In addition to witness confusion, in the larger world we also have political bias, where an adversary relationship, and what communicators seek to accomplish, can further impose a spin on how alleged truths are presented. I first try to both wrap my head around whats happening, why we sometimes seem to be in trouble, then consider how we can do a better job. I want to both present an academically or journalistically fair representation of the various view points, and share my personal view point, when analyzing what the heck is going on, and what can be done about problem areas. The Author of this research, Alister Wm Macintyre, welcomes other people to download copies of Als work, but warns that different cited sources have different attribution and copyright restrictions, so care should be followed downstream, in selecting where to re-use the material.
Users of my research hold Alister Wm. Macintyre harmless, and also the places I upload my research to, and agree that my copyright is reserved and that the information is available for the intended purpose of helping my social network friends share an understanding on how humans ought to do a better job of learning about our world, so that we can take constructive action to improve it. I am doing this using individual documents focusing on different topics, where international news media (which often reflects national origin, and political bi as) can paint very different stories about what the heck is going on, to try to avoid any one document being excessively large. Some of my research content is direct quotes from other sources. I try to give credit every time I do this, and structure the quotes, so it is pretty obvious that they are quotes.

Iran allegedly captured a small, low-altitude Raven RQ-11 type drone, summer of 2011, then another of the same kind, Nov 2012. I learned about these two, Jan 2013. Handlaunched, RQ-11 drones are manufactured by AeroVironment, they have about a six mile range and a 90 minute endurance, cruising at 56 kilometres per hour. Ravens can operate using a ground operator, or be fully autonomous. Iran hacked down an almost totally intact stealth RQ-170 Sentinel, by telling it that its home airbase (in Afghanistan) was this airbase in Iran, then telling it to return to base. This happened late 2011 November.5 After a lot of denials, the US eventually admitted that the US CIA had been flying drones over Iran, and had lost one there. The stories, how it came to crash land at the Iran airbase, never converged between Iran and USA versions. There was a lot of coverage of this into Spring 2012. Sept 2012, Iran has a radar-evading drone.6 The USA has allegedly been using drones to spy on Iranian nuclear program,7 and that is how they found out Iran was moving fuel rods from the Bushehr reactor to a cooling pond during the week beginning 2012 Oct 22. The IAEA confirmed this report 2012 Nov-7. Iran and USA disagree over what is international waters and airspace, and what is Coastal waters and airspace. Many nations have such disputes. 2012 Nov-1, a US predator drone was flying in what US said was international airspace, and Iran said was Iran airspace.

Iran air force tried to shoot down the drone, via two Russian-made Su-25 jets known as Frogfoots, failed.8 Lots of accusations back and forth what constitutes an act of war. 2012 Nov-19, Iran complained to the UN about the intensity of US drones flying over Iran airspace. December 2012: Iran claims to capture a US drone.9 It is not clear from their info when the latest incident occurred. However, here is a video of the capture.10 The craft is in excellent condition, so it is evident to me, that it was a hack down, not a shoot down, as some news media has speculated, unless Iran has developed a new tactic, like a grab. 11 Here is video from inside RQ-170 Sentinel, indicating that Iran, Russia, and China, and possibly other nations, know as much about it as the USA does.12 Iran has a Scan Eagle in hand regardless of US claims that they have all of their units accounted for.13 Iran announcements speculating where it may have originated, which US or NATO military unit launched the thing, or how Iran got their hands on it. 14 Many nations in the region, not currently part of US military efforts, also have this technology. This news came out 2012 Dec-4. Azerbaijan allegedly has Israeli drones, with USA weapons conducting spying missions over Iran's shared border with Karabakh, and of course Iran is upset about this. Israel and Azerbaijan denied the allegations.15 I first saw this story 2012 Dec-20.

Iran's Energy and Communications Sectors While Having Had U.S. Government Contracts, GAO-13-344R, February 25 http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-13-344R Mar 12, 2013: The US had a Predator drone over the Persian Gulf. An Iranian manned fighter plane approached it. An American manned fighter plane arrived and verbally asked the Iranian to leave, which it did. No shots were fired.17 In middle of 2013 March: Iranian manned military aircraft targeted a U.S. Predator drone over the Persian Gulf. Both Iran and USA have confirmed the incident. The US says it was international waters airspace off Oman. No shots were fired.18 Iran is testing border patrol drones.19
The USA has CBP drones patrolling US border regions. They are supposedly not weaponized, but have lots of tools to identify the people they see, within 100 miles of US borders, which include 2/3 of US population. There were several incidents 2013 March, where Iran says NATO tried to send a U2 over Iran, but was chased off by Iran military. 20 The US disagrees, saying that was an unmanned aircraft. Future Prediction Iran and USA will have a 1 day war, then claim it was all by accident.21

There was a story in the news in October 2012 about a drone over Israel, where Israel thought it was from Iran, tried to hack it down, failed, so then they shot it down. The Oct 6 drone incursion was subsequently traced to Hezbollah.22
Iran claims to have pictures of Israeli military bases, taken by the crashed drone.23 Both Iran and Hezbollah claim to have sent other drones over Israel, which Israel did not notice, did not react to. Now that Israel has the crashed evidence, they find that some of the on-board equipment was made in Germany.24
Lawfare points at some of the early reports, Oct 8, 2012 QUOTE25

Heres John Villasenor over at Slate on the news implications,26 Bloomberg27 with Israels remarks, the AP on Israels flyover over Lebanon in response28, the New York Times story on Israels flyover29, and Guy Azriel of CNN with video of the drone being shot down:30 Speaking of drones, theres a protest underway led by Pakistani politician Imram Khan along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border31. The Slate article raises important questions about the ability of Israel, or any nation for that matter, ability to detect hostile drones, and intercept them, before they do any harm.35 According to Lawfare, Oct 12, 2012 QUOTE36
There was a drone strike yesterday that killed 18 insurgents yesterday along the Afghan-Pakistan border.37 Hezbollah officials acknowledged that the drone that Israel shot down last weekend was theirs. Heres the Journal, 38 the Jerusalem Post39 and the Times40 on the subject.
UNQUOTE The Jerusalem Post said the drone was shot down with a Patriot surface to air missile.41 Slate said the drone was shot down by an Israeli fighter jet air to air missile.42 The Wall Street Journal wrote Oct 11, 2012 QUOTE43
Hezbollah leader Seyed Hassan Nasrallah characterized the reconnaissance operation, which he said used an Iranian drone assembled in Lebanon, as a major success for the Shiite group. UNQUOTE

My drone documents are named with a version #, which I increment as I replace with re-writes. In parentheses after each chapter heading is date in format (Year Month Day) when I last updated the contents of that chapter. People with an earlier edition can see what has been updated since they last got a copy. Some chapter headings end in an exclamation point. These indicate either identification of a controversy, and-or links to what the facts may be. Some chapter headings have a number # sign at the end. These indicate chapters with specifics on counts of people killed. Other symbols may be added later. This helps correlation of conflicting info sources, in my further research. Formerly, all my notes on Drones were in one document, which was growing excessively large. I have now split them into the following:
Drone Dates = Time Line Calendar of Dates of What Happened in Drone usage
History, and When we found out, thanks to publication of Key documents. 44 This info was originally in Drone Notes, then split off to its own document, where it grew lots more. Then Drone Iran split off from Drone Dates and Drone Nations.
Drone Iran = Listing of incidents between Iran and other nations where drones
involved. There are other areas of conflict, belonging in other research docs, which I am currently not having the time to follow closely. This info originally split off from Drone Dates and Drone Nations, which had split off from Drone Notes.
Drone Nations = A list of nations where drones are operating, being manufactured,
purchased, hacked, crashing, being used by military, not necessarily of same nation.
44
Drone Reports is a directory of major sources of info, which I have located so far, downloaded some.
10
3/19/2013 1:51:25 AM
With each nation listed, I have footnotes with links to examples of how drones are being used in that nation, the sophistication of the drones, and more info. This info was originally part of Drone Notes, then split off, grew in leaps and bounds. In time, it may get split to focus on military vs. civilian applications, manufacturing & export. Then Drone Iran split off from Drone Dates and Drone Nations. We see many articles claiming drones are in 40 or 50 nations. The last relevant GAO report, which I saw on this, says that 50 nations are manufacturing drones, with over 900 different models total, and many of them exporting to other nations in the world. The truth is maybe twice as many nations. Drone Nations is a directory of nations and non-nations with drones, with multiple links cited on what drones are being used for there, and my effort to correlate mismatches between different sources. See that document for details on the count which is constantly growing.
Drone Notes = my original main overall document, which later may be split again.
Here you can find: o Links to where I get this info, including official sources; 45 o Hundreds of USA locations, where drones are in use; o Legal complications; Political Complications; o Statistics on numbers of innocent bystanders killed, and numbers of enemy targets; o Technology advances, changing nature of Drone Capabilities; o Other topics.
Originally there was just the one document = Drone Notes, then over time I split off the others, either from Drone Notes, or later split some of the others, and occasionally launched a brand new doc.
Drone Reports = This is a directory of official downloads I have located, where, some
info about them, read so far, where my notes ended up, from that digesting. This started as a piece of Drone Notes, then got split off.
Drone Robots = These research notes explore development of killer drones which can
operate without human in the loop, and what are the implications of that. When this topic came to my attention, I already had multiple split offs from Drone Notes, so I decided to launch this as a separate focus area.
Drone Scribd = I created a Drone Info collection on Scribd, listing many educational,
interesting, and stimulating Scribd articles and documents on Drones. 46 Then I started
45 46
Now just footnote citations, since directory of sources has moved to Drone Reports. http://www.scribd.com/collections/3807680/Drone-Info at http://www.scribd.com/AlMac99

reviewing them. Where I had previously seen some of the info, I extracted prior notes from Drone Notes and Drone Terms to include here. Where I found, what seemed to me to be errors of fact, distortions, or incomplete pictures, I cite sources to complete the story, to help authors, of the other efforts, address gaps in their presentations. So in addition to my summary observations on many Scribd info sources about Drones, I also try to provide a road map to other sources I have found, relevant to the picture(s) painted by these Scribd reports.
Drone Terms = Glossary of Terminology, Acronyms, Concepts etc. which have come
up in my drone research. I have also encountered some parallel tales of alleged official misconduct, which have led to some non-drone content. By end of 2012, it had grown to over 1,000 acronyms, terms, and concepts defined, relevant to Drone research, and related National Security topics, so far. This info was one of the first to get split from Drone Notes. For more details, see Al Mac Shared Research section, at end of Drone Notes document, and what is in Drone Log.
