Respect Life
"The angel's Annunciation to Mary is framed by these reassuring words: "Do not be afraid, Mary" and "with God nothing will be impossible" (Lk 1:30, 37). The whole of the Virgin Mother's life is in fact pervaded by the certainty that God is near to her and that he accompanies her with his providential care." (Evangelium Vitae, 105). What happened at the Annunciation overcomes the fear and despair that lead to violence. It has been said that the false god transforms suffering into violence, while the true God transforms violence into suffering. Mary, in her "yes," gives courage to all mothers who know that being a mother will involve some suffering. She assures them that they are not alone. The Christian community, following Mary's example, accompany these mothers with their prayers and their active charity, providing alternatives to abortion.

From the Pastors Desk

Last week I met with the Renovation Committee and the Finance Council and they approved the report on our renovation appeal we started in February of last year and on renovation of the shrine area and new reconciliation rooms. Renovation Appeal Income from February 2012-February 2013 $ 115,557.57 Renovation of the Shrine and New Reconciliation Rooms Expenses Electric Work in Shrine and Reconciliation Rooms $ 2,180.10 Removal of Bars and Opening of Wall for Doors $ 3,000.00 Six New Doors, Installation, and Carpentry Work $ 5,893.43 Renovation of Shrine and Reconciliation Rooms (drywall, patch, and paint) $ 11,819.12 New Columns and Installation and Ceiling Repairs $ 7,922.64 Renovation of Five Kneelers $ 1,200.00 New Carpet and Installation $ 1,500.00 New Skylight and Installation $ 2,250.00 Total Expenses $ 35,765.29 Total Remaining $ 79,792.28 I also had a meeting with the Archdiocese and insurance representatives regarding the church roof and the recent leaks. These are the most important parts of their report: - The roof system on the structure appears not to be performing with reported active leaks into the structure. - Based on the reported age of the roof system (installed in 1988) the roof system is beyond its design life. Some of the reported leaks may be a result of aging of the membrane. - Recent repairs were noted in the reported leak area and it is unclear as to the result of those repairs. - No hail related defect were noted to the roofing system in any of the test areas. - The aluminum coating on the structure is peeling and delaminating throughout the entire roof areas. - The perimeter edge detailing is open and allowing water to enter the structure. - In conclusion, there is no weather-related impairment noted to the roofing systems. It appears the PVC roof system is at the end of its useful service life and may be allowing water to enter. This week the archdiocese is going to assign to us one of their agents to assist us in the process of planning the solution to our church roof problems. When we have a plan, then we will start getting estimates on the cost of the new roof and we will work together on this important project for our parish community.
