SEAM ALLOWANCES & OTHER INFO Seam allowances on this style are 3/8" BUT please read the note in the TEST YOUR KNIT box below BEFORE you cut your top out. Skills needed include: making & applying a sleeve & neckline binding; making & applying a double-thickness knit waistband. Unless otherwise stated, all seams are sewn right sides together. ABOUT THIS STYLE This style has a semi-fitted silhouette, with a gently stretched waistband and cape overlay which is attached through the neckline; the top is sleeveless, and the hems and neckline are finished with self fabric binding. We recommend that you make & fit a test garment before you cut into your fabric... use an inexpensive or scrap knit with the same or a similar drape to your 'real deal' fabric. SUGGESTED FABRIC CUTTING LAYOUT FOR THE TOP lay fabric out flat for this layout

TEST YOUR KNIT! BEFORE you cut your top out, please test your knit fabric. Cut a test strip, using the sleeve binding pattern piece. Fold it in half lengthways, and gently stretch it. If the strip curls in on itself along the raw edges, you will need to do the following: On the neckline and armhole edges ONLY, add an extra 5/8" or 1.5cm to the depth of the (3/8" or 1cm deep) seam allowances. Add the same to each long edge of the neck & armhole bindings. This means that you'll be using a 1" or 2.5cm deep seam allowance around the neckline & armholes, which may sound crazy but trust us when we say it will be a whole lot easier to do this, then trim off the excess seam allowances, than battle away trying to attach the bindings as they are. FABRIC & NOTIONS REQUIRED All sizes need 2 and 3/8 yard/ 218 cm of 60"/150cm wide knit fabric...and that's all!

Prepare your binding...press the neckline and sleeve bindings in half lengthways, and LIGHTLY press flat.

3/8" or 1cm 1/2" or 1.25 cm

Work a narrow hem around the front and bottom edges of the cape...or leave the edges raw, they won't fray!

Join the waistband pieces together to create a loop. Press the seams open...

Using a 1/4' or 1cm deep seam, baste the neckline of the cape to the neckline of the top.

Remember the neckline binding you prepared earlier?

...then fold the waistband loop in half, so you have a double thickness loop. Set this aside until step 9.

Join the neckline binding to the neckline, stretching the neckline binding equally along the neck edge of the top to fit. Press the seam allowances downwards, towards the hem...

Repeat steps 3a & 3b with the neckline binding, to create a loop, Set aside until step 6.

...this is what the top should look like so far... Join the back to the front along the shoulder seams.

Press the seams open.

Join the armhole binding to the cut edges of the armholes ...you'll find that the binding will gather up the armhole edges ever so slightly, which is exactly what should happen!

Time to complete the top...matching the side seams of the top to the side seams of the waistband, join the waistband to the top, stretching the waistband as you go. Press the seam allowances towards the neckline.

Join the back to the front along the side seams, then press the seams open.

Et voila, instant cape-tank chic!
