Germantown School Board approves list of goals and expectations

The Germantown School Board approved a list of goals and expectations for the board Feb. 25. School Board President Bob Soderberg described a goal tree which begins with the district purpose and is followed by three School Board goals, several objectives and metrics that will measure district progress on the goals. We all want to be held accountable, Soderberg said, explaining the goals and ways they will be measured. He said the board reviewed several versions of the document over two learning sessions. Why go down this path of having goals for the board? Soderberg asked rhetorically. We have goals for administration, we have goals for teachers, why not have goals for the board? In the purpose category, the vision is stated as The Germantown School District will be the school of choice in Wisconsin. Also in that category, the mission is listed as Empower and inspire every student to success. The three goals listed for the board are to: Enhance school and educator effectiveness; Enhance district effectiveness; and Enhance board member effectiveness. Each goal has several objectives. Under the enhance school and educator effectiveness goal are three objectives: Holding staff accountable for district goals, providing the tools necessary to fulfill the districts mission statement and establishing and evaluating programs that will encourage and enable the full academic, social and emotion development of each student. Under the enhance board member effectiveness goal are two objectives: Engage in self-driven learning opportunities and focus on positive, collaborative employee relations. The metrics listed from which the objectives will be measured included having ACT scores at 23.3 or higher, a graduation rate of 98 percent or higher, maintaining a fund balance of 12 percent of the overall operating budget, remain litigation free, conduct a facility study and create a five- to 10-year master plan, having each board member conduct one school visit per month and conduct an annual board self-evaluation. I do consider Germantown to be a high performing district, a school of choice, and the board needs to follow down that same path, Soderberg said. What better way of accomplishing that by raising the bar for my colleagues on the board. The board goals were unanimously approved. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Ongoing transition efforts explained to Falls School Board

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The School District of Menomonee Falls has become involved in one initiative to highlight the transition to the post-school environment for students with special needs and started another event to alert parents to other options as well. The School Board was updated March 11 on the two transition programs for special needs students. Kathy Zarling summarized the efforts of Project Search, which is sponsored by Easter Seals. Zarling said ProHealth Care and Childrens Hospital and the state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation have collaborated with the district on developing employability skills through internships. Beth Lohmann, director of workforce development for Easter Seals, explained that Project Search is a one-year program that began in the Milwaukee area in September 2012, with five Project Search sites across the state. She said the Project Search model was developed in 1996 by Erin Riehle at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital. According to Lohmann, Riehle believed that many of the hospitals customers are individuals with disabilities and she really believed the hospitals workforce should reflect the people that they serve. In addition, Lohmann noted that Riehle was struggling with turnover in her position at the hospital and wondered if it would be possible for young adults with disabilities to do tasks such as sanitizing, filing and stocking room work. Lohmann said there are currently 200 Project Search sites nationwide, with most of the sites in hospital settings. Lohmann said the program is staffed by Easter Seals, with a project search instructor who is a certified special education teacher. There are also career coaches that help the interns learn the job. She explained that Project Search seeks to develop employability skills, building these skills through the internships within the work setting and job development. Lohmann noted that during the first year of the program, four of the six interns were hired, while a fifth person was recently hired (the sixth person decided to go back to school). As you can see, its been successful in getting those individuals into employment, Lohmann said. Three of the interns then spoke of their experience working at Childrens Hospital. My confidence has improved since I started Project Search. Thank you for giving me this opportunity, said one intern, who worked in the human relations department. Another intern who worked in distribution services said, I learned very important job skills that I will be able to take to any job in the

future. I gained confidence in my communication skills with health care professionals. I learned how to become more independent because I was (doing) deliveries by myself, he added. In addition, the district held a Transition Fair March 13. Stephanie Schneider, a member of the committee that organized the Transition Fair, said it is intended not only for parents of special needs students in high school but those in earlier grades, also. Being a mom of students who have gone through this transition process, it comes really quick Schneider said. In addition, there were mini breakout sessions to explain how to develop the team to plan a childs transition. Karen Ritchie, a member of the committee, said another seminar would explain how special needs students are being integrated into the community to make the post-school transition seamless. District Transition Coordinator Tammy Thorlakson, when reached for comment by the Express News the previous week, said she was challenged by administration to develop our program to the next level. She said she learned about the Transition Fair concept and proposed the idea to administration. I was given full support, and the Special Education staff has been instrumental in helping to plan and organize as well, she said. Weve been working on it for about three

Dear Dr. Winter, I have severe bone loss in my lower jaw. I have 2 roots left in the front of my mouth. Is it possible to have bone grafting done in order to get dentures put in? Dear Sheri, you have some good questions and the ability to add bone when needed is important to place implants or mini-implants and protect vital nerve structures. That being said, I can not tell you if you require grafting prior to your dentures without seeing you and evaluating your existing teeth, roots and bone. Sometimes where you have the root tips, implants can be placed to stabilize your dentures and keep them from popping up and requiring a lot of denture adhesive to hold them in place during talking and chewing. So you may not need any grafting, you may want to learn about stabilizing your dentures and creating an Upgrade path to enjoy better denture stability and chewing. We can discuss this at your comprehensive examination visit. Dear Dr. Winter, I have a slight underbite, otherwise, my teeth are actually quite straight. I had braces on my top teeth at a young age (I believe 11/12), and as I grew up and matured I developed an under bite. This seems to have resulted in some unnatural wear and chipping on a couple of my top teeth. Do you have any non-surgery solutions available? Dear Ted, there are many options for fixing underbites that are non-surgical but I can not comment on your options until I have completed an examination and x-ray visit. Sometimes orthodontics can correct your problem other times crowns can be used to change your bite. So surgery is always the last option considered. We invite our readers to call our office at 414-464-9021 to schedule a complimentary consultation or new patient examination

KML theater wing taking shape

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Approximately a year after final approvals were given for a theater wing addition to Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School in the town of Jackson, the facility is beginning to take shape. During a March 6 interview and tour, school Superintendent David Bartelt said the project will be completed by the end of May, with the summer months to be spent fine-tuning technical aspects of the additional and completing outside landscaping. The addition includes a theater with 750 seats and six practice rooms for fine arts classes. The theater will be used for daily chapel services for students. Also, Bartelt noted that half of the schools student body is either in band or choir. Currently, practice for those activities occurs in one classroom throughout the day. With the addition, all those programs will have their own space and can expand. It is a big part of our culture the fine arts, Bartelt said. In addition to school activity, the theater will be available for use by outside groups We serve multiple communities outside of Jackson. We do hope that well be able to have events that all these communities will be able to come together on our campus and really enjoy the fine arts, Bartelt said. Well try to get some professional companies from Milwaukee to come up here to perform. That would be a great activity in a fantastic venue for our community. During the tour, the ceiling to the theater was in the process of being painted. As soon as the painting is completed, the acoustical clouds will then be installed. When that is completed, the seating and flooring will then be installed. Underneath the stage is a full basement that includes space for storage. In the front lobby entrance to the theater wing, there will be a granite donor wall. Instead of the names of donors, the wall will be adorned with words that are special to the donors for the project. The school is financing the project through bonds, and fund raising is ongoing. Bartelt said the goal of the school is to have the bonds be paid off in eight years rather than a longer period of time. Were really looking for $1 million a year from our donors, from the people who love the arts, that would be a significant partnership, Bartelt said. The project was designed by PlunkettRaysich Associates while construction is being undertaken by Catalyst Construction. So far, Bartelt noted that while a construction contingency has been built into the project to account for any unexpected situations, Catalyst has barely touched it. Theyve done really good job managing the project, making sure were on track, close to our budget, contingency has been excellent, Bartelt said. It is the fifth major building project for the school since it was first opened 40 years ago.

Defense lifts Warhawks to second title

BY TROY SPARKS CORRESPONDENT MADISON Winning a state championship in basketball last year was the ultimate goal for Germantown. Doing it again was twice as nice. The Warhawks won back-toback Division 1 championships with their 57-28 win over Mukwonago March 9 at the Kohl Center. Two other unexpected things went their way in addition to winning two titles in a row: Theyre undefeated for the second straight year, pushing their winning streak to 56 games, and senior Luke Fischer was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Wisconsin. Germantown (28-0) held Mukwonago (23-5) scoreless the last 5:23 of the game. They got by with great defensive effort and a lack of offensive firepower and still held the Indians at bay throughout the game. They won an ugly game, something the team isnt used to. "We like to play," Germantown Coach Steve Showalter said. "We like to run up and down the court. The game is beautiful. We love this game. To not be able to play our game and still figure out a way to come through, its a tribute to the type of kids that we have." In addition to the low scoring in the first half and poor shooting percentage (6-for-22), the Warhawks had to deal with foul trouble from their frontcourt, so Showalter went with a smaller lineup. "We had guys in foul trouble, Jon (Averkamp) and Evan (Wesenberg) who are our main defensive stoppers," Showalter said. "They were both struggling with fouls. We took a gamble that our small guys (would go) against their real big guys and might be able to bother them a little bit. I thought that Dearionte (Hudson) really turned the game around with his defense and Brian (Bearden) gives us a lot of help on both ends." That strategy helped in the second quarter when Germantown played a 2-3 zone to protect Fischer, Wesenberg and Averkamp, who had a combined seven of the nine first half team fouls. Fischer (four points) and Wesenberg (five points) scored more than half of Germantowns first quarter points to lead 15-7. That included 13 straight after Mukwonago took a 20 lead. Fischers layup early in the second quarter gave Germantown a double digit lead at 17-7. The Indians got no closer than seven points in the quarter to trail at the half, 25-18. "Being the only one coming back and having experienced this type of game, it was kind of a necessity for me to set the pace," Fischer, who had 11 first half points said. "(Mukwonago) pushed around. They were playing hard in the post, so it was tougher to get the ball in there. It wasnt like (state semifinal game) where I could just like float around and just have the ball lobbed up to me. I had to work for it." Lamonte Bearden and Jake Showalter struggled from the field, shooting a combined 1-for-7. Bearden didnt score in the half. That wasnt the case in Germantowns semifinal game. "We wanted Lamonte to have a really good game from the field, and he was 1-for-11 (in the game)," Showalter said. "We wanted Jake to light it up from outside. He was 1-for-5. I dont know what happened. Were used to scoring 80 points a game. Our guys were sitting on the bench and not making shots. I cant even explain what happened." There wasnt much scoring in the third quarter for Mukwonago as they struggled from the field. Their last field goal came at the 4:47 mark in the quarter. Germantown ended the quarter with a 7-0 run to lead 3622. The Indians scored just six more points in regulation. "(Germantown) do so many different things so well," Mukwonago Coach Jim Haasser said. "You try to take this away. They will burn you with that, so you got to kind of pick your poison. I thought the game was going real well for us. Had we sank some shots (9-for-43), what that would have done for the rest of the game might have been a little intriguing. " With less than three minutes left in the game, most of the fans at the Kohl Center began to leave when they knew the game was already decided. Senior guard Kendall Miller hit two three-pointers in a row, receiving jubilation on the sideline and going out as a winner. Some of the Germantown students removed their gold Tshirts to reveal their blue tank top shirts that said on the back, "State Champs, 2012 & 2013, Back-to-Back," which they revealed while the game was still in progress, not

knowing what the final outcome would be. Fischer led all scorers with 17 points and was the only one in double figures. Mukwonagos Dominic Cizauskas led the Indians with nine. Germantown, in their fourth appearance at state, is 2-2 and the 42nd undefeated team to win a state championship, which also included last years squad. Milwaukee King (2003 and 2004) and Oshkosh West (2006 and 2007) won back-to-back Division 1 championships, but neither team had back-to-back undefeated seasons.

Showalter, Fischer dominate in Warhawks semifinal win

BY TROY SPARKS CORRESPONDENT Germantown advanced to the WIAA Division I championship final following an 80-60 win over Oshkosh North in the state semifinal March 8. It took some time for Germantown (27-0) to get into their rhythm after they rebounded from a slow start and shook off some rust. The Warhawks rode the backs of 7-foot senior Luke Fischer, who had 32 points, and junior Jake Showalter, who tied a Division 1 record for 3-pointers made in the game with seven. He shares that record with Trevor Stratton of Wisconsin Rapids, who made 7-of9 in the 2005 state tournament. Jake Showalter exposed the zone defense that the Spartans played in which they took a gamble and lost. His first two three-point baskets gave Germantown a 6-2 lead with 6 minutes 21 seconds in an opening quarter that featured seven lead changes. "In practice," Jake Showalter said, "we worked on busting their 1-3-1 zone, and I knew that I could find holes in their defense. I knew that I could get my shot off a lot in the zone, and I think it helped our team (get going)." Showalters stroke from downtown came at the right time to help break a shooting slump he went through in recent weeks. Fischer used his height advantage to score 11 first quarter points. North (23-4) kept pace late in the quarter, clinging to a 20-19 lead. Junior Lamonte Beardens three at the buzzer gave the Warhawks a 22-20 lead and they never trailed again. Germantown used a 12-4 run in the second quarter to take a double digit lead at 3424 at the 5:30 mark of the half. Another 155 run late in the second increased their advantage to 20 points (49-29), the biggest of the half. And to delight the Kohl Center crowd again, Bearden made another buzzerbeater three for a 52-32 lead at intermission. Fischer had 19 first half points. "We were able to get some touches into Luke early," said Germantown Coach Steve Showalter. "Jake, obviously from the outside, really heated up in the first half. Once he started making some shots, they had to worry about him out there. We were able to attack their basket, and I thought our game plan worked out pretty well." The domination continued for Germantown in the second half as they had a 28-point lead in the third quarter at 67-39 with 3:29 left. "We knew it was going to be a pretty steep hill to climb, playing a very good Germantown team," North Coach Frank Schade said. "We felt that we might get by, by beating us from the outside. We just didnt think that (Jake) Showalter would get that hot. He really shot the ball well. But they were a better team. They were big and strong, and the big kid inside just changes all your preparation. Its pretty hard to prepare for a team like that when you got a kid that big." Showalter, who was 7-for-16 in threeShowalter said. "People told me that I was close (this game), but I wasnt sure if I got it or if I tied it, so I didnt really know. It didnt really click in my mind about the record. I just wanted to hit some threes." Bearden also contributed for Germantown with 13 points. Blake Marquardt led North with 17 points. A few minutes after the semifinal win, Coach Showalter was thinking about the next opponent, as Mukwonago and Milwaukee King played in the other state semifinal. "No matter who won the game (Between Mukwonago and King)," Showalter said in his postgame remarks, "we have to prepare all night (Friday) and all day (Saturday) during the day and be ready to play in this championship game." Mukwonago relied on their top two football-playing stars (Nate Tanguay and Dominic Cizauskas) in the starting lineup to play physical inside and slow the tempo of Germantown. "All year, we have been going up against six or seven guys in practice, just to try to break the press," Mukwonagos Nate Tanguay said. "We tried to slow the game down (against King), and I think thats what we did." The Indians were getting ready to go blow-for-blow with Germantown in the title game, March 9, despite not being favored to pull off the upset. "I guess being the underdog, we dont look at ourselves as an underdog," Tanguay said. "We always think that were the better team and the only team that can beat us is us."

point attempts, scored 21 points. The Warhawks shot 46% (10-for-22) from beyond the arc. Showalter had a feeling that it would be his night as he also reflected on the hot start from outside in last years state tournament (Nine threes made in two games). "I knew last year that I was close (to the Division 1 record for 3-pointers made),"
