They arrived at the home and the owner read the card; it said "Rest in Peace". The owner was angry and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist said. "Sir, I'm really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, "Congratulations on your new home".

Autistic Sensory Sensitivity A melt-down by an autistic child can be an exhausting event, both for the child, and for the carer, however they can be a common happening in the life of an autistic child. Such a melt-down can last from 10 minutes to in excess of an hour, and of course, after such an outburst, and the resulting exhaustion, the slightest provocation can trigger another. Whilst parenting an Aspie will require maintaining as normal a routine as possible in order to limit the likelihood of such a melt-down, there are certainly times when it is essential to vary from the known. With the incredible amount of flashing bright lights and sudden, unexpected loud sounds or strong odours in our environment, this can be very challenging for the child, and trigger just such a melt-down. Most people are conditioned to block out the extremes through an in-built sensory filter, but often the Aspie will be unable to do this. The sensitivity to light, sound and smell is therefore intensified. Of course, avoiding such environments would be an ideal solution, but it is important that we all manage to live in the environment that we have, and make the best of it. Providing strategies to adapt and cope with unusual circumstances can go a long way toward maintaining a peaceful existence for the autistic child and the family. Simple actions such as having sunglasses to reduce the effect of the bright lights, ear plugs to minimize the excessive sounds and a handkerchief with a calming familiar scent like orangeblossom

available may help the child to remain calm in such situations. One key to maintaining equilibrium in a family with autistic members is to implement intervention strategies as appropriate to the individual requirements of the child.
