BALI THE RIGHT WAY

G'day again punters and I hope you all got through the day of silence without too much fuss. I think the concept of a day of silence is great and maybe a few other places around the world should adopt something similar to help clear up the skies a little. At first I found it a bit strange to think that the powers that be, would shut down a complete system for just one day including the airport. I mean let's think about it to an unsuspecting traveller having a complete city shut down would seem like a bit of a waste of quality holiday time, but after so many years of being here you kind of look forward to a few days of quiet and relaxing at the pool or in front of the tele. Let's face it, the world wouldn't be a very good

aliasj@kutaweekly.com

place if we were all the same would it?? It was a crappy weekend just gone in the NAB cup as Collingwood lost to Brisbane, so I won't be talking about footy now until the season starts in two weeks. Be sure to get in and grab your spot in the Kuta Townhouses Tipping contest before the first bounce. Karn the Pies. We did get a letter from one of our many loyal readers this week which I will share with you all. The letter is as follows: Hello Aliasj, I read your page every week without fail and always look forward to seeing what you have to say about Bali each week. A while ago you wrote about the amount of rubbish that is left laying around the island and how the people in charge are trying very hard to keep the place clean which was a very good story. I am a long time visitor to the island and bring my wife and kids here every year at least two or maybe three times. My family and I had a few things to do for our last day here so we went and did the last minute shopping thing during which we stopped and had a bite to eat and a coffee to relax a little and cool down and while we sat and waited for our lunch I observed a tourist who looked like he was from Australia eating something while wondering down the street. After he had finished what looked like a burger he simply walked over to the roadside and trying very hard to be discreet, threw his food wrapper directly onto the street at the gutter and continued on his way. I question you this, how is the council of Bali supposed to keep the place clean if we as tourists do exactly what we are taught not to at home and throw our garbage where ever we want instead of using the bin?? I found it disgraceful that a fellow Aussie did this while on the lovely island with these lovely people and hope that you can maybe draw some attention to reminding all the tourists that come here to act as grown up while they are on holidays. Thankyou again for the fantastic articles each week and good luck. Keith & Sue from Perth. Thanks for the letter Keith and yes you are correct with many of the tourists that come here not doing the right thing and putting their rubbish in a bin. To say that they are all Aussies would be incorrect as I'm thinking that all walks of life that travel here are on occasion forgetting to do the righty. I guess you can tell an Australian by the Bintang tank top and braided hair which is a dead giveaway, and sometimes you will see the younger ones walking the street with a beer in hand much too early in the morning for me. At the end of the day, No matter where you come from you must always be sure to dump your rubbish in a bin and not just throw it out to the street when you are done. We all need to be part of the solution and not be the problem. Bali is a magnificent island and its people cater for tourists very well, so while you are here, you must try to do the right thing and lead by example, in this instance if that means putting your rubbish in the bin then please just do it. Maybe the powers that be can investigate an on the spot fine for litter bugs and run it the same as they run the little parking doods outside many busy shopping centres. My guess is they will earn more from the litter fines than the parking charges. Thanks again for the letter and please keep them coming. Ok folks I think that's enough for one week and it might be time to go do something different and kick back, relax and have a few quiet ones in a shady spot for a while. I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, If you can't explain it simply, then you don't understand it well enough. Enjoy your week, ALIASJ..

BALI, LOCATION TO SUIT EVERYONE

JIMBARAN
Jimbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tiny fishing village with a daily market. That all started to change in the 1980s and Jimbaran is now home to several world class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few more moderate mid-market hotels. There is however little in the way of budget accommodation and there are also many high-end villas in this area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above Jimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the "Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row". The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beach and is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilled seafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist draw in the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset. Jimbaran is also home to a Norwegian University, Gateway College, with around 500 students studying athletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism. The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari Segara Resort and in Jl, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe. Jimbaran has an increasing number of rather chic shops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has the advantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyak and the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

THE BUKIT
Much has been written about this dusty, arid and rugged area, which forms the southern most tip of the island. Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters in height provide some of the best views in the world, along with some deserted white sandy beaches. Everyone wants a piece of this are, from international hotel chains such as Bvlgari, Versace and Banyan Tree, to established residential villa developers looking for that perfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons why this is fast becoming the place to be. Prices have more than tripled in the area over last 2 years alone with still plenty of potential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only a short 15 minutes drive from the international airport, The Bukit is fast being referred to as the new Millionaires Row.

Estonian Couple Caught Having Sex in a Balinese Temple Tell Bali Police They Didn't Know that Sex in Public Places Was Against the Law
Widely reported in both the Bali local and international media are an Estonian couple taken into custody in Bali after they were discovered having intimate relations inside the grounds of M e n g e n i n g Te m p l e n e a r Saraseda, Tampaksiring. The Island's temples are deemed to be sanctified places of purity by Bali Hindus where any of a range of impure acts, including sexual relations, can bring the subject place of worship into disrepute and threaten the safety and well being of the surrounding community. When he heard of the incident involving Estonians Urmas Silman (43) and his wife Katrin Silman (32), a member of the Indonesian Tourist Promotion Board (BPPI), Nyoman Kandia, said, They (the Estonian couple) must receive an appropriate punishment, including deportation. This is needed to make an example of them for all tourists visiting Bali. Kandia said that such behaviour is intolerable and should be punished both by the central government and in accordance with traditional law. A professor of law at Bali's Udayana University, Professor Dr. IGN Wairocana saw the couple's action as an insult to all Balinese Hindus, adding: This case can be developed into criminal charges. If traditional sanctions (awigawig) cannot not be brought to bear because they are foreigners,

discussions at the police station, the couple agreed to donate Rp. 20 million (US$2,000) towards the cost of the ceremonies now required to rededicate the temples. Local religious experts are in agreement that the actual cost of the required ceremonies will far exceed the compensation paid by the Estonians. When he learned of the incident, the former regent of Gianyar and chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association, Dr. Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati (Cok Ace), said he deeply regretted what had happened. He suggested that all parties should learn and visitors to Balinese should all be briefed on the parameters of acceptable behaviour at places of religious importance. Many Balinese temples post signs at their entrances, warning visitors in an impure state not to enter the temple grounds. This is normally seen as an entry prohibition against people in a state of mourning due to a recent death in their immediate family or against menstruating women. While warnings do not specifically state that acts of sex are forbidden on temple grounds, most nations, including Indonesia, have laws on public decency. According to Denstu Communication Institute, Inc. Estonia ranks as one of the least religious countries in the world, with 75.7% of its population claiming to be irreligious that is to say, indifferent or hostile to religion. A 2005 toll said only 16% of all Estonians profess a belief in a god.

Enshrined Stupidity
at the very least they should be reported to their embassy or consulate. Wairocana said that in order to restore the sanctity of the temple, the regency of Gianyar should pay the cost of the elaborate religious ceremonies this entails. Let's not have every tourist in Bali and who commits a similar act be able to claim they didn't know such acts are wrong. The police must take firm actions."

The best option for you will depend on your personal situation, the type of property, risk factors and the type of investment model. Even though it states in Indonesian law that foreigners are not allowed to hold a 'freehold' land title, there are ways that have been in practice for a number of years that enable foreigners to control a freehold title indirectly or to hold a leasehold title in their own name.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIK

This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner. Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee. The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

Buleleng Authorities in North Bali Round Up Street Beggars
The regional government in Buleleng, North Bali took steps to curtail street beggars when they took 29 panhandlers into custody. Local enforcement officials apprehended 29 beggars from Tianyar Village in Karangasem who were working the streets of Lovina and the area in front of the Kampung Tinggi Freight Terminal in Singaraja. Upon arrrest, the 29 street beggars had their personal data recorded for future reference. The head of the local enforcement authority (Polisi Pamong Praja) for Buleleng, Putu Hartana, said his office has received numerous complaints from the public and visiting we often receive complaints that the beggars try to force donations, prompting us to arrest them. At the time of their arrest and while they were being loaded into trucks for further processing, many of the beggars tried to resist. In addition to names and addresses being recorded by the authorities, pictures were also taken. In the process, Hartana explained, we found three familiar faces caught in previous sweeps. The beggars were warned not to return to Buleleng and then sent to the Social Departments Hall to later be driven back to their home villages. Authorities promise that if they return to Buleleng they will be processed through the courts.

ALL ABOUT BALI

BEDUGUL
Bedugul is an area in the mountain range of Central Bali. Bedugul is the name used to cover a large area of the central highlands of Bali around the villages of Bedugul itself, Candikuning, Pancasari, Pacung and Wanagiri (amongst others). This is an area of great natural beauty. The focus point of the area centres on the three crater lakes of Bratan (Beratan), Buyan and Tamblingan, and the nearby botanical gardens. The whole area is at an altitude of 700 metres or more, with the tallest mountain peaks above 2,000 metres, and it can be distinctly chilly here. Bedugul is located about 50 km north of Denpasar on a main route from South Bali to North Bali. Verdant rice terraces and valleys at Jatiluwih Bali Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Eka Karya), One of Indonesia's four official botanical gardens. Located in Candikuning. The entrance road is identified by the presence of a giant stone corn on the cob statue! From the information centre buy a copy of an excellent little pamphlet called Six Self Guided Walks in the Bali Botanical Gardens and set off on your way. The gardens are huge covering some 160 hectares and any visitor with an interest in plants and trees could easily spend a whole day here. Jatiluwih A startlingly beautiful area of verdant, terraced rice paddies nestled in the shadow of Mount Batukaru. Take your time and explore thoroughly. There are a number hikes thorough truly stunning terrain. When you have had your fill there are a couple of cafes for refreshment (and yet more views). In 2007 this was nominated as a UNESCO world heritage site. Munduk Waterfall. These falls are impressive and really roar in the wet season. A spot that is little visited, despite being perhaps the most impressive accessible falls on the whole island. Pura Ulun Danu Bratan (Lake Bratan Temple), Lake Bratan, Bedugul. After Tanah Lot, this is perhaps the most photographed temple on the island and is certainly one of the iconic images of Bali. The temple sits on the western shore of Lake Bratan and it can give the illusion of actually floating on the water. Built in 1633, the temple is devoted to Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu, goddess of the lake. A beautiful temple in a truly stunning setting. Explore the mountain roads and take in the wonderful views. The area around Munduk to the west of Lake Tamblingan is especially spectacular, and you can continue the drive through Munduk village to Banyuatis and then all the way to Seririt near Lovina on the north coast. Play golf at Bali Handara Kosaido Golf and Country Club, At an altitude of 1,142 metres and surrounded by green mountains, crater lakes and ancient forest, this Peter Thompson designed course is considered one of the very best in Asia. Cloves drying by the roadside in Munduk Birdwatching is good in this area around the lakes, and in the botanical gardens where some 97 species have been officially recorded. A number of scarce montane species are to be found here. Water sports on Lake Bratan. Parasailing, speedboat rides and jetskis are all available if you are comfortable with polluting such a beautiful lake. The more environmentally conscious may wish to restrict their lake activities to renting a rowing boat. These are all controlled from Taman Rekreasi Bedugul on the southern shore of Lake Bratan. Trekking in the mountains and around the lakes is very rewarding. There are regular, organised group departures from Taman Rekreasi Bedugul at Lake Bratan and the Botanical Gardens. If you require an individual guide for your own planned trek, your hotel will be able to help or ask at Taman Rekreasi Bedugul. Popular organised treks include: Climbing Mount Catur (2,096m), starting at Taman Rekreasi Bedugul. This is quite a stiff climb. Around Lake Tamblingan, returning by canoe. A very leisurely trek. Around Jatiluwih with options from a 2 hour stroll to a stiff 8 hour trek. The Munduk area is also popular and extremely scenic. Angseri hot springs lies about 20km to the south of central Bedugul. From the main market head directly south. Bali Treetop Adventure Park Understand the crops. Interesting crops grown in this area include coffee, vanilla, cloves and cacao. Once you know them, you will see clove trees everywhere at the side of the highland roads. There are several coffee plantations on the roads north of Lake Bratan and around Munduk. Bali Treetop Adventure Park, at the Botanical Gardens. The park includes six main circuits that stretch from tree to tree, as well as nets, Tarzan Jumps, and bridges. Each run also features "Flying Fox" ziplines of up to 160 metres, providing heart-pounding thrills to guests as they fly through t h e a i r. Baseball-sized snail destroyed in Australia to protect crops

A baseball-sized snail with an insatiable appetite for hundreds of plants including cocoa and papaya has been seized and destroyed by Australian officials, who said it posed a huge threat to local agriculture.
T h e animal was found creeping a c r o s s a B r i s b a n e s h i p p i n g container yard and identified as a giant African snail, an East African pest capable of growing up to 30 cm (12 inches) long and one kg (2.2 lb) in weight. It is known to eat 500 different species of crops, fruits, native Australian plants and even other giant African snails, according to an Australian enemies in Australia. It also carries parasites that can infect humans with the disease meningitis, which can in some cases be fatal. The last major Australian outbreak of the snail was in 1977, when 300 giant snails were exterminated in Queensland in an intensive eight-month c a m p a i g n o f community education, baiting and snail collection. The snail was destroyed and officials inspected the container yard and found no evidence of additional snails, eggs or snail trails. They will continue surveillance into next week. Students at an Israeli high school were in an uproar after a teacher mistakenly sent them an internal email that spelled out what faculty members really thought about them.

The list, which also contained praise for a number of students, was compiled by teachers as a guide to potential misbehaviour by the teens due to take part in a school visit to Holocaust sites in Poland, a trip that has become a rite of passage for many Israeli youngsters. One of the teachers inadvertently copied the list to students who signed up for the trip, the school said.

Cemetry.
On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. 'One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,' said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, 'One for you, one for me, one for you, One for me...' He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. 'Come here quick,' said the boy, 'you won't believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!' The man said, 'Beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me to walk.' When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, 'One for you, one for me. One for you, One for me.' The old man whispered, 'Boy, you've been tellin' me the truth. Let's see if we can see the Lord... Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord. At last they heard, 'One for you, one for me. That's all.. Now let's go get those nuts by the fence and we'll be done.... They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him.

The Execution.
Three women go down to Mexico one night to celebrate college graduation. They get drunk, and wake up in jail, only to discover that they are to be executed in the morning, though none of them can remember what they did the night before. The first one, a redhead, is strapped in the electric chair and is asked if she has any last words. She says: "I just graduated from Trinity Bible College and believe in the almighty power of God to intervene on the behalf of the innocent.." They throw the switch and nothing happens. They all immediately fall to the floor on their knees, beg for forgiveness and release her. The second one, a brunette, is strapped in and gives her last words. "I just graduated from the University of Illinois School of Law, and I believe in the power of Justice to intervene on the behalf of the innocent." They throw the switch and again, nothing happens. Again, they all immediately fall to their knees, beg for forgiveness, and release her. The last one, a blonde (you knew it), is strapped in and says: "Well, I'm from Ohio and just graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and I'll tell ya right now, y'all ain't gonna electrocute nobody if you don't plug this thing in."

winter, whereas infertility cases related to low sperm counts should be encouraged to choose spring and fall," the researchers wrote. Previous studies, mostly in animals, have found similar results in line with those species' breeding seasons, said Edmund Sabanegh, a urologist who was not involved with the new research. "The hard part of this is really sorting out what factor is accounting for this," said Sabanegh, the chairman of the urology department at Ohio's Cleveland Clinic. In animal studies, seasonal changes in sperm production and fertility have been linked to factors ranging from temperature, to length of daylight exposure and hormone variations. Among people, previous research has found that sperm counts around the world are falling. While no one knows why, theories range from a more sedentary lifestyle to chemicals in the environment that affect sperm health. Sabanegh said he doesn't think doctors will start telling men with low sperm counts to wait until the winter or spring to try to conceive a child. "We would continue to encourage them to try regardless of the season, and they may benefit from interventions or treatments."

Even for sperm, there is a season

Autumn is the time of year most associated with bumper crops of new babies, and according to an Israeli study there may be a scientific reason for it: human sperm are generally at their healthiest in winter and early spring.
Based on samples from more than 6,000 men treated for infertility, researchers writing in American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology found sperm in greater numbers, with faster swimming speeds and fewer abnormalities in semen made during the winter, with a steady decline in quality from spring onward. "The winter and spring semen patterns are compatible with increased fecund ability and may be a plausible explanation of the peak number of deliveries during the fall," wrote lead researcher Eliahu Levitas from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva. If there is a seasonal pattern, they said, that knowledge may "be of paramount importance, especially in couples with male-related infertility struggling with unsuccessful and prolonged fertility treatments." For the new study, Levitas and his colleagues collected and analyzed 6.455 semen samples from men at their fertility clinic between January 2006 and July 2009. Of those, 4,960 were found to have normal sperm production, and 1,495 had abnormal production, such as low sperm counts. The World Health Organization defines anything over 16 million sperm per millilitre of semen as a normal sperm count. Taking into account the approximately 70 days it takes for the body to produce a sperm cell, the researchers found that men with normal sperm production had the healthiest sperm in the winter. For example, those men produced about 70 million sperm per millilitre of semen during the winter. About 5 percent of those sperm had "fast" motility, or swimming speed, which improves a couple's chance of getting pregnant. That compared to the approximately 68 million sperm per millilitre the men produced in the spring, of which only about 3 percent were "fast." For men with abnormal sperm production, however, the pattern didn't hold. Those men showed a slight trend toward better motility during the fall and made the largest percentage of normal shaped sperm about 7 percent during the spring. "Based on our results the (normal) semen will perform better in

A minute's silence was impeccably observed by the 21,935 crowd for former Tigers under 20s player Mosese Fotuaika, who passed away recently, and it appeared to motivate Potter's side early in the match. But the Knights, inspired by Uate and two former Brisbane Broncos in Darius Boyd and Gagai, took control to effectively seal the victory before half-time. Ex-New South Wales winger McManus dived over in the 10th minute after hauling in a fine cut-out pass from Boyd and the Queensland star looked to have increased the advantage only to spill the ball as he crossed the line. But that proved to be a minor aberration when Uate started and finished the move for the second fourpointer. The Blues star caught the ball on his own 10-metre line, shrugged off three feeble tackles as he raced 50 metres and was then on hand to pick out Gagai's pass to go over in the right corner. Gagai then scored two quick-fire tries with Gidley kicking four goals to open up a 24-6 lead at the break. The second stanza followed a similar pattern with the Knights dominating as the Tigers fell apart, giving up two more Uate tries within nine minutes of the re-start. McManus added his second just before the hourmark when he outjumped the diminutive Matt Utai and grabbed Jarrod Mullen's kick with Gidley's conversion bringing up the 40-point mark. Moltzen stretched to score on the siren to give the Tigers a late consolation. The Knights' promising start was tempered by a wrist injury to Mullen, who left the field midway in the second period.

Not sure how to deal with this issue. I have been seeing this guy for almost a year now he is almost a live-in at my villa. He has a lot of personal stuff at my place. A few weeks ago I saw three condoms in his back pack in an open pocket. A few days later we are both in my room, and I notice him zipping that particular pocket. I did not say anything at that time. This past weekend, I went away for the weekend. He planned an evening out with friends on Friday. He told me about his weekend and evening out. When he left, I could not hold back from checking if the condoms where still there. All three were gone. Since them I am questioning this fact. I know he has cheated on some of his past girlfriends. Did he take them out of his bag at his home so I do see them and question if he is faithful? Did he give them to his friend with whom he stayed all weekend since he was seeing his girl on Saturday? Should I bring this up? Will I seem paranoid? All I am sure of is that I do not want to have a cheating boyfriend. He says he loves me, seems to love me, is with me most of the time, he says he spends all his time with me because that it where he wants to be. He kept texting me he missed me throughout the weekend. How should I deal with this situation? Michele Dear Michele, Missing condoms don't always mean cheating dear. There are at least two other explanations. The first is he thought he might persuade you into sex outside the home and tucked a few condoms in his bag in the hope it was going to happen on the back

Did he take them out of his bag at his home so I do see them and question if he is faithful? No, he didn't. There is no earthly reason a man would want to create a storm of bad ju ju like this in his own home. Did he give them to his friend with whom he stayed all weekend since he was seeing his girl on Saturday? No. Blokes of a certain age don't do that for each otherunless they are members of a virgin cult and will get in trouble for buying their own. They're not 15. It's not 1962. A man can buy his own condoms. Should I bring this up? Will I seem paranoid? You might seem paranoid but you will need to bring it up eventually. The problem for you is if he's guilty he will probably spin you a story so you have to be able to know he's spinning a story because you've been counting condoms or have collected other evidence or just be good at seeing through bulls** He says he loves me, seems to love me, is with me most of the time, he says he spends all his time with me because that it where he wants to be. He kept texting me he missed me throughout the weekend. Guys can love their girlfriend and still cheat. I don't know why but they do. His attentiveness is not a sign he is not cheating. It might even mean he was guilty. But it also doesn't mean he is. Martha

will always find it very hard to accept being suspended from a Test match for my country," Watson said. "I've missed a lot of Test matches and games through injury throughout my career and I also feel like I've worked my absolute bum off as well to have an opportunity to be able to represent my country." Watson added that while he was disappointed to miss out on the third Test, he was happy to be home with his pregnant wife. "This has obviously happened in my life for a reason, so that I can come home," he said. Meanwhile Australian Twenty20 c a p t a i n G e o r g e Bailey says h e h a s experienced n o behavioural problems within his side. "[During] my time in the Australian cricket team the standards have been very very high and certainly something that I always aspire to bring back to state cricket," he said at Bellerive Oval ahead of Tasmania's Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria. "It's always been a step up for me, no doubt about that, and I imagine it would be whichever format you play."

Watson denies rift with Clarke

Australian vice-captain S h a n e Wa t s o n h a s denied any rift with skipper Michael Clarke and strongly rejected suggestions he is not a team player after being axed for one Test for "Just go round and ask every indiscipline. person that I've played cricket
The 31-year-old returned to Sydney from the tour of India after he was dropped for failing to prepare feedback on how the team could improve and deliver it to management. Three other players received t h e s a m e punishment. There have been persistent rumblings that Watson and Clarke do not see eye to eye, but the allrounder said it was nonsense. "I've been playing cricket against and with Michael Clarke since I was 12, so we've got a lot of history as people," he said. "Obviously we are quite different people in certain ways and we're very similar in a lot of ways as well. "Like you do in every relationship, it goes up and down and things are going really well at the moment with me and Michael." Cricket Australia general manager Pat Howard has made it clear Watson must start toeing the team line if he is to continue playing Test cricket and implied he was not always a team player. with and that will give you the best indication of whether I'm a team man or not," Watson said. Khawaja and Mitchell Johnson had been suspended, Clarke said the decision was the culmination of a general slide in attitudes on the Indian tour. Australia, which faces an Ashes double-header against England starting in July, trails 2-0 in the four-Test series in India. Watson felt the punishment was overly harsh but acknowledged he was wrong in not completing the review required from all the players. "Down Under" (also known as "Land Down Under") is a Platinum-certified single recorded by Australian New Wave rock group Men at Work. It was initially released in October 1981 as the second single from their debut album Business as Usual (1981). The song went to number one in their home country of Australia in December 1981, and then topped the New Zealand charts in February 1982. Released in North America in mid-1982, the song topped the Canadian charts in October. After initially being ignored in the US, the song then charted in America some months later, finally hitting the top spot for four weeks in January 1983. In the UK, the song topped the charts in January and February 1983, and is the only Men at Work song to make the UK top 20. The song also went No. 1 in Ireland, Denmark and Switzerland, and was a top 10 hit in many other territories. It has become a popular and patriotic song in Australia. Background and writing Colin Hay told Songfacts "The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the over-development of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It's really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that." Content The lyrics are about an Australian traveler circling the globe, proud of his nationality, and about his interactions with people he meets on his travels who are interested in his home country. One of the verses refers to Vegemite sandwiches, among other things; the particular lyric "He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich" has become a well-known phrase. Slang and drug terms are used in the lyrics: Travelling in a fried-out Kombi, on a hippie trail, head full of zombie. Here "fried-out" means overheated, Kombi refers to the Volkswagen Type 2 combination van, and having "a head full of zombie" refers to the use of a type of marijuana. Cultural slang is also used after the second verse the refrain is "where the beer does flow and men chunder" "chunder" means vomit. Cultural significance The flute part in the song was based around the tune of "Kookaburra", a well-known Australian children's rhyme. Originally, "Down Under" was released as the B-side to "Keypunch Operator", a rare custom-pressed single by Men at Work; some of the guitar melodies from that version were further developed into flute parts on the later release. The exterior shots for the music video were filmed at the Cronulla Sand Dunes outside of Sydney. The video also features several litre-size cans of what appear to be Foster's Lager (although the brand is removed), a beer drunk mainly outside Australia while being marketed as Australian. The song is a perennial favorite on Australian radio and television, and topped the charts in the U.S. and UK simultaneously in early 1983. It was later used as a theme song by

Men At Work

the crew of Australia II in their successful bid to win the America's Cup in 1983, and a remixed version appears during the closing credits of Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. Men at Work played this song in the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, alongside other Australian artists. It was also often played after Australian athletes had received medals during competition, as they walked around the venue on a parade lap after the medal ceremony.] In May 2001, Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) celebrated its 75th anniversary by naming the Best Australian Songs of all time, as decided by a 100 strong industry panel, "Down Under" was ranked as the fourth song on the list. The song was ranked number 96 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 1980s in October 2006.
Lyrics Travelling in a fried-out combie On a hippie trail, head full of zombie I met a strange lady, she made me nervous She took me in and gave me breakfast And she said, "Do you come from a land down under? Where women glow and men plunder? Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? You better run, you better take cover." Buying bread from a man in Brussels He was six foot four and full of muscle I said, "Do you speak-a my language?" He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich And he said, "I come from a land down under Where beer does flow and men chunder Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? You better run, you better take cover." (Yeahhh!) Dying in a den in Bombay With a slack jaw, and not much to say I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me Because I come from the land of plenty?" And he said, "Oh, you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah) Where women glow and men plunder? Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (ooohh) You better run, you better take cover." We are.. Livin' in a land down under, Where women glow and men plunder, (yeahhhhhhhhhh) Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (thunderrrrr!) You better run, you better take cover. Livin' in a land down under, Where women glow and men plunder, Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (oooo yeahhhh!) Then I run, and then I take cover. (yea) We are... Livin' in a land down under, (underrrr) Where women glow and men plunder, Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (oooo da da laa yeahhh!) Then I run, then I take cover.

Sinkhole opens up in Washington and jaded humour emerges

on larger proportions as Washington is used to being the brunt of jokes, particularly chatter erupted on social media. "A sinkhole has opened in those centred around the Washington D.C. Last to push action, or lack of it, on Capitol their congressman in is a rotten Hill. But the focus moved to the Adams Morgan neighbourhood, where some saw a symbol of Washington a gaping sinkhole in the middle of a bustling sidewalk. Unlike the fatal sinkhole that swallowed a man as he slept in his Seffner, Florida, home on February 28, or the one a golfer fell into on an Illinois fairway earlier this month, the Washington sinkhole is more on the order of a large pothole. Surrounded by yellow tape, it is about a yard (meter) square, as deep as 10 feet and sits a few miles from the White House, another frequent source of late-night television humour. But the sinkhole quickly took because about 20 percent of the United States sits atop what is known as karst terrain, regions where rock below the surface can be naturally dissolved by groundwater. Hot areas for sinkholes are Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. In a city like Washington, they can be traced to something as innocuous as a leaking pipe that erodes sediment below the surface, Kaufmann said by phone from Rolla, Missouri. They also are common after long dry spells followed by rainy periods. Even Kaufmann initially saw the humour in Washington's encounter with the phenomenon. "It's not on Capitol Hill, is it?," he asked.

Bombers hoping to limit doping fallout

Essendon midfielder Brent Stanton says there are reasons for optimism that the AFL club will not face the same sort of fallout that has enveloped NRL club Cronulla over an antidoping investigation.
The Sharks have sacked several officials and a number of players have reportedly been urged to sit out of the game for six months or risk a longer ban as they deal with an ASADA investigation. The Bombers are also being investigated by ASADA (the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority), over their supplement use last year when they employed sports scientist Stephen Dank, who was previously with Cronulla. Stanton said he did not know details of the Cronulla case. But asked whether Essendon, whose decision to volunteer information to the AFL prompted ASADA to investigate them, had reason for "cautious optimism" that their case would have a different outcome, Stanton said that might be the case. "Possibly - it's a whole different investigation," the midfielder told reporters at the club's family day. "We opened up our doors to be investigated. "We're doing everything possible to try to get that process under way and we're fully cooperating. "I think the AFL and ASADA are doing their job - so are we." Stanton refused to say whether he had been interviewed by ASADA officials. But he insisted the coaching staff and players were not distracted from preparing for the season-opener against Adelaide on Friday week. "Yes, there might be a little bit of outside talk that other stuff is going on at other clubs," he said. "But their investigation will take its course - ours will take its course, but our main focus is round one.

It was nice knowing you, Washington," Metropolitan Police were dispatched to the sinkhole site, and local residents said the problem might be due to a new sewer that had just been installed. "If that is the case, it would be typical of this kind of sinkhole collapse," said Jim Kaufmann, a research physical scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey. Sinkholes are not uncommon, Kaufman said,

"That's probably a little bit hard to believe, but the playing group have come together and focused on what we can control and that is our football." Stanton said it was humbling that the Bombers were still having members sign up in large numbers despite the saga and that there was a strong turnout at the family day. "We can't thank them enough for that," he said. I think they're looking forward to the season starting next week as well and we can put this behind us and focus on our football again."

"It is still too early to determine when Ben may return to the playing field but he will now commit to a dedicated training regime along with a structured outpatient program. "I have advised the NRL of Ben's progress and our ongoing plans and they are comfortable with our position and the strategies we have in place." Coach Des Hasler said he hoped to have Barba back in his side shortly. "He will return to training over the weekend and pending the views and analysis of the Bulldogs coaching and medical staff along with the advice of the independent specialists, he may be available for selection in the coming weeks," Hasler said.

'Delighted' Thurston re-signs for Cowboys

He says Townsville and North we've got, the boys we've Queensland Origin star Queensland is a great place to stay, got. I've got lots of friends and Johnathan Thurston has regiven he is looking to start a family of best mates here. signed for the North "I'm relieved, the last Queensland Cowboys on a his own. "I'm definitely delighted and couple of weeks have been pretty multi-million dollar, tough to come to the four-year deal. decision and I've made it. "I had that little bit of doubt but I've had a few days to think about it now and this is my decision." Thurston is the third major re-signing for the Cowboys after they recently secured Origin props James Tamou and Matt Scott. Cowboys general manager Peter Parr lauded Thurston's decision to sign on for less than what the Sydney clubs were offering. "We're particularly happy on the back of some of our signings, everybody at the club is really happy our players are recommitting," Parr said. "I know he's recommitted to our club for less money than what he could earn elsewhere. The club's very humbled that he took that course of action. "It speaks volumes not only for our club, but for the region of North Queensland that he's decided to remain here."

Slater takes out the Quiksilver Pro

Eleven times world champion Kelly Slater has won the Quiksilver Pro defeating reigning world title holder Joel Parkinson in classic conditions at Kirra beach on the Gold Coast.
Both surfers exchanged high-scoring barrels including three in the first three minutes of the final. Parkinson took an early lead before Slater unleashed a near-perfect 9.83 out of 10 ride to win the 40-minute heat 18.56 to 17.47. It was the 52nd career title for 41-year-old Slater. Contest director Jake Paterson took the bold decision to move the event to Kirra this morning and it was only the second time the Quiksilver Pro final had been surfed at Kirra. Slater had to overcome former world number three Mick Fanning on his home break in the semi-final before moving on to take on another Kirra local in world number one Parkinson. Fanning posted a heat score of 18.60 out of 20, enough to win most heats but Slater produced a deep barrel that scored a perfect 10 to top Fanning with a heat score of 19.37. Parkinson also scored a perfect 10 in the first wave of his semi-final against Michel Bourez of Tahiti, wining that heat 18.17 to 15.80. Slater collected $US75,000 ($72, 686) for first prize and 10,000 ratings points towards a 12th world title in 2013. After not contesting all events of the world championship tour in recent years Slater has vowed to compete in all 10 this time around. "'I've committed to doing the full tour this year, so I'll be putting my best effort in," Slater said following his victory in today's opening event of the year. The world's most successful surfer of all time said it was fun to be back at Kirra, a wave he first surfed as a 15-year-old. "I really wanted to surf Kirra, as I made it known the other day and it was great fun out there," Slater said. He had spent two hours late yesterday afternoon on the hill above the classic barrel break studying conditions in anticipation of the contest moving there today. "I try to pay attention to a lot of things," Slater said when asked how he can keep winning so many tight contests. I notice things and adjust accordingly."

Thurston's previous contract was set to expire at the end of the 2013 NRL season and the Kangaroos star had received lucrative offers from other clubs, including Penrith and Canterbury. But Thurston has accepted a four-year deal with the Cowboys, reportedly for much less than the $5 million reported over the weekend. Thurston cited his love for the club and the region as the reason behind the deal. "My last contract was a tough decision but it had nothing on this," Thurston said at a Cowboys press conference. "I personally want to thank the Sydney clubs that were interested and the individuals over there. "The money wasn't the be all and end all for me. There was a fair bit knocked back but to remain in Townsville and finish my career here is something I wanted to do."

relieved to get it out of the way, especially so early in the season," Thurston said. "I can't put it down to one (reason) but there's many - starting a family, the lifestyle, the club, coming to training with the roster
