problematical families in the district at the moment. Palemonas district has poor public transport connection to Kaunas, therefore inhabitants of Palemonas have less opportunities to be integrated to Kaunas society physically. Prevailing difficulties of Palemonas are unemployment, poor economical situation, poor hygiene conditions, lack of constructive leisure time offers. Children living in the distric usually see negative parents behaviour: abusing aclohol, conflicts, agression towards other family members. Children suffer poverty, violence, neglect, too few possibilities to spend their leisure time purposefully, therefore it's hard to integrate to school community or public, often children are absent at school, involved in criminal act or abuse of alcohol. The objective of of Palemonas Children Daycare Center program is the integration of the children into society by infuencing all three levels of their personality: physical, psychological and spiritual. As an educational method the sisters are using Preventive Children and Youth Education System created by St. Son Bosco, described by three pricipals: 1. Reason, which expresses itself as reasonableness and flexibility in rules and requests; 2. Religion, which helps people to find meaning in their life and to develop a sense of the presence of God in person; 3. Loving kindness, where young people know that they are loved and are thus helped to develop their full potential.
Proposed activities:
91
Volunteers' role at "Palemonas Daycare center" is worker's assistant. Volunteers learn how to work with children of social risk environment, though they will never get the final responsibility for the children and there'll always be worker to assist in difficult situations. Volunteers help to organise different activities for children, assist in teaching children social skills. Volunteers main task at Palemonas Daycare center: to organize different workshops for children (according to their skills) sport, vreative, educational activities; to teach children to use computer programs; to help children to do their homework; to teach children english or other foreign language; to organize festivals, excursions, summer camps; to implement their own ideas, collaborate with other organisations and volunteers. Schedule for the volunteers (it's one of the possible schedules, it may be changed together with volunteers) Monday to Friday: 11.00-12.00 Preparing equipment for the day, welcoming children. 12.00-13.30 Assistance the children in doing homework. 13.30-14.30 Preparation for the lunch volunteers together with the nuns and the children prepare the meals, and serve it to the table. 14.30-15.00 Having lunch with the children 15.00-17.00 Different workshops (art, sports) assisted or done by volunteers. 17.00-17.30 Tidy up together with the children (arranging all the toys, cleaning of the rooms etc.) There will be some all day for organizing the festivals, excursions, summer camps. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: We accept all volunteers, regardless their background or other features. Eventhough it is crucial to love children and be willing to work with children from social risk environment. It is also preferable that the volunteer wouldn't have any harmful habits or addictions, which would influence nurturing of the kids. Number of volunteers hosted: 2 Risk prevention, protection and safety: Volunteers will live in the rented flat in Kaunas city itself together with 1-2 other volunteers from other hosting organizations. There is public transport taking volunteers directly to Palemonas and back. Volunteers are part of 9-11 volunteers' group, which meets regularly, attends on-arrival, midterm trainings organized by coordinating organisation as well as National Agency. Each volunteer has trained mentor, who meets regularly (each or every 2 weeks) for reflection, to establish learning goals and follow progress, mentor also provides personal support for the volunteer, establish trustful relationship, prevent crisis and seek for professional help if necessary. Palemonas day-care centre" creates microclimate favourable to being yourself and openness to the others, which makes easier for volunteers to adapt and find their place. At working place volunteers do not take final responsibility. Volunteers don't stay alone with children in the centre, there's always professional worker around, who helps to manage stressful situations and also provides consultations on pedagogical issues, personal support. Volunteers are introduced to safety rules, agreements and important things to know about specific things before they start, in order to prevent misunderstandings and to ensure fluent volunteers integration. In case of crisis we cooperate with coordinating organisation, mentor and sending organisation in

Project environment
Project environment Don Bosco Center is located near the city center in Podgorica, the capital and largest city of Montenegro. Podgorica is a city with about 180 000 citizens. The city is located at the crossroads of Montenegro. Podgorica locally stands among the confluence of two fertile planes (Bjelopavlicka and Zetska) and is surrounded by mountains. These two fertile valleys are cut through by no less than five rivers, including the Zeta, Sitnica, Ribnica and Cijevna which flow into the Moraca and into Lake Skadar. Lake Skadar, located between Podgorica and the sea, the region's varied height above sea-level, the relief of the land, and other factors in the region's geographical makeup, all have created the conditions for a sub-Mediterranean climate with mild winters and very hot summers. Podgorica is located 44 meters (145 feet) above sea-level and just a hundred or so kilometers (about sixty miles) from well-known seaside resorts and attractive winter sports centers, including those in Bar, Budva, and Herceg Novi. The construction of the Sozina tunnel allows travelers to leave Podgorica and reach the Adriatic coast in just half an hour's drive. Construction in Podgorica and surrounding areas is proceeding at such a pace that almost daily the foundations of new building are being laid. New cultural, scientific institutions, modern roads (especially bridges), business centers, promenades, schools, hospitals, monuments, hotels and restaurants and sports facilities are springing up almost overnight. It is justifiable to say that today's Podgorica is the unquestionable administrative, cultural, financial, business, transport and service center of the country of Montenegro. In the fifth century AD, while the Roman Empire was beginning to dissolve, the first Slav and Avar tribes began to arrive in the region. The interest of the Slavs in establishing their own state and the interests of Byzantium came into conflict with the local Docelans and constant wars were fought during which Doclea was eventually obliterated completely. The most likely date for this "first demise" of ancient Podgorica is set as 602 AD, because from that date local records of the community, or references to its wealth, cease to exist.

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers The EVS volunteers will work in Youth Center Don Bosco and will participate in many activities such as: sports activities ( football, basketball, volleyball and table tennis) spare time activities ( socializing through selected programme activities, visiting events and happenings in the city, picknicks cultural and artistic activities creative workshops music activities We think that volunteers could learn a lot in our center, and they can use that knowlage to develop practical skills and abilities and certainly this knowledge will be useful for them in future. Volunteers can learn how to organize appropriate events for young adults and other people too, could learn to foster values such as tolerance, respect and appreciation of other cultures and different opinions. Staying in our center is great opportunity for volunteers to learn montenegrin language. The easiest and fastest way to learn language is by staying in our center among young people of his age. If volunteers want they can participate in sports activities and develop properly their physicall characteristics. They can learn other things too, such as dancing, playing some instruments, singing. Volunteers can practise singing in choir or they can teach the others how to sing or play some instrument. Creative workshops are ideal opportunity for volunteers to show their potentials and express their ideas in creative way. Through our programmes volunteers learn who to work as a team members. Volunteers would work with children and young adults who visit our center. They could also participate in programs which animators prepare along with mentors. So, the volonteers could participate in: Daily oratories which are performed every day from 13:00 p.m to 15:00 p.m for children up to 6 th garde preliminary school, age 7-12 Daily oratories which are performed every day from 15:00 p.m to 16:00 p.m for young adults from 7 th grade preliminary school to 1 st garde high school, age 12-15 On workshops which are being organized every week. Their main goal is educational, to teach children new things, to know better the enviroment in which they live. On organizing and taking part in humanitarian projects. The volonteers could take part in soprt activities which are being organized for young adults: Training for children (football school) Basketball school "Feer play" Street ball league Don Bosko league Mini league Through this activities children promote physical growth and develepment, and develop sport spirt and habits as well. There is also set of cultural activites which are being organized in center and in which volonteers also can take part: organizing of practise or even playing in band "Ljetaci" organizing of entertainment evenings organizing and performing of summer and winter oratories
99
We organize winter oratories in january and summer oratories in june and each lasts two weeks. Each oratories is theme determined. In this time of year we go with young adults to a picnick which we organise. Herewith we want the children to socialize and make friends, in a good enviroment, which helps them in their growing up. Volunteers can agree his activities with the leaders of our center. Volonteers could also express their opinion over the programmes they partecipate in, they can also suggest their own ideas of organizing other programmes that they are interested in. They can discuss all these topics with our center`s leaders. Our leaders are ready to accept good and inovative ideas of any kind. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process Volunteers we chose should be highly motivated to work on current projects that are organized in our Center, and give their contribution to its implementation. It should be the enthusiastic young persons ready to learn the customs and culture of our country and accept people of different religions since our center works in multicultural environment. It is very important for our Center that volunteers are skilful in working with children and young people, to be creative and determinative person with strong will. The advantage to be chosen would have those who have already worked on similar youth projects. The Center is open to all people regardless of religion, gender and nation. We will form the commission for choosing the volunteers. The members of this commission will be: the director of Youth Centre Don Bosco, chief animator and a member of Caritas's organization. The applications should be written, and the main criteria for choosing volunteers will be their motivation and will to work in our center. We prefer cooperating with organizations similar to ours and organizations that work on improving of position of young people who are socially threatened. So we would like to work with the Silesian centers from region as well as Catholic organizations. The volunteers we chose should speak if possible Italian and English language. Number of volunteers hosted: 2 at the same time Special needs Children and young people who come to our center are generally problematic youth. They are inclined to risky behavior and problems. Because of problems which they have to cope with, they need a specific approach. Therefore, the volunteers who should work with them had to be stable and calm person. It should be the persons with high moral values. Since we deal with the sensitive youth, we would not be able to accommodate persons who has reduced opportunities for sensitive persons because that kind of volunteers would not be able to work well with them. Volunteers can certainly count on the help and support of mentors and people who work in the Center. The director of Youth Center Don Bosco is very experienced in working with young people, he has already worked with young people in Don Bosco Center Maribor, and he has also worked with troubled young people in Italy for four years. He is founder and director of spiritual music festival "The rythm of spirit", director of Youth Center as well as leader of Center for Pedagogy and Education. He works in Youth Center along with mentors who have attended school for animators and who are very experienced since they have many practise from trainings which were held in Montenegro and in foreign countries. Risk prevention, protection and safety We would provide a room for volunteers to live in our center which is located in Zagrebacka 3, 81 000 Podgorica. The volunteesr could also use a library, which can also serve for their afternoon rest

in consultation with the management of the Center. Library is equipped with TV and computer with internet access. Certainly access to wireless internet is provided to them in the room in which they stay. Within the Center there is a kitchen so that we would provide them nutrition. Work facilities in our Center are very good. We have modern well equipped premises, sports halls, classrooms, library and offices. We accomplish all standards regarding work safety. In the case of physical injuries health center is 100m away from our center, so that we can react immediately in case of such need. Volunteers who come to our center will have a mentor who would help them when they came in our community. The mentor would help them dealing with new enviroment conditions. They would also have a mentor supervisor for any professional help and assistance on our center activities. There is also supervisor concerned for supervision of all people who work in center as well as the volunteers.

Project environment
Project environment Salesian Association of Youth Upbringing is a non-profit non-governmental organisation, which dedicated full time to the service of young people, especially those who are poor and disadventaged. The target group of our organisation is youth from Salesian Youth Movement - young people with different kind of interest and do various activity leaded by Salesians (sports, scouts, for altar boys, oasis, pilgrim and evangelising groups as well as students of Salesians schools and pupils of oratories, youth dayrooms and pedagogical posts). Particularly we put pressure to work with youth with less opportunities, especially if there are financial problems in their families, and also with youth from Salesian pedagogical, caring or social rehabilitation posts. It is connected with Salesian mission (as St. John Bosco did, first of all we care about poor, lonely and disadventaged youth, who need love and evangelization). That is why we particularly work in the poorest environments. Form of work of our organisation: leading and working in local environment with groups and Youth Movements of young people with various interests, using metods directed to an integral human growth; directing therapeutic posts and oratories - places, where young people can safely and spend their free time in creative way; -organizing workshops, youth meetings, rallies and also summer and winter holidays for children and youth (camps, colonies, raids).
Proposed activities for EVS volunteers During this project our volunteers will achieve the following skills: methods of work with youth and children, especially those with fewer opportunities salesians style of upbringing leading groups of youth during their free time organization of non-formal education projects

Poland
We would like to realize this project with a group of volunteers (three or four volunteers in our organization), because then they will be able to create a family atmosphere in a place of their accomodation - in Oratory. During the project the volunteer will be an animator for youth and children, who spend their free time after school in Salesian Oratory "Dominiczek" in Bydgoszcz. The volunteer will: - assist during afternoon and weekend activities for children, for example the volunteer will help in leading games and plays, doing homework, assist and run recreation time, also in the open air; - assist during activities for youth, which take place in the Oratory during their free time - circles of interests (music, computers, sports, scientific); - animate and inspire youth to work and act during activities in youth dayroom. - help in organization and coordination of events, organized by Oratory in Bydgoszcz (for example bicycle trips, Salesians Days of Youth, charity concert: "We love you, Santa Claus", camps and trips for youth and children, etc). In addition, in our organisation the volunteer will have opportunities to take part in projects concerning intercultural education - youth exchanges and workshops, organized by our Association. Participation in these projects will give the volunteer a great chance to get to know more about form of work with youth and other useful information. Being there the volunteer will also meet new people, make new contacts and see interesting and beautiful places in Poland. We try to find new, attractive form of work with children and youth. So we will be very open for ideas of our future volunteers - during the project they will be able to realize theirs proposals of activities in Oratory. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process We would like to cooperate esspecially with organisations, which have similar profiles to our. Especially we would like to cooperate with organizations, which aim is upbringing of youth and children. We don't expect the volunteer to have any specials skills, be religious or have specific worldview. But common values accepted by everyone, who takes part in this project (hosting and sending organisations, volunteers) would be an asset for efectiveness of the project's realization. Our target group is youth with financial low status, who have problems in learning and education, who grew up in broken families, with many problems. As the great part of our work consists of activities for such youth, we would like to cooperate especially with the volunteer, who is open to work with difficult youth, from broken families. He should be responsible, open - minded, creative, sterling. The recruitment precess we would like to use an international web of salesians organisations, which web page address is : www.donboscoyouth.net . Number of volunteers hosted: Organisation is able to host 2 volunteers for long term projects. Special needs Salesians are prepared to work with youth with fewer opportunities because of their monastic formation, which lasts nine years, and also other additional specialist studies and courses. Practice and experience in work with youth with fewer opportunities Salesians achieve also through work in pedagogical and social rehabilitation posts.
105
Risk prevention, protection and safety Safety of accommodation - when volunteer will live in family's house, we choose only this family for him, who is known for Salesians and is connecting with activity of Oratory. The environment of work will be the Salesians Oratory, which is definitely safe place, so we think that there is no need to special protect to this place. In work with the volunteer we will use Salesians upbringing system. One of the aspects of it is family's character of work with youth, animation to tutors and supervisors, personal attitude. These elements will help also in potential volunteer's crisis during the project. Volunteers will also have a permanent access to the internet, which make their contact with their own family and friends easy and simply. For help in crisis situations responsible will be a mentor and volunteer's supervisor from Bydgoszcz.

The Salesian Youth Center was founded in 2002. It is a non-public, educational institution working on the field of resocialisation of young people (13-18 years old) from disfuncional families. The Salesian Youth Cener strive to create an educative atmosphere that will allow young people to discover their own values and find in themselves the strength to live a dignified life based on understanding and selfesteem. Our activities are realized in accordance with the educational system found by Saint John Bosco, who not ignoring individual differences, helped young people in tough conditions. The key to educational success is pedagogical optimism which allows helping young people. The Center is based in Rozanystok, which is a small village in the north-eastern Poland, close to National Parks and natural enviroment. PROJECT ENVIRONMENT: Azerbaijan, the official name of Republic of Azerbaijan is the largest and most populous country in the Caucasus region. It is situated in south-western Asia and a small part of its territory extends to Europe. To the east is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the north bordering the Russian Republic of Dagestan, to the northwest Georgia to the west of Armenia and to the south of Iran. Azerbaijan became independent in 1991. The Republic of Azerbaijan has 8.5 million habitants. The capital is Baku and it has about 2 million habitants. One of the most important sectors of Azerbaijan's economy is production of crude oil. The Maryam Centre has been working since November 2004. During our short existence, we developed our activities in many different areas: 1) The Maryam centre provides the courses in the school subjects of Azeri language and Literature, History, Geography, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and the Russian language. The centre also teaches foreign languages: English, German, Italian, and French. Computer programs; Windows, Word, Excel, and Power Point are also taught in the centre. Likewise subsidiary courses of painting, national and break dance, guitar play and meetings with psychologist. The centre doesn't forget to respect the body development of children and so in the centre there is a basketball and volleyball area and also table-tennis. The centre organises sport activities both in the centre, and other locations. In this video you can see our classes and teachers at work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JQsRUXKp0s&feature=related 2) Professional Courses "Your Future", the Maryam centre has started a new project in January, 2009, called "Your Future". The objective is to help youth, who have finished their secondary school and want to continue their education and grow their skills in some profession. The centre offers career skills training to develop: Electricians, Carpet Makers Furniture Designers Photographers Hair Stylist

3) Free-time activities. One of the most important functions of the centre is to organize summer camps for children at beach near Baku. At the camp children plunge into the fantastic world of games and adventures, music and sport competitions. They get healthy meal, proper sleep schedule and lots of outdoor fun camping activities that will strengthen their bodies and minds. New friends do not allow them to miss their home. During the year we organize excursions to other towns in Azerbaijan. The children see the historical and cultural sights of native country. We also organize celebration for major festivals throughout the year. The children also organize their own music and stand up comic competition. In this video you can see the favourite dance on our holidays and comic competition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVFVNirko6M&feature=related, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYBZUgC8uso PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR EVS VOLUNTEERS: To learn other foreign language and develop competences. A volunteer in our organisation has possibility to learn new languages and will develop communication skills - particularly skills allowing quickly move from one language to another (in the Maryam Centre we commonly use three languages: Azeri, Russian and English, and at the same time person can meet with German and Italian and also hear Avar, Lezgin or Tabasaran languages, which are in use by the minorities of Azerbaijan). Such a multinational environment will teach volunteers to communicate in a situation when they don't understand the language which is used by their partner. Multicultural society is connected with a multi-language environment as well. The community in Azerbaijan is very tolerant and relationship among different group is very good. Jews, Muslims, Christians and other religions live and work together. This is very powerful experience for everybody who visited Azerbaijan. Volunteer can develop his organizational skills, through help with free-time activities. Every year we organise many summer camps, sport activities, workshops... The role of EVS volunteer is according to his/her abilities to participate in our program and activities desirable as leader, not simply as attendant. Volunteers can organise trainings for youngsters, teach dances etc. They can offer their ideas, abilities. In this way to share his/her cultural and professional background with youth in Azerbaijan. A volunteer can participate according to his/her preferences in any sphere of our activities: to teach his own language, to teach some school subject, to help with leisure time activities, to organise the improving of the centre, to help with improving of local volunteers, local teachers, sport training for children, discussion clubs - intercultural exchange, trips to the country.
For example volunteer can assist to develop the program for summer camp, help to prepare local leaders for it. Volunteers can be involved in their own projects according their capabilities and preferences.
113
VOLUNTEER PROFILES AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS: We expect from volunteers in particular: a sense of humour, joy, enthusiasm and willingness to work with youth and children, experience in organizing activities for young people, a sense of teamwork, sensitive social conscience, willingness to learn new things and language, practicality and creativity. Independence, responsibility, flexibility and physical fitness can only be an advantage. The projects will offer to the volunteers the unique opportunities to learn and understand different cultures, to get rid of all sorts of prejudices, to support people less "favoured" by fate, to make something useful, to learn new things, to speak a foreign language and to explore their own limits, and to understand what volunteering means. All the above-mentioned aspects, taken altogether inside the project, will not only contribute to reach the set goals, but will offer advantages to the local community and to the participants to the project. It should also be considered, that in time, some of the beneficiaries from the volunteering activities will also become volunteers inside the organisation. In order to prevent the fact that some volunteers might abandon the activities, because of the urban location where there will be held, we will organise a schedule of active and interactive involvement inside the project, and in order to guaranty its applying and development without troubles, we will sign an activity agreement with EVS in which will be established and shared the duties, the schedule, the practical engagements, as well as the learning process and the objectives of teaching of the volunteer. follow the don Bosco's preventive education method which aims at development of person as a whole. In Slovakia SAVIO is active in raising awareness and educating people on development, human rights and peace issues, especially through nonformal education in schools, youth centres and other places, by publishing informational leaflets, posters, articles and other media programmes. It seeks to awaken public opinion to the values of international solidarity and cooperation for development. SAVIO fosters open and cooperative relationships between members of different cultures and helps diminishing prejudices and ignorance. It acts to develop the skills, attitudes and values in people both in developed and developing countries so that they can work together for a change - for a more sustainable and better world. SAVIO is cooperating with local communities of the Salesians of Don Bosco which are present in almost every developing country. Their work is highly valued in most of the places as they work hard on education of children and youth and achieve positive results in this field. The countries where SAVIO supports development projects include Slovakia (Roma communities), Azerbaijan, Russia (Siberia), Ukraine, Kenya, Sudan and Angola. Our primary target group is poor and marginalised children and young people living in bad conditions and having little opportunities for education and skills development or meaningful free-time activities. The secondary target group is people and general public in Slovakia that have possibilities to help these children and youth in need, either in financial matters or by other means including promotion and propagation of our development projects, project assistance and voluntary service. There is also a steady group of volunteers cooperating with our organisation in these matters. In our office there are employed two project managers and a project assistant. The NGO is further composed of the Board of Directors and a Chairman who is the legal representative of the organisation.

The centres cooperate with local Salesian community and the city they are situated in. All the centres of Domka provide many opportunitites for voluntary work in various fields. Volunteers of each age (usually of age 16 up) participate daily in leading of group meetings, workshops, sport activites, camps, trips, social and other activities. The centres with their activities are open for everybody who is interested in taking part in any activity as a participant or a leader no matter its religion, education, cultural background or nationality . They are open especially for those with poor social or economical background. Children and youth come to the centres after the classes in the afternoon and during the weekends and summer. Some of the centres are equipped with accommodation and catering capacities which would be enough for all the volunteers coming for the european voluntary service and home volunteers. If not, it is possible to arrange accommodatin and catering in nearby schools or catering facility. We do not rule out the possibility, the camp could take place in some facility in the central Slovakia. Half of the centres are located near Salesian community or are even physically connected with it. Community is represented by Salesians-priests, candidates and assistants who live in the community. It uses to be a house which is equipped with playgrounds, clubrooms, games which are for everybody. They take care of the house they live in, work with children and youth, help with coordination of the volunteers working in the centre, prepare different activities for children and volunteers and communicate with the local autonomy. The community is financed and supported by state, parents of the volunteers and children who attend the centre, benefactors, donors and through different grants, foundations and projects. Using and regular visiting of the centre is not based on the applying of special rules and conditions. The centres are open for everybody who is interested in any activity or would like to help with preparing and realization of some activitity. All the work in the centre is based on the mutual trust and friendly and open approach to everybody. Children and youth are taught to be polite, not to discriminate anybody and accept everybody irrespective of age, economical situation, colour of the skin, religion or nationality. Voluntarism in the community is accepted from parents, youth, adults, proffesionals in different fields and people of all age who are willing to take part in the work of Domka.

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers: The project will aim at developing individual skills of the volunteers in working in a multicultural set up and here with qualify the efficiency of the partner organizations. Learning by doing: The volunteer will get opportunity to work in a multicultural, a different social and economic background. They will develop simple skills and tips to work with children and teenagers. They will be aware of the youth situation in Slovak Republic, awareness of the unity in diversity, and a positive attitude developed towards it. They will learn to work together and have a positive group experience on a European level. As we are going to offer this program mainly to volunteers without the experience of travelling and staying in a foreign country we expect them also to gain a different and positive view of their own skills and character. Example of long EVS activity: The volunteers would be assigned to one of our centre. At the centre, there would be some mentor of this volunteers. The volunteer should part in everyday life of salesian centre, learning and using preventive educational system. The activities of our centre varies in plenty of different work. The main task would be to lead together with some Slovak volunteer some regular meeting with kids/youngsters. There may be also some additional task as there are lot of one-day activities for youth. This includes planning, preparing, leading, supervising and evaluating of all kind af short and long term projects. System of work is very similar to one described next. Example of summer camp activity: The volunteers will be paired and will be put in different groups. In every group there will be a an experienced mentor (worked before with volunteers) who speaks English who will personally help the volunteers to accommodate to the circumstances and the daily program. The mentor will help volunteers with language problems by explaining the program, giving details about the centre and its visitors during this project. The mentor can also be a link between other leaders and children, if there will be any uncertainties. This way they get opportunity to be actively involved in the activities all the time. We expect the volunteers to take part in each aspect of planning, carrying out and evaluating of summer camp for children in a way that will be suitable for them. Our program is divided into three parts: the first part is going to help the volunteers to get to know each other (as the will come from different European countries) and all Slovakian volunteers taking part in this program. They will also have the opportunity to help to think up and accomplish parts of the daily program of the camp. We are planning several cultural evenings, sports, excursions and having dinner together during this first period of time. The volunteers are expected to cooperate with other young Slovakian volunteers and youth workers (about 35 volunteers all together) to carry out the program and lead a group of children during the second part of the program. We expect 60 children from different parts of Slovakia for our program. We will divide children into small groups of 8-9 persons. The volunteers will be paired and put together in a group with two Slovakian volunteers. This way they would have an opportunity to get to know each other on another level too. In every group there will be an experienced mentor (worked before with volunteers and aware of the problems that may occur in this setting). In the program there is a good combination of serious work and leisure time. The third part of the program will include evaluation of the camp, finding a way how to cooperate in the future and sharing experiences. The volunteers will work together on planning and evaluation of the programs and therefore they will give an extra input to the camp activities and atmosphere of the activities. They will have a great opportunity to learn a lot from the simple methods of working in a multicultural situation. This is a simple but very effective working method which they could take home and implement easily in their working area. First of all young people fill in the general application form expressing their motivation. Then they will be prepared for coming to Slovak Republic with the help of the sending and host organization.
123
On their arrival there will be one day set apart to get know each other and to get all the practical information about the activities. There will be also a personal interview with one of the staff members of the youth centre in which the volunteer will be able to give his/her prefference of group. In planning, implementing and evaluating the activities the volunteers will be assisted by a mentor. This mentor will make sure that young volunteer has an active involvement in the activities. The programs are conducted for 9 whole days of camp. The volunteers are expected to work with other young Slovakian volunteers and youth workers to carry out the program for the children. The main task of the volunteers will be to prepare activities in the camp for children and assist in different groups during the days. Some may also get task to plan and assist one part of the program. Some volunteers will get chance to make photos and make a good presentation of photos for children and the parents. All volunteers will get an active and important role in the program. The partial tasks will be allotted according to their ability. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: Our project is open to young people (aged 18-26), who want to get some practical skills or get better know salesians. We would like to invite volunteers, who do not have many opportunities to visit different countries or are going to be first time abroad. These young people are not expected to be professionals in English language. But they need to know basic English grammar and vocabulary to be able to explain activities in appropriate way. It is welcome at least some experience in working with young people. We have already informed our partner organisations in Don Bosco Youth Net about the opportunity to join our projects. Participants will have to send filled application forms, CV and motivation letter. Local organisations will make the first selection by choosing two volunteers and sending their applications to our organisation. A team responsible for this project will choose volunteers who are the most suitable for our project according to their motivation and expected abilities. Organisational team will contact volunteers by email. Risk prevention, protection and safety: We have a multidisciplinary approach to risk prevention and crisis management. We have the ideology: Prevention is better than cure! A good communication will prevent most of the risks, problems. So well try to inform the partners and volunteers involved about about every part: our country, the project, activities, youth centre, the program of the camp etc. The sending organisation will prepare the volunteers to take up the challenges in a new country. It is a short group EVS of three weeks, so we do not expect major crisis. There will be a mentor for each group of the volunteers helping them with language problems or anything they may need. The coordinating organisation will also see to the practical arrangements and transport of the volunteers. Medical corps will be on set. We will specially request the sending organisation and volunteers to make us aware of the medical and health report of the volunteers and it will be put in the application form. Daily evaluation, we give them full opportunity to share their feelings, worries, tensions and expectations. A mentor will guide in this. There will be opportunity for different recreative programs, rest moments, cultural evenings, outings, etc. There will also be religious, councilling supports given to volunteers who require this. Regular contact with sending organisation via e-mail and regular telephone talks with sending organisation will also assist the volunteers. There is a standard procedure (protocol) by accidents, heavy psychological problems for children and volunteers who work for Domka.

Project environment: The volunteers will integrate into the activities which already work in the leisure-time and cultural association of Los Tilos for the the neighbours of the district of Los Tilos: for the children (playing room, handicraft, languages, painting, theater, campsites, etc.), teenagers (youth club, hip hop, brake dance, karate, judo, idiomas, theater, etc.) and adults (gymnastics, brain jogging, handicraft, cookery, film club, book club, etc.) in addition to other, open activities (gatherings, parties, etc.) which can be themed according to popular holidays (magosto, Christmas, Carnival) We believe that the cultural background, the different perspectives and ways of working, which an European Volunter could provide, would be very interesting for the different target groups: senior citizens, adults, teenagers and children and could inmensly enrich the work of the association. Local Community The leisure-time and cultural association Los Tilos is located in the urbanization Los Tilos, belonging to the parish church of Saint Francis of Assisi, in the town council of Teo, which is situated in the area of Santiago de Compostela, province in A Corua, Spain. The council of Teo comprises 16.428 inhabitants and has an expanse of 80 km. The urbanization of Os Tilos is situated approximately 4.5 km from the closest city, Santiago de Compostela. The people who live in the urbanization either work or spend the major part of their time in the aforesaid city. Santiago de Compstela is the main administrative and cultural center of Galicia, in which the government of the autonomous region resides. In addition to being on of the main cities in Galicia, the citys location permits a good connection to the rest of Galicias important cities. Santiago has approximately 95.000 inhabitants, eventhough the population doubles if you count the numerous students and workers. The city offers the main university of Galicia, being one of the eldest in the country, turns Santiago into a young and dynamic city. According to UNESCO decision in the year of 1985, the city was declared Cultural World Heritage and in 2000, Santiago was the European Capital of Culture.

The proximity to the seaside implies that the weather in Santiago and Los Tilos is pleasant and humid, typical for the North West of Spain, including a long winter with persistent rain and a short summer with very pleasant temperatures. In Galicia exist two official languages, Galician and Castilian, which co-exist in harmony without any major problems. The majority of the population is bilingual. The volunteers will live in Santiago de Compostela, in a shared flat with other volunteers (preferably of different nationalities) who are participating in the EVS in Santiago, or with young students or workers in Santiago, in a shared or single room. The flat offers everything which is necessary for living: washing machine, iron, coffee machine The flat is managed by the coordinating organisation and is in charge of paying all the expenses: rent, light, water, gas For the upkeeping the volunteers will receive a monthly allowance in order to buy groceries for preparing their own food. In addition to that, they will receive some money for buying the necessary things for the upkeeping of the flat: washing up liquid, washing powder, mops This allowance will be transferred at the beginning of every month or at the end of the previous. Project environment: We believe that free time is a privilege space for education, prevention and social intervention; and we are aware that society does not provide this time with educative contents that would enrich young peoples development. Children and young people are our target group, people with ages between 7 and 30 years, with a special attention to people in underprivileged situations for economic, cultural or social circumstances. These are some of our activities: The activities carried out in our youth centre are: ALTERNATIVA VAIVEN: A programme of activities of educative entertainment for children between 6-14 years. All Saturdays throughout the school year. It includes trips to the snow, to the beach, camping, begging of school year parties, Christmas party, carnivals, Peace act , summer camps This programme has different age groups: Cativos (6-10 years), Andaina (10-12 years) and ADS (12-years). There are also a number of after school activities: guitar courses, theatre, library, academic support and toy library. URBAN CAMP: Organized with another youth association and the House for Young People from Vigo. A city camp for children from 8 to 14 years. It takes place the first fortnight of August and every year around 550 children attend. PROJECT XINXIN: Intervention project with children between 6-14 years in risk of social exclusion derived from the Social Services of the City council of Vigo. It includes two educational support teams and a study room during the week, integration in activities of standardized entertainment, individual case monitoring, transports and food bursaries for participants. THE TOUPEIRA: A programme of the social inclusion of young people and education for the health that works with young people of 13 to 25 years. It is based on offering a room/bar that works as reference space, from which healthy attitudes and behaviours are promoted. It includes: Noites Alive (activities of nocturnal entertainment), a free Cyber cafe, sport activities, Point of Youth Information, campaigns of awareness, music, theatre... SOLIDARITY: Campaigns related to solidarity destined, on the one hand to cover a social need and
132

on the other to raise awareness among young people about the importance of involving themselves and of taking part in voluntary and solidarity actions. One of these is the food gathering campaign at Christmas. VOLUNTARY SERVICE: Raising awareness and promoting voluntary social action among the young people and training of the volunteers that join the association. Including: mini voluntary experiences, campaigns, courses. Vigo is the biggest city of Galicia and the northwest of Spain. It is located to the south of the Independent Community of Galicia, and is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, which has affected the activities of its population throughout history. Vigo is located on the ria with the same name on the slopes of mount Castro. Vigo is an industrial city, of recent expansion. The Port of Vigo is one of the main ports of transport of merchandise and travellers of the peninsula. The port along with the Factory of PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN are two of the main economic motors of the city. The Naval industry, (shipyard, fisheries...) contributed significantly to the growth of the city, although in the last years it has undergone some eonomic-social conflicts as a result of the international crisis and the progressive rationalization of the industry during the 80s and 90s. The population of Vigo is close to 300,000 inhabitants, although only 63 % of the present inhabitants have been born in the city. The great growth took place in a very short time (hardly 30 years), which resulted in a chaotic and disorganized urban plan difficult to catalogue. At present the city is undergoing a changing process, with significant increases of other sectors like the cultural one (the opening in the last two years of a museum of the sea, a Museum of Contemporary Art and a Museum House of the Word), the Tourist one, the recent implantation of a University Campus... Proposed activities for EVS volunteers As this is a centre for youth, the presence of young volunteers will contribute to a greater diversity and richness of our activities. Our main aim in hosting a European Volunteer is to promote the knowledge of Europe, and the programmes available to young people, among the young people of Vigo, and Galicia . On the other hand we believe it is a way of promoting among the European young people the knowledge and the relation with other different cultures that coexist within a same frame, Europe. We find it enriching to get to know different ways of working in the different countries from the European union. The presence of a young European volunteer on our centre will provide a a greater diversity and wealth to the activities we offer. The specific duties of the volunteer will be : 1. To take part in programming, action, tracking and assessment of the activities in which he or she is involved. 2. To work with other volunteers in the animation of the play group, library, cyber and the Toupeira: games, workshops, solidarity campaigns, awareness campaigns, music, theatre... 3. Contribute to animation subjects, programming and tracking of the activities of the children centre (cativos, ADS, Andaina): preparing materials, searching for resources... 4. Help the technical team in lending resources for the associations and volunteers. 5. Help other volunteers of the association in the special activities of the youth centre Abertal: Magosto(celebration of the chestnuts), Christmas, celebrations and special activities of the centre, popular summer camps, trips, folk festivals... 6. Helping the technical team and other volunteers in the different YiA dissemination campaigns: distributing leaflets, round tables, informative talks... 7. Developing a personal project related to some of the activities of the Youth Association Abertal.
133
The general schedule of the volunteer will be of 32 hours a week . The volunteer will have 2 free days free a week, apart from holidays. Holidays: 2 days/ month of project, in agreement with the centre. During summer the schedule of the volunteer will adapt to the activities of the centre: summer camps, trips to the beach, camping, Urban Camp... The volunteer will attend socio-cultural training sessions, during his or her stay. Profile of the volunteer(s) and selection process: Volunteer: someone who enjoys social work with children and young people in risk of social exclusion and leisure education. Young people with communication and social skills, enthusiastic, creative, with initiatives and values, who work with solidarity and with European identity. Training and experience in children and youth leisure activities, as well as experience as a volunteer are an asset. Selection process: 1. Pre-selection of candidates 2. The selected people will fill in a questionnaire about their motivation and themselves. There is a part to be filled in by the organisation. 3. A new selection takes place. We establish a date for telephone interviews to exchange further information. 4. Definite selection. All candidates are noticed. Number of volunteers hosted: 3 Special needs (if applicable): The Asociacin Xuvenil Abertal has experienced staff regarding monitoring and mentorship. EVS volunteers will constantly be supported by the mentor; they can contact him whenever they need it. In case of volunteers with special needs, and depending on their situation, an individual support plan and monitoring will be established, covering their needs and guaranteing the success of the project. Prevention of risks, security and protection: EVS volunteers will also be covered by our civil responsibility insurance during their activity. Volunteers will regularly meet with the mentor of the activities and a supervisor of the project (Asociacin Xuvenil Abertal), as well as with someone supervising the practical matters of the project.. According to the document published in 2000, crisis is defined as the extreme situation leading to a serious alteration of the development of an EVS project. Such crisis requires an urgent reaction, though, as far as possible, it should be prevented. " Many matters shall be taken into account to avoid risks, like, for example: Provide volunteers with appropriate support throughout the project (this includes sending and host organisations). Fluid communication between the organisations (host and sending) Clearly define the role and tasks of volunteers. Training, potential problems, illnesses, alergies,... shall be taken into account when organising tasks. The individual needs of volunteers will also be taken into account for food and accommodation; age and sex of volunteers will also be taken into account. The living conditions shall respect health and the according security rules. Regarding responsibility, health and security of volunteers will also be taken into account by the

person responsible of the project; EVS volunteers will be provided with the information, training and means. The person responsible will take into account these measures for possible changes or improvements. EVS volunteers are responsible for their own security and health, as well as for that of the people affected by their actions at work, according to their training and the instructions received. In case of emergency, illness, accident,...an appropriate protocol will be followed (known by volunteers since their arrival).

These projects can go as far as to organise activities as theater plays, dances, intercultural exchange, cookery of their country, music, language.
The beneficial effects on the local community and the contact is guaranteed, provided that more than 85% of the activities in which they participate are directly related to the local community. Project environment
Project environment: The territory of intervention of the Youth Association Amencer includes all the city, Ourense, since in our activities children (3 to 12 years old) and teenagers (more than 12) from the town and the periphery take part. Ourense is one of the 4 regions of Galicia, it is located within the same, and almost 110.000 inhabitants live here. Talking about the economic activity, most of the citizens work for the tertiary sector, although the secondary sector is important too. So, our socioeconomic contictions are very various, which we believe it is a very important wealth. In our activities a lot of children take part; they are children with good economic conditions, but with other important social deprivations, as well as children and young people from Minor Centres, Taking in Houses, Integration projects Drugs programs, etc.. One of the problems which we face is that boys and girls with economic difficulties of their families (unemployment, etc.) who can not enjoy leisure activities for lack of money. Actually the economic crisis is affecting all of Spanish society, and in particular to Ourense. Hence many of our offers are free and have a scholarship service to cater to this reality. If one or two volunteers came, the option to live would be a youth hostel where they could cook and that would be paid by our association. For the meals, we would give them a monthly allowance, advancing the first month for having enough money when arriving. We would stay with them the first weeks to show them the nearer supermarket, pharmacy, bakery,If there wasnt this possibility or if they were three volunteers, the association would rent a flat and give a monthly allowance to each volunteer for buying the food. In the same way, we would stay with them the first weeks to show them the nearer supermarket, pharmacy, bakery. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers: The volunteer would be in all the activities the leisure educator, animator with a methodology in the sense of involvement with the recipients, to promote good relations and good weather in the activity, watch for recipients with more difficulties, etc. We must also stress that each educator is included in an animation team where there is a coordinator and a variable number of volunteers who form the whole project team. For usto reach all the people is the key in this role, as well as complement and help in the same animation tasks. At the beginning, SVE volunteers are informed about all projects and activities of our Association, in coordination with the heads of the association, and considering, when it is possible, the centers interests of each volunteer / a, to choose the fields. They need not be at all, although occasionally they can help in other projects if it is necessary. 142

Volunteers/as participate in regular rhythm: mornings on administration and management of projects and activities (passing documents to computer, make copies, memories of the press, putting up posters and billboards, buy some material, etc.), "maintenance" (organization of rooms and replacement of materials activities) and support for campaigns and projects. All these tasks are related to projects in which they will participate (opened room, game room, educational support, leisure groups, etc.). Other kinds of activities that we conduct are also so-called special rate (one or two activities per three-month period): social awareness education campaigns, exhibitions, youth work activities in coordination with other entities and agencies of the city (Megaxove, organization parties, leisure activities during Carnival, Christmas, etc.), and participation in meetings of volunteers. The strong rate of activity in the association corresponds to the Friday evening and Saturday times when activities with groups of free time take place. SVE Volunteers will be active participants in these groups, and they will be shaded in each group. Some activities take place during some hours of the Friday afternoon, others in hours of Saturday morning. Every quarter there are several joint activities where children of all the groups participate. These activities take place on Saturday, and have full-day schedule (morning and afternoon). The opening room (Sala Aberta) is a space which combines several things: a small bar to meet guys and families, with soft drinks, water, snacks, jelly, chewing gum, pastries and coffee. In the morning it works like school bar but the volunteers do not participate in the morning. The room has tables and chairs, games, television, a magazine rack wide, exhibit, newspapers, etc, and on the ground floor we have a game room (with two football and tennis), a cyber space (with computers free use) and a playroom with games for children from 3 to 6 years. In the evening Sala Aberta works differently. It is open Monday to Saturday and it is a 100% education and entertainment space. The games room on the ground floor space is also a direct animation children, where we could chat and play with them. What we call proper management corresponds with administrative tasks and processing of documentation. These tasks are assumed by other persons engaged or having a better understanding of the functioning of the association. In addition, to the association com a lot of kids and parents to ask for information, to catch information, to make entries for activities, etc, Like any other volunteer, they can care for people, giving them information, collecting entries, etc. We may conclude by noting that volunteers combine regular management tasks, customer service and support for campaigns and projects with direct work activities with boys and girls. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process: The association has a variety of volunteers formed in the field of education (graduates in Teaching) and social branch (psychologists, social educators, pedagogues, etc.). Moreover, there are a large number of universitarians and others who are conducting studies in their final years of compulsory education. Finally, we would like to emphazise the direct involvement of some Salesian of Salesian community of Ourense in animation tasks of our association. Therefore volunteers profile would be quite wide, covering those with interest in animation in free time, all of them over 18 years and under 30. In addition, volunteers should know that in our youth center, apart from working directly with children and young people, they have to do other administrative activities, management, support campaigns, etc. And finally, we would like to point our Chistian profile, therefore, european volunteers should consider this aspect. But we always keep an open policy towards other faiths, so all volunteers interested in participate will be welcome, respecting their personal convictions. Number of volunteers hosted: 2 Risk prevention, protection and safety:

Project environment: The volunteers integrate themselves in the activities which already work in the socio-cultural center of Santa Fontias for the neighbours of the district; for children (pray-room, library, languages, puppets, story telling, handicraft .. .), teenagers (ping-pong, chess, languages, sports, dancing .. .), adults (expositions, dancing, fotography, cookery, yoga, excursions, city-tours .. .), public activities (journeys, videos), and activities related to the local and national holidays (Chestnut-Festival, Christmas, Midsummers Day .. .) We believe that the cultural background, the different perspectives and ways of working which are introduced by an European Volunteer could be very interesting for the different target groups: senior citizens, adults, teenagers and children and could immensly enrich the work of our social centre. Thereby we believe that it would be interesting to offer to the volunteers the possibility to participate in all the activities of the centre, so that they know the work procedure in general. Little by little they themselves will determine which tasks correspond most to their skills and preferences and in the course of time the volunteers will define a timetable which is adapted to their personal preferences, with consideration the necessities of the centre. Local community The council of Santiago de Compostela is located in this city as main administrative and cultural center of Galicia en which resides the government of the autonomous region of Galicia. According to the decision of the UNESCO, the city was declared world cultural heritage in 1985 and was the European Culture Capital in the year of 2000. Santiago has a population of approximately 95.000 inhabitants, eventhough this population is doubled if the numerous students and workers without citizenship are taken into account. The city offers the main university of Galicia, being one of the oldest ones of Spain, a fact which makes Santiago a young and dynamic city. In Galicia there are two main languages: Galician and Castillian which exist in perfect harmony without any problems. The majority of the citizens are bilingual. The proximity to the ocean implies that the climate in Santiago is pleasant and humid, typical for the north-east of Spain. Santiago has a long winter with lasting rainfalls and a short summer with pleasant temperatures. As this is a centre for youth, the presence of young volunteers will contribute to a greater diversity and richness of our activities.
