The valve modifier xFz for the onset of cavitation, referred to by VDMA 24422 as the z value, is a measured value at which cavitation noise first becomes perceptible. The xFz value thus corresponds to the pressure ratio

at the onset of cavitation. xFz values are not only type-specific (valve/butterfly valve etc.), they also exhibit considerable differences within each type depending on the design characteristics. Depressurization volumes and stem-guided parabolic throttling elements, for example, influence the xFz values positively, causing them to increase sharply in the partial load range. The xFz value is proportional for a maximum permissible pressure ratio (xF) in cavitation-free operation. Twice the xFz value, for instance, means cavitation-free operation with twice the pressure difference. xFz is consequently not only important for noise calculations, but also for estimating the valve's service life and susceptibility to repair. Since the xFz value depends to a very large extent on the valve type, measured xFz values should be used for more precise calculations.
