ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF STUDYING ABROAD Recent years, more and more people rush abroad for studying, especially students in college, high school and middle school, even a lot of children are sent abroad in their childhood. Many students nowadays prefer studying abroad compare to studying in their own country. In fact, the number of people studying or planning to study abroad has increased so rapidly that now it is very common to see several students walking in the campus of nearly any foreign country. If we ask students who got flying colours in their examination, most of them choose overseas to continue their studies whether in medical, engineering and so on. However there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad. Study abroad is the optimal way to learn a language and gain a lot of experience. There is no better and more effective way to learn a language than to be immersed in a culture that speaks the language you are learning. You're surrounded by the language on a daily basis and are seeing and hearing it in the proper cultural context. Language learning happens most quickly under these circumstances. Now, in our changing and internationalizing world, it has become even more important than ever to communicate with people around the globe. Living in a new any country, whether studying or working, you are not able to get by with your mother language therefore, you are forced to learn that countrys language. Other benefit of studying abroad would be the experiencing a different culture. Experiencing new cultures, interacting with those with a background different from ones own, seeing a different way of life, and experiencing the way other peoples do things is generally a positive, enhancing experience. Cultural differences are more than just differences in language, food, appearances, and personal habits. Getting to know a new country where you are staying, seeing a different way of life and experiencing the way other people do things such as the way

they talk and behave would encourage and nurture ones independence as well as equip the student with resourcefulness needed to be self-sufficient in a foreign country. A person's culture reflects very deep perceptions, beliefs, and values that influence his or her way of life and the way that they views the world. Students who experience cultural differences personally can come to truly understand where other cultures are coming from. However, studying abroad also can give disadvantages whether to government, students itself and also to their family. Studying abroad can get too expensive. Government has to spend a lot of money to accommodate their fees, cost of living and so on especially for the students who receive scholarship from MARA, JPA and so on. If I am not mistaken they got a lot of allowance such as clothing allowance, laptop allowance, tool allowance and so on. Besides, go and return tickets are also borne by the government. Can all of us imagine how much money that government has to spend for each student? I think it is about hundred thousand and above. But it is just for each student. How about 100 students, 1000 students and so on. If studying in our own country, government can save that money. Do not have much money to be released to accommodate the students who is studying abroad. Second disadvantages for students who studying abroad is they have to face unpredictable challenges such as war, natural disasters and so on. If these unpredictable challenges happen it would endanger our students life. Their family also got worried about their childrens safety. For example, about the upheaval in Egypt would endangered Malaysians students life. Government has to bring them back to keep their safety. As conclusion, studying abroad can give advantages and disadvantages depend on the students and situation. Maybe some students like to take challenges so they can study abroad.
