Childrens author visits Klager Elementary

Chillers creator explains importance of reading to kids
Amy Bell
Heritage Media

Reading is not something that you do. Reading is a place that you go. That statement was part of the message delivered by Michigan author Johnathon Rand to students at Klager Elementary School on March 7. Rand, author of kid favorites such as the Michigan Chillers series as well as the American Chillers series, Freddie Fernortner and Fearless First Grader, came to the school to speak to students as part of March Is Reading Month. He also conducted an afterschool writing workshop as part of his visit funded by the schools Parent Teacher Organization.

Spring weather reels in pancake lovers

Syrup artisans have trouble keeping up with diners orders
Nathaniel Siddall
Special Writer

Warm spring weather got the maple sap flowing, and brought out hungry diners, at McLennans pancake breakfast on Saturday. We had trouble keeping up, said Mike McLennan. More than one hundred breakfasts were served. Mike and Donnie McLennan started making syrup about 10 years ago, as a hobby. Now they have three evaporators and produce enough to sell, along with other local products, flowers, and landscaping supplies, at McLennan Gardens, on M52. This year, for the first time, customers were invited to breakfast, with seating in the store and in one of the greenhouses. After breakfast many of the diners took a

tour of the sugar shack, where maple sap is evaporated to make syrup. The McLennans friend Steven Hahne works as manager of McClennan Gardens, and says he is pushing marketing of the syrup. When he tasted it, he says, he realized you have a gem on your hands. Based on the success of the first pancake breakfast, Hahne is already planning next years event. There will be a surprise theme, he said, and the only clue he will give is the fact that boiling maple sap into syrup was first done by native Americans. Nathaniel Siddall is a freelance writer for the Manchester Enterprise.
