Marielle Tomo Romeo and Juliet February 9, 2013 Bohol Cultural Center 2:00 PM 5:00 PM Ballet Performing Dance Troop

ROMEO AND JULIET (COMMENTS): 1. Characters The one who played as Romeo is too old for the one who played as Juliet. I think its better if the two performers playing as Romeo and as Juliet have the same age. So that there will be a great connection and chemistry between them. 2. Story Line Act 1: Scene 1: The Marketplace An age old feud divides two families in Verona, the Montague and the Capulet. At day break, a quarrel breaks out between Tybalt, a nephew of Capulet, and Romeo, son of the lord Montague and his friend Mercutio. A fight ensues. The Prince of Verona appears and commands the families to end their feud. Comments: The scene was not properly emphasized because of the unsynchronized dance moves and steps of the dancers. The stage is too crowded, lots of dancers are not really necessary to be there on stage because audiences are confused where to focus. Scene 2: Juliet and the Nurse Juliet is playing with her nurse. Lord and Lady Capulet arrive to present their daughter to Paris, a rich young nobleman who wishes to marry her. Comments: The girl who played as Juliet dances gracefully and acts as Juliet as what everybody expect. The scene was clearly emphasized by the performers. Scene 3: The Ballroom Guest had arrived for a ball at the palace of the Lord and Lady Capulet. Romeo and his friends decide to enter in pursuit of the Pretty Rosaline. They put on mask to avoid recognition. The scene opens with the Lords and Ladies dancing. During the ball, Romeo and Juliet see each other and fall in love. Tybalt recognizes Romeo and orders him to leave, but Lord Capulet tries to intervene and bring peace. However, Tybalts anger cannot be overcome, and the Lord Capulet reluctantly asked Romeo to leave. Comments: They dressed, danced and act like there was really a ball. Scene 4: Juliets Balcony

Unable to sleep, Juliet comes out on her balcony thinking of Romeo. Suddenly, Romeo appears in the garden. They confess their love. Comments: They act well, as what the audience expected. But I think its better if they said something like the lines like in the book of Romeo and Juliet so that audience will really feel the emotion. Scene 5: The Chapel Romeo and Juliet at Friar Lawrences chapel and are secretly married Friar Lawrence hopes that their union may end the strife between the Montagues and the Capulets. Comments: Great acting by the performers, especially the one who played as Juliet, her facial expression really added her attractiveness on stage. Act 2: Scene 1: The Marketplace Tybalt challenges Mercutio to fight and kills him. Romeo avenges the death of his friend and his exiled from Verona. Comments: Crowded stage, lots of dancers are not necessary to be there. It just ruined the scene and they fail to emphasize to the audience what really is happening. Just at the end of the scene there we realized that it is the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio. Scene 2: The Capulets House The exiled Romeo leaves Juliet. Her parents enter with Paris. Juliet refuses to marry Paris. Her parents threaten to disown her. Juliet in desperation runs to see Friar Lawrence. Juliet implores to Friar for help. He gives her a phial of sleeping potion which will make her fall into a death-like sleep. Believing her to be dead, her parents will place her body in a family tomb. Meanwhile, Romeo warned by Friar Lawrence will return at night to take her away. In the evening, Juliet tells her parents she will marry Paris. Next Morning they arrive and find her in all appearances dead. Comments: The one who acted as Juliet never fails the audience to feel her emotion. She dances gracefully as what the story is. But some performers lacked on their facial expression. Scene 3: The Capulets Family Crypt Tragically the Friars message did not reach Romeo but instead he has learned news of Juliets death. Disguised as a monk, he returns to Verona and enters the crypt. Finding Paris there and kill him. Believing Juliet to be dead, Romeo takes poison and dies. Juliet wakes seeing Romeo dead and she stabs herself. Comments: The dancers acting as Romeo, as Juliet and as Paris, really emphasize the scene with all the emotions necessary for the scene.

3. Performing Arts a. Music Some of the background music is not really appropriate for the scene. But overall the chosen music/songs are great for the ballet steps and moves. b. Dance Mostly the dancers on the scene of the Marketplace have unsynchronized dance moves/ steps and they fail to emphasize the scene. I think the stage is too small for a big group of dancers. c. Theater Some performers failed to act well. Some lack of facial expressions and they fail to give the audience satisfaction. 4. Props, Costumes and Light effects Overall the props, costumes and light effects added the beauty of the play. I think they give much time on thinking about the props and costumes because they never fail to show the Victorian dresses worn by the ladies in old ages. The choice of color really attracted the audiences. 5. Choreography The dances where choreographed well but other dancers fail to exert effort to dance. Some performances are unsynchronized. 6. Lesson Learned Romeo and Juliet can teach us many valuable life lessons. The lessons in Romeo and Juliet are mainly that you should not make rash decisions that you should think through most decisions and that young love does not justify suicide. Suicide should not be an option for dealing with the problems of young love. Romeo and Juliets love is really infatuation. True love takes time to build. Romeo and Juliet only knew each other for five days, which is not enough time for anyone to fall in love. Its a nice plot for a play, but not for real life. After Romeo kills himself with poison, Juliet kills herself with a dagger: "This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die." This is not the best answer to her problems. My argument is that life lessons can be learned through reading, but the life lessons learned must be applied to a persons life to get anything out of the lessons learned. 7. Overall Comment The play was nice, but I think they should practice more and more. It is also nice that the little performers or the ballet dancers experienced something like to that, so that in the next play they will do, they will apply the lessons and things to be improved. 8. Recommendations Characters will have dialogues so that audience will understand what they are trying to portray and they will also choose a big venue or stage so that a scene will not be as crowded as we saw this year. I hope next year they will do another play with improvements.
